I'm in my early 30s and i plan to come in to Nigeria and possibly start a family when the time is right, but I'm looking for a cool city to set base in. Some people have suggested Lagos, some Abuja, but im sure i can weigh a wider level of options if you guys can help with some recommendations . Here are my specifications:

1. Family friendly.(for when I eventually get married)
2. Security (Safe environment for returnees).
3. Good job/business prospects
4. Affordable House rent. (Possibly 2-3 bedroom flat for 6 months: can I get a good house for 6 months rent?)
5. Serene environment (Middle class society and definitely not rural).
6. Stable Electricity (not constant but at least not the kind with blackout for weeks)
7. Good roads (I can drive).
8. Sensible people with sane mentality (very important that the inhabitants of the city have a good head on their shoulders).

Please if you give a state, please be specific about the area within the state, as I hear some areas may differ within each state.

Enugu is a cool, clean, serene city with natural environment, where things are done orderly.
You'll enjoy life with ease there if you have the money.

Test or no test. If you want to relocate, you have to weigh your options. I will advise you to gather money to buy a house before coming back. Even if you don't like staying , you can always depose the property to get back your money with profit.

Coming to rent an apartment Oh. You might get stuck and frustrated.

On the business: the best moving business ,i can recommend that can sustain and still have sound sleep at night is development property. It's common in Lagos, such as surulere, shomolu/bariga and other city like that.

In summery : before you can make the move you need money, money and money.

Whatever talents we've got is spent on western countries who don't value black people as much. I just want to be able to contribute something to my fatherland. Possibly start a family.

I find your comment very ironic. While many in Nigeria are looking for means to move out of the country and you are planning to move back.

I'm a Yoruba guy who recently went to Enugu, I was amazed with what I saw. The city is so clean and orderly. I moved around a little bit and I wondered why no one is talking about the city foe being one of the coolest. It is like they demolished all old houses and built the city from the scratch because I hardly saw old houses. The roads were so good with serene environment. Can't really say much about their electricity because I was at an estate where there was constant power supply.

Abuja is your sure bet. As for accommodation for a 2-3 bedroom apartment, per annum is from 600k. I don't know if they collect 6 months payment and this 600k is in lugbe axis you can get apartment for such amount.

For a serene environment with light and access road, I advise you get an apartment in an Estate as they are secured and always boasts of electricity.

I have lived in Nigeria for about 19 years, the rest of it was spent abroad. But I've been continously living outside Nigeria for the last decade though I still visit Nigeria once in a while whenever I get the opportunity.
Yes i still have some of my family members in Nigeria but they are just as clueless as I am about this move.

I just feel a certain vibe when I'm in Nigeria that I don't get abroad. The way our people share their happiness with laughter gives me joy. I miss that about Nigeria and I want to be a part of it everyday.

Hi bro, yes you are so right about money as an essential, but about buying a house, I think it takes time to commit such huge funds towards buying one. I'll have to find a suitable environment before committing to buy. That's why I've got to test the waters.

I was actually asking how long you’ve lived here in the states. Because things change drastically at home depending on the political climate of the time. Dollar/ naira value last year versus two years ago is very different.

But since you’ve been visiting home, I feel like you could have picked up a few clues about what the economic situation is like for someone in your class.

Why not find somewhere close to your family? Unless you’ve assessed their location and feel it’s not the type of environment you want.

I got you. I just want you to have a strong tie here. That would be will be like plan B. Should be in case of anything. But if you have family that got your back, that's tie enough.

Have known many like that, even with a house, because of their wife and kids, they couldn't go back ended up miserable. I pray that shouldn't be your portion. Just do it bit by bit. Best of luck.

Move to Canada... Nigeria only get 1% life in its battery...And there is no light to charge it...

This is a major factor in which state ( and area of the state) you would stay.

Well done Op just a quick addition to other awesome advise given so far.

1. Pick either of Lagos or Abuja due to their commercial/cosmopolitan nature as a base .

2. If you can afford it, then within the six months, check out some other states, spend a week/weekend for feasibility studies. There are quite affordable hotels to accommodate that.

3. Make your decision.
( You may need a trusted family, friend or agent as a guide)

In all you do, don't move to Lagos, Lagos is not serene, too congested with lots of traffic.

I will suggest, Akwa ibom, Abuja, or Enugu, those are cool places with serene environment.

Well, since you need advice, I will tell you great places and tell you the great things they offer

Lagos: no traffic, very safe, no flood, stable electricity, very low unemployment, ease of doing business

Abuja: great weather, cheap housing, very low unemployment.

Kano: impressive religious tolerance, very low unemployment, high standard of living, very safe

In fact, you can see greatness everywhere you step foot in Nigeria
