I have always made sense.

I just want u to drop Ur "it is their fault mentality" and move on and take Ur destiny in Ur hands bro.

You could av resigned and moved on.

I am not talking it, I once had 2 offer letters from 2 different banks at the same time cos of the skill I am very proficient in.

There are people who rose from 180k entry level to collect 1million naira net in banking within 10 years ask around or check people's transactions on pay day
My dear, 180k to 1milli in 10yrs doesn't happen again since post credit crunch of 2009. Besides I never spoke about money. I spoke about career growth, self development, cognate value addition.

It still happens.

Just take that from me.

The strategy is that u dnt stay in one bank and before that can happen u need to acquire required skills and keep developing urself .

Your career growth, self development , cognate value addition are all dependent on you.

Invest your time in IT my man...Be a guru in whatever specialty you choose. Below are a few examples of good paying IT certificates. If you are good at what you do, you don't have to leave Nigeria to work in the field, trust me. Personally, I would go for AWS....

Google Certified Professional Cloud Architect (GCP)
AWS Certified Solutions Architect—Associate.
Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)
Project Management Professional (PMP)
Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

Thank you very much for your piece. I so much appreciate it. I have a business already. Infact I have two ongoing but I feel I need to have a high paying skill one which I can make a name with or get paid in dollars for, or one which I can consult for multinationals etc. I lost out on trends really, I will really appreciate if anyone can point me in that direction. Many thanks

All this that you mention bro. What qualification deoe someone need for this?
I need an answer brother.

Visit nairaland programming section and search for Data science. You'll see a post by Ejiod on how he made a transition. You'll gain insights from there.

You can take free courses from edx.org or coursera.org

All-in-all, it will require a great deal of determination and mental fortitude but it's worth it in the end.

I've kept on saying that I am comfortable but career dead. How do u guys skip that part? After working for 10yrs,you will realize that money is not everything. Earning 200k as a bachelor without time for other things seem like a big deal. Earn the same 200k for another 10yrs being married with kids, yet with no time of your own or freedom to pursue your ambitions or career growth then comeback here and say what u said again.

What has Industrous lady got to do with my seemingly dead career? I have 2 businesses myself, does that mean I am not Industrous? Pls stick to career advise and not money because after leaving the bank I am comfortable.

The best advise you will get is this:
Find a problem that is facing Nigerians daily, look for a solution.
You will see yourself embarking on a journey that will build you and reward you financially.
Never go into any field based on mere recommendation, do the research yourself. It will save you heartache in the future.

Dunning-Kruger Effect states that, “the knowledge and intelligence that are required to be good
at a task are often the same qualities needed to recognize that one is not good at that task.
meaning - the less you know about a field, the more you overestimate your own ability in relation to that field.
the more you know about a field, the more you underestimate your own ability in relation to that field

Now you are at a cross road, the Dunning-kruger effect will definitely come into play here, you will get a lot of suggestions
and will definitely overestimate your ability to succeed in those field.
Instead of looking for trending skills, look for problems around you and go into overdrive on how to solve those problems
and you will be amazed that people will be willing to pay you for the solution.
Elon Musk is a classic example, he had identified problems in the US (NASA high cost of payload, ineffective electric cars,
etc) and he went on overdrive and came up with solutions to NASA issue, electric cars etc and soon is on his way to becoming the richest man soon.

I left Nigeria few years ago and when I arrived in my new environment, I noticed a problem here and it had to do with the payment system
I started searching for ways to solve the issue and finally found it.
When I launched the solution I was amazed at the number of people begging to take their money to use my service.
It changed my life.

Amazing post but poverty is the greatest problem in Nigeria. Fix poverty and many of Nigeria's problems will disappear and poverty keeps on increasing in the zoo. It's now the world's poverty capital and getting worse.

Thanks for this detailed explanation. It was until this year that I discovered that most Software Engineers in Banks are employed by big tech vendors who have signed agreements with the bank, so the employees are directly under those vendors on contract. Quite weird, that alone is a red flag for me.

I also found out recently from a GTB staff that you get promoted every 4 years as GTB staff. Maybe she was lying, maybe not.

All in all, 360k-380k is a good income if growth is allowed, but promotion twice in 10 years feels like Israelites in the land of Egypt.

For market facing staff (marketers), you can even earn promotion every year (very rare these days) but it’s guaranteed 2-3years upon excellent performance. Please note that some spend years on same grade and that’s because they performed below expectations. To avoid remaining on same grade for too long, Banks then introduced “notch”, this way, a staff can move along the notch line (steps) but still on same grade but salary keeps increasing minimally until normal promotion comes.
One can get an outright promotion without necessarily moving along the notch line but it’s based on excellent performance. It’s also easier for marketers to move from one bank to the other and such movement comes with next level which is the same as promotion but in a different bank but be rest assured of pressure to deliver on set target.

Growth is easier for marketers while the back office staff (operations, internal control/compliance, IT staff etc) can remain on same grades for years. I know of a bank where the operations manager spent 13 years on same grade. She was not alone. So many others experienced that.

Some people here are urging him on. I am not discouraging anybody but for somebody at that age and being a family man it is better he find another job or start a business then he can then study programming a side hustle.

But programming as the main hustle no dey easy o. I am talking from experience.
