My dear,I agree with you. Imagine 7% of the budget to education whereby developed countries r using above 20%. Education anywhere in the world is expensive. A times I do smile when I hear government say education is free. The question is how standard and equipped are this primary n secondary schools? The educational system in Nigeria needs a total overhauling beginning from our curriculum to funding and teachers or lectures. The system have produced a lot quacks who r interested in making money from education. Education is not a sector for generating revenue just like jamb thinks but for research, invention and innovation of other sectors because without education, all other sectors will run at a slow pace

A former VC of a university in Nigeria, when he was still in office, gave a speech 2 years ago whose topic was 'University funding'. Among the things he said was this gem...'If you want Cambridge level degrees, better be prepared to pay Cambridge level fees' . The guy also commented that his university (ABU Zaria to be precise) had overhead costs of N50million monthly, yet the government gave them N10 million monthly for overhead.

Everyday, on this site, I keep on seeing people blasting our unviersites for not being in the top 1000 or top 100 globally. Well, with most of them on fees less than $200 a year, and an educaiton budget less than $3 billion (when Harvard has a budget of 48 billion.)..and the aforementioned Cambridge chages over 8000 pounds for international students and uk students (Warwick the same thing)...what do you expect??

You are expecting a 9000 pound level performace from a sum less than 200 pounds. That's not possible.

If you want world class unviersites, either we pay higher fees, or we raise our tax to gdp ratio from 6% to 28% or higher, or we take another loan. Or we cut fuel subsides and redirect the money saved to universites.

It looks like a 'parapò' school. So because principal is you know he has to do it their way.

By the time the owners of the educational system beam their searchlilght on the school now a new story will emerge. The people just can't change. They are now exporting their 'tiwa n tiwa' mentality.

The truth is, the school is a highly selective academy. These academies select highly performing students based on academic ability from the word go, expose them to good teachers, and facilites, and reap the fruits when the time comes.

(If I ran a school in Nigeria, a secodary school, and only selected primary school students who were in the top 5 in their class...naturally in 6 years time my school's WASSCE results would be full of A'S and B's and no other letter.)

The UK tends to scrutinise these schools seriously.

Yes,we wont see the born to rule here.Their kids come
to second rated schools over here and when they are done they dont wait to compete and develop themselves.
It is straight to Fed govt agencies and parastatals where they are made kings.
Nothing surprising about Brampton Manor's students feat,it is an Academy and the IQ level required for admission there is high.

I have volunteered as a STEM volunteer in Brampton sir. I taught them A-level Maths (C1, C2, C3, C4) and Statistics, S1 & S2 on the old OCR curriculum.
I also volunteered in schools in East London.
Those students are decidely British and this must be respected. We excite ourselves over students and people that other countries have put in the hard work and offered opportunities to. I think this is embarassing.

This is very impressive. Nigerians are intelligently unique amongst its other African peers. Had we have honest and incorruptible government since the independence, we would been a developed country, even far more than the UK. Because a country blessed with intelligent citizens and with reasonable leaders who always have the interest of the citizens and the development of the country at heart, there's no telling, such country would ever be in the moon.

Alas, reverse is the case here, terrible leaders making the environment stiff and hard for the intelligent citizens. Those who have the money travel out to channel their intelligence to other country favor. While those who don't have the money, either die with their intelligence or channel it to fraud. Only a tiny fraction succeed with it. It's a pity!

And seeing OMOLUABIS dominating the list is a big joy

Intelligence is an individual thing and no group has monopoly of it. We are not better than our African brothers or anybody else. Now, what you can say is the useless Nigerian system has made Nigerians more resilient and more pragmatic in overcoming hardship. The reason Nigerians see the need to succeed as the air they breath. And we only believe success is in academic achievement hence we are ready to kill ourselves for academic success. If you ask me, knowledge is beyond scoring A's or having 5.0 or 4.0 though it is not only Nigerians that have this kind of mentality but generally people from the third world countries like India and the rest.

Now when it comes to applying the true knowledge our Europeans counterpart, americans and even Japanese do better. That is education not just acquiring degree for social validation and job sake. Look at research in physics, chemistry, maths and the sciences in general these people do better but it does not mean they are better than us. But to them true knowledge is not about GPA or having A's all through.

Should the boys and girls be commended ? Yes ofcourse, but I don't see the need for national celebration as we have made it a culture. The same reason why Nigerians excel in academic than her African brothers is the same reason we excel in criminality? It is simply a culture of we must succeed by all means possible that the system has built in us.

What is embarrassing about these students being attributed with Nigerians? One of their parents or both are Nigerians and that reflected in their Nigerian names.

There are countless Nigerians in USA alone that I know that doesn’t have a Nigerian passport and yet they can’t deny their root to Nigeria.

I have a colleague of mine, he was born in the USA and never been to Nigeria before in his whole life but yet he loves and project Nigeria more than I do. He doesn’t even have the Nigerian passport coz his parent doesn’t want him to go to Nigeria (I don’t know their reasons tho).

I have two question for you:
What makes one a Nigerian?

God bless you Mr Dayo (Principal) for your giant stride in making sure minorities also have the opportunity of getting admitted to the prestigious Oxbridge universities in such huge numbers.

Last year was 41 students while this year it increased to 51 admissions into Oxbridge institutions.

Oh we Nigerians know we should improve funding....it's just that the improve funding bit involves two things we don't want to hear...raised fees and raised taxes.

But on a more serious note, taking a second look at this list and reminiscing on the history of Nigeria made me sad for some few moments.

To be honest, the afonjazees have messed up Nigeria. So when it comes to hardwork, diligence, knowledge and almost every other important positive HDIs' the Igbos and Yorubas are almost always on the top. But instead of the yorubas to merge together and develop a unified vision or mission with the Igbos in Nigeria, they chose to sabotage the Igbos and at the same time play a second fiddle to the fulanis whom they are in every way better than.

What yorubas Muslims have done to the great Yoruba nation is honestly unpardonable!!

You have looked at this thing myopically. It takes two to tango.

The online war between the Ibo and the Yoruba to me is childish especially because these are mostly young people with no record of personal wrong or injustice done to them. Let the misunderstandings due to the civil war be forgiven and let a bridge be built.

It can only be done not with accusations and counter accusations but accomodation and mutual respect.

On Nigeria, I wish the next president come 2023 come from the East. It can be done when the Easterners select 6 best candidates and negotiating with the West for support on one of them. Will this work? I don't know until we try it.
