Nice to have you back @nemesis8u
I doubt if these would last on the battle field, overloaded with a lot of sensors that can easily be damaged by RPG/rockets by there positioning.

I guess it is the number of crew that actually matters.

How do I explain it

When a system is designed - two factors predominates and dictates the design

1. Neutralization of threats
2. Survivability against threats

The protection of modern fighting vehicle is based on the philosophy called survivability onion ( pic below ) . Designers use it to incorporate technologies in order to address all possible adverse scenarios in a layered configuration.

Eg

For a RPG to hit carmel with high kill probability will need to overcome

1. Terrain , vegetation obstruction , Carmel will it's long range and elevated sensors will have a better chance of detecting the hostile before the hostile detects and gets into a position good enough to threaten it.

2. Organic active defence , APS onboard Carmel will deal with the incoming RPG rendering it ineffective at standoff distances.

3. Organic passive defence , if the RPG somehow manages to hit Carmel , then the armour will mitigate and contain the damage . There exists armour which can deflect / dissipate energy away ( outwards ) from the point of impact and thus possibly safeguarding the sensors in proximity.

4. Redundancy of sensors, sensors are positioned and distributed in a way which seeks to limit damage and to prevent total failure of all onboard sensors. If if one sensor or more gets damaged , the remaining sensors take over the functionality albeit ( maybe or maybe not ) with certain limitations. Designers makes sure fighting capabilities are retained to the max level possible.

Etc

This is just a simple example I gave off the bat . It is a complex subject actually.

Also understand that for engineers , scientists etc real life events which can occur wrt their solutions/products are basically nothing but a measure of probability ( they factor the most likely events ) and so it is not possible always to predict and take into account all possible range of exceptions which might happen in the future .

Eg a Iraqi farmer shooting down a Apache helicopter with a single bullet fired from his hunting rifle . I am sure no designer of Apache saw that coming grin

I hope you get my point

Every one of us or system operated by us is subject to some degree of unpredictable uncertainty, which the layman's term as good luck or shitty luck as the case maybe smiley

Only 2 crew operates the vehicle in complete hatch down conditions , via see through armour for 360 degree situational awareness
