Hello Docs, Please when is the best time to write USMLE Step 1? I've read online that it's based on preclinicals, so does that mean one will be able to take the exam while still in med school; i.e just after L300? Also, I've read that to get a competitive residency in the US, it's best to do some elective rotations prior to graduation... is it really possible to leave the country for a month+ while your course is still ongoing? Also, what are the chances of doing research while in med school? Please I really need answers. Thanks in advance. 1 Like 1 Share |

Good evening Everyone,I have some questions to ask. Is it possible to go for a US elective while in a Nigerian Medical School? If you have done it before from Nigeria or know someone who has please reply. I want to know if it's possible to do, in this tight Nigerian Medical educational Setting. hilary4712:Well, it depends on your school. In my own school, there's a window period of a month or thereabouts btw MB3 and resumption for 600L where students are allowed to do electives anywhere . I know about three guys who were in the USA 2yrs ago for this same purpose. |

Darkwallet: Which school is that? |

Darkwallet:Please how long is the window period? And I thought it is done only when you are in final year |

Martins134:It's still in final year, just before resumption. It depends on your school. |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Martins134: 8:57pm On Oct 09, 2020 |
Darkwallet:Ok. But I know it will be expensive |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Nobody: 3:18pm On Oct 10, 2020 |
Darkwallet:So it means one has to pass his 3RD MB before ever applying for the electives. Because your being in final year has to match with your College transcript Moreover one month doesn't look sufficient to do the whole process of applying to different places then embassy stuff too. Is it advisable for someone to defer his admission to another year, so as to chase it or should the person just disappear from class for months and later join the moving academic calender? Please I need answers |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Nobody: 3:30pm On Oct 10, 2020 |
Darkwallet:Please, How are those electives done? Are they done before 3rd MB? Or Is it 3rd MB before electives? |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Martins134: 3:56pm On Oct 10, 2020 |
hilary4712:It is actually after 3rd MB And most schools in the US require your 1st USMLE score |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Nobody: 4:03pm On Oct 10, 2020 |
Martins134:Thanks for your reply From what I've seen so far it doesn't look as if, one month is sufficient to do the whole process of applying to different places then embassy stuff too. Some schools require IMGs to apply 2-6 months earlier. Is it advisable for someone to defer his admission to another year, so as to chase it or should the person just disappear from class for months and later join the moving academic calender? Please I need answers |
Re: Medical Doctors' Forum: Let Us Know You! by Martins134: 4:07pm On Oct 10, 2020 |
hilary4712:To make it easier, look for US schools or hospitals that have IOUs with your school and start the process early maybe few weeks before beginning of your 6th year. And believe me when I say that the process is very long and expensive but really worth it. |
