Cancel culture is something of controversy on social media. There are people who say it is bad and others who firmly stand by the power behind cancelling people or organisations. For context, cancel culture simply means to not engage with a person/organisation because of their thoughts on certain topics or their actions. For example, after many watched the “surviving R.Kelly” documentary, the singer was cancelled. Personally, I blocked him on my Spotify. It can be a matter of personal ethics and not standing for anything that goes against what you believe in. Of course, there are people who just do it because everyone on Twitter is doing it. I’m not really speaking of this second set of people.
The experience also made me see how because it was a friend’s brother, we were quick to be more merciful about cancelling him, we wanted to talk and educate him. So, why don’t we do this for the strangers we cancel daily on social media? Why don’t we give people a chance to change? Should we also be merciful to the toxic people we encounter on social media? Give time for conversations/education before cancelling them? And how effective is cancel culture anyway?

Do they know you 'cancelled' them?

What loss are they likely to suffer from the said 'cancelling'?

if you aint down with a person's beliefs is ONE THING, but if they try to force it upon you or if they commit a crime that you are fully against, then canceling them is a COMPLETE DIFFERENT ISSUE.

the only person i can never cancel are my family.... whether they do go or bad, as much as i may not believe in what they do/did, they will always remain my family, and as much as we may not see each other every other day etc, we will always meet at family diners etc thus i would need to stay amiable.

if my child commits a heinous crime, as much as i may not stand for what he/she did, i will let them face the consequences of their actions AND still stand by them as my loving children.

MJ/R Kelly may have been pedos but their music is great nevertheless....

Lol, cancel culture. cheesy
Everything is a "thing" these days.

I have not had a reason to cancel any family member yet, although I do maintain some distance from a few just for my sanity sake.

As for R Kelly, I still have his music, I will always listen to his music and will continue to use his most sensual tracks to activate hot steamy sessions inside my private ashawo quarters.

Cancel culture people, na una sabi.

This is a very interesting topic. I still have not made up my mind about it. I still listen to R. Kelly and Michael Jackson's songs and in the back of my mind I am asking myself, is this right? I strongly believe in second chances but pedophilia is not a mistake, it is a disorder and a crime and in Kelly and Jackson's case a lifestyle. So should we support them by paying for their music? Well, Michael is dead so it makes no difference really, does it? What about Robert Kelly? Do we enable him by listening to his music, by paying for each and every track or album?

As for second chances, how can you give someone a second chance who is not remorseful? And even if Kelly was remorseful? Can he change? Is it for us to condemn and forgive or for the courts? Is it a purely legal question or a moral one as well? You asked a very good question in the end of your original post, is 'cancelling' effective at all?

The answer is yes, it is. It is very effective.

Why do you think companies distance themselves from controversial figures they formerly paid to advertise their products? Because if a big group of people boycotts their products for not distancing themselves on moral grounds, their turnover shrinks, the stakeholders become nervous .... You get the point!

I also remember Nike having a campaign with Collin Kaepernick when his kneeling during the national anthem before a game ignited heated debates all over the US. I read Nike's sales figures skyrocketed.

The decisions we make, make a difference at the end.

Now Michael Jackson and R. Kelly are extreme examples because their alleged crimes (Jackson was pronounced innocent in court) involve children but what about lesser crimes? We would forgive our loved ones, let extend this generosity to strangers as well. Shall we? Instead we could support these public figures and brands who do right and leave criminals to face the law. Maybe ...

In Nigeria, cancelling means to kill.

Please dont introduce rubbish to us.

Blocking is just fine.
