A contract position. Being a banker even as a full time staff isn't funny. As a full staff the money to easily pay bills is there, but you are constantly very busy, very stressed with high job uncertainty. - it's not an interesting life at all.
If one will choose banking one must think of these and be confortable choosing of all that.

@OP: There is nothing for you in the oil sector right now. the most viable self employing skills now are in IT- programming, graphics design, animation, social media content manager, data analytics. Then also photography, shoe making, fashion design, interior decoration, furniture making, poultry, fish production.
Programming is really good if you can handle the thinking involved and also the time commitment it demands.
But most important factor is viability where you are and your interest. Whatever it is you must be ready to learn well and produce quality work.

people like you are the reason I still frequent this website... you reason well ..not like the remaining 85% ..all they know is pinshure or idontbilivit

My simple opinion is that if you can learn and relearn on Forex trading or cryptocurrency for good 4months
Then start trading with little amount .
You'll thank me later.
Note: I'm doing it but I'm not gaining much due to lack of funds.

I think you should run a business that can sustain you for now while learning copy writing, and apply it wherever it will be lucrative for you. The way you titled your story made me want to know more, if you cultivate the potential, I believe you would do well, programming pays but requires a high mental dedication and you don't have much time right now.
you can even apply it in construction management to make things easy to for you. since you have a background on it

My brothers and sisters, I still need your inputs. Mention of any trending skill will be appreciated

Consider Cybersecurity and other relatively new IT specialties that are currently trending towards the future. Those in the IT field will give better advice hopefully.

Your lost years (based on your consideration) will not matter much anymore in due season once you remain focused for the future.

Does this apply to full staff hired at Executive trainee level?

@Op, I can say banking job is not a total waste of time .
It was a waste of time to you becox it was not your career path. Like a graduate of accounting, banking & finance etc can never be a waste of time & resources to them.
It's good you realize it on time, I pray to God for total career recovery for you.
No knowledge is wasted .
Bros @40, time nor dey again
If you have enough capital, just go into business or trade., At this time you wouldn't want to settle for a graduate trainee job in your own carrier job.
Uncle you are talking shii.....even at 60 you can start all over!!!

I always found the term 'banker' quite broad and I only really hear it being used that way Nigeria. Is a 'banker' essentially a customer service/sales assistant that happens to work in a bank? Because I believe there are a variety of role types in the banking industry
Banker is anybody that works in the bank and interacts with customers information/money aside cleaners and security men.

By far, problem with those daily money guys is that dey burn up cash as fast as they make it but there are few who learn to save and cross into the almost non existent middle class. The biggest problem Nigerians have is we like living above our means.

Feel sorry for you bro,

I worked as a teller/ cashier too for like a year before I ran away albeit not a Nigerian bank tho.

Anyway pls help me bro, which banking software are you familiar with or do you know any micro finance sql softwares that you probably used for 10 years which enabled you to help customers withdraw and deposit thier money.

Also during the 10 years was your till ever over or under ( cashier language ) grin

Anyway pls I’m asking for this banking softwares because I plan of launching an electronic online bank and the softwares my old bank used to keep customers information is not available in Nigeria

With regards to your progress in life, it’s crazy how you were just busy counting money for 10 years at the till with no prospect of moving upfwards. Even if there was no vacancy at least there could have been a loans department within your bank, direct debit or standing order department where you should have been promoted to to learn one or two

It’s strange your operational manager saw you on the till for 10 years and left you there this life no balance then tbh

Hi all, moderator pls help me push to fp. I need good advise like badly.

I joined the banking system about a decade ago. Young and naive. I got carried away by thier flashy suits and top tech phones.
The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one.

This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications.

Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway,
I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad.

I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc.

Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field.

I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area.

Niaralanders, pls help a brother

Mistake No1 u don’t join any industry without a primary objective and focus. How can u be counting money for 10years as a teller and call that progress? During this period how many times where u promoted if at all? Did u save enough money during this time? What new knowledge or skills did u add to urself?

Don’t work so long in any place that doesn’t bring the expected value to u per time spent. That is setting urself backwards.

I have worked with 2 banks and in both cases I knew exactly when to leave once I studied how the system works. I know exactly what I want and if I’m not getting it at the appropriate time I walk very easily or I create other options for myself.

My time in the bank was not wasted cos I learnt alot about the financial system/world and once I wasn’t learning anything new again I walked unless if the pay was attractive enough.

Banks are configured to use u and take up all ur time. It’s almost an intentional strategy to keep u busy with theirs and not urs. It’s up to u to learn the required skills in any of the departments and plan ur exit if Ure not getting what u want... it’s a very simple and clear matter.

On moving forward learn lucrative skills or skills that are ur strengths. Organize urself and plans, be disciplined and u will go far.

Congratulations on being courageous to release yourself from the golden handcuff.

You can take courses on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Affiliate marketing.

You can learn copywriting in order to write your own sales pages but don't invest in making a career from copywriting. I'd suggest you delve into the emerging tech fields in order to be strategically positioned in this 4th technological revolution.

All this that you mention bro. What qualification deoe someone need for this?
