Finally offload THC today for a very nice profit. I swung 500shares on July 10 when the price was $16.84 and sold today for 29.34. Patients is the best

Sounds very sweet.
But the hard work was in the waiting.
One full month of patience for a swing trade is not easy I can tell, with the various uncertainties from US/Chinese tension to the vagaries of the market.
In the end, we don't trade stocks, we trade patience!
More wins bro.

Yup! You’re right.

I’m gonna sell by $1700; at least realistically I see it reaching there tomorrow from people reacting to the market today.

Then will re-enter when short sellers take profits. I don’t see it reaching $2k without a dip.
Plus there’s still some days to the split for it to run up back and forth. Just my perception though

You can sell half and rebuy more after the stock split. It’ll be about $300 then I think

Managed loses are part of a good trading strategy.

Risk parameters should be around 1 for 2.

U exit at 1 if trade goes bad, exit at 2 if trade goes well.

Your trades become more predictable, key thing is knowing the true support and buying as closely as possible to that price.

Finally don't be greedy.

Exactly. It's not discouragement, it's reality. There are some days your losses will exceed your gains. There are some years that you will make nothing. This is even for investors who are supposed to have it better. Day traders experience more losses and their eyes dey see pepper. But when they strike gold, their harvests are bountiful.

The best thing to invest in is yourself. Find different hustles and multiple streams of income and then contribute into stocks with strong fundamentals. That is what the rich do. They're off playing golf somewhere and only look at their portfolio like twice a day. That was how they started because it is a habit you need to have early.

I have attached a screenshot showing the average returns of the S&P 500 over more than 1 decade. There are some years that your returns are negative. Few people have been able to outperform the s&p 500. The s&p 500 are 500 of the largest companies in the U.S.

I have voo , so I can see the returns is not on par with selecting stocks.

Here's an example of a trade i took. It happened within 20 minutes, which returned 13 %.

Now lets assume i lose 2 trades out of every 5 , I'm still going to stack up better returns especially if the bad trades are properly managed. Cutting losses quickly .

Then there's a compounding effect, that you get which you wouldn't have if you're just holding stocks for longer periods.

Not necessarily. I talk about my loses sometimes because it's part of investing. The truth is, we have been in a bull market for so many years that the gains outweigh the losses. Moreover, paper loss isn't a loss until you sell. So on days when the market is down, your portfolio will be down, but if you don't sell at that point, its not a loss and the market should rebound. I usually post some of my initial purchases here for transparency, its easier to track that way. Posting losses is also important so new investors don't think stock investing is an easy money making scheme with no risks. I've posted a few screenshot showing posts I made about my losses, there are even more posts than these

It’s a general problem my dear, not about the bank card you’re using.
Nigeria has put a restriction on most of the naira debit cards as directed by CBN.

Just keep trying, else you’d have to do bank transfer via Dom account (which is another stress).

Alright, thanks a lot. I was thinking d restriction only limits one's spending per month. I'ld keep trying anyways....though it's frustrating

As YerYer pointed out, in this up trending market, most people should be able to make money. There are a couple of problems - one specific to traders here and a more general issue.

Many here seem to trade the extremely volatile stocks promoted by the Naija fintech apps. I suspect those trading these stocks experience more frequent losses than would be the case if you're trading higher quality, but less volatile, stocks.

The second more general, and most important, problem is the long run return on stock investments by retail investors is poor relative to the broad index (e.g S&P 500) returns. This is why I have suggested indexes! In an up trending market, most of us are "gurus". But since we're all, I presume, relatively young and hope to successfully invest for decades, we need to invest (form good investment habits) in a way that will allow us thrive over 10/20/30 years. This is where I fear these overly rose-tinted posts about short-term wins can damage investors' ability to last the distance. People will increasingly be lured into putting their savings into this 5g or EV stock or the other high-tech name and find themselves trapped without warning. It may take months or years but it will eventually happen when we least expect it.

Spot on. Everyone is a genius in a bull market. From my little experience, I've been able to identify the big players and what I use to measure their performance is how much they lose when the market is down, relative to how much the s&p 500, dow, Nasdaq, etc are losing. For example, if the dow is down by 0.5% for this month and my portfolio is down by 20%, that means that I need to restructure my portfolio.

I want to get to the stage where I check my online brokerage account just 2 times a day. Trump could tweet something silly from his toilet seat at midnight and the covid stock you expected to make returns from has nosedived before the market opens. I value my peace of mind and although this wasn't how I started, I am beginning to anchor my portfolio with bond ETFs and mid cap value stocks.

From many indications, we may be experiencing a bubble at the moment and someone needs to be ready. I also need to divert my energy towards other little little projects that I have.
