The IAF rafales landed today

IIRC,you said they're to be used for low level ingress due to superior flight characteristics at this flight regime compared to the Su 30 which will fly high and 'light' the way for the French bird. Is that correct?

I didn't say flight characteristics perse . I meant the avionics .

The onboard avionics primarily decides whether the said aircraft with be able to take nap of the earth missions .

Flight characteristics do play a role but that is secondary , first is the avionics - the radars , and other related avionics like tactical air navigation (TACAN) system, terrain referenced navigation system (TERPROM), ground proximity warning system (GPWS), inertial navigation system integrated with satellite guidance etc which allows a aircraft to undertake very low level terrain hugging flight mission's.

Soviet engineering at its best, this could have been a game changer in naval warfare and logistics.

Yes Soviets were very good in science and technology , many don't know that Americans stole a lot of Soviet technology through espionage. In today's prices it would be 50+ billion dollar worth of technology. Image that.

But in the end Soviets didn't survive because they faltered on economy . War in Afghanistan only served to accelerate its detoriation faster.

A strong economy is the basis to sustainable progress in science and technology , stong military and over all strong country . Otherwise it's very difficult to continue.

If Soviet union had existed till today , the world might have been a much better place.

I am no communist , but balance is paramount in order to maintain sanity in world affairs.

Soviet union was doomed from the start when paranoid stalin came power with his implementation of the great purge.
This great purge was the beginning of Soviet's doom because it depleted competent intelligent populace that could have saved the nation.

Incompetent leaders like brezhnev which in his time was when the great stagnation started,

Khrushchev who almost started a nuclear war doing the Cuban missile crisis,

gorbachev's ill reform that ended the nation and also his handling of Chernobyl accident.

and even Yeltsin's bad flaws in Chechnya after post Soviet union.

All this people wouldn't have risen to power.
They all survived and rose to power not for their intellect or competency but because there were all loyal to stalinism.

America just had to play it's part as a formidable competitor in the fight for global power.

Am no big fan of capitalism but I think it was ok for Soviet union's dissolution,

Why?

Every one was worried about the nukes grin

Finally, the first cleansheet twin turbo attack plane since the OV 10 came out in the late 60s.

The TAV,Tactical Air Vehicle is the product of Icarus Aerospace,an outfit established only in 2016 in Quebec.

90% of the mission capability of modern fighter!
15% of the cost of modern combat jet!
100% Flexibility!
https://www.icarus-aerospace.com/tactical-air-vehicle-tav/

Armament:
+ Up to 11 external hard points
+ Up to 8000Lbs total load
+ One forward firing fixed cannon (customer’s choice)
+ One belly mounted optionally installed (up to 30mm) 360-degree turret cannon
+ Laser guided bombs and rockets
+ GPS guided munition
+ Up to two torpedoes

Ofc,this is all on paper. If it were me I'd have a pair of double barrelled 23mm on each wing capable of -5 degree depression and a centreline turret mounted double barrelled 30mm,180 degree capable slaved to a gymbal mounted electro optical sight. All in all a nice package, though I see nothing on price which should be 10-12 mn$. I can't think why this didn't come out sooner!

Edit: I'd have gone for a side by side cockpit. Easier cross communication under the stress of live fire.
Btw,nemesis8u, are your HAL guys too tied up do their own indig version? In a WORLD of COIN and LICs this is just what the doctor ordered!
Fyi max speed is almost 700 kph! Hard to hit in a low level pass with a BMG.

Compare with OV 10 with a centreline turret upon which I'd stick a 30mm recoil mitigation measures permitting . Is it just me or.....

..double barrelled 23mm Guns?? Noone wants to fly low and slow anymore since LGMs and LGBs are becoming the standard in CAS operations which allow the crew to engage their targets from a distance. Turrets on fix-wing aircraft like those tested on the Bronco never really became a thing in aviation, they tried it again in the 2000s on the V22. But weapon systems changed over time so tactics/doctrine changed. Maybe we dont even see any guns on the next generation of combat helicopters.

By the way, i like this aircraft.

I like the concept and with 8000lbs of payload capacity it is no slouch either .

IMO one autocannon is more than enough .With precision targetting high fire volume is not needed.

HAL is mainly tasked to follow local user requirements.

Anyways first time I am seeing that OV 10 with centerline gimballed gun pod , wonder if it ever entered production.

2 of the LCH prototypes was pressed to operational duties in the northern areas post recent conflict by IAF and ironically they have been delaying the induction of the same since last few years.
