I could remember the condition of Block 1, Awo Hall in OAU. And some of the Awo Hall students used to do what we called "shotput" due to bad toilets and bathrooms.

One major disadvantage of encouraging people to point finger at authority and shout corruption is that this eventually blinds people to the concept of self help. Part of our difficulty in Nigeria is that those that castigate the idea of self help, because they fear it may cause people not to blame government enough, have unfortunatly won.

Nothing stopped university unions, motivational students, or lecturers organising cleanup days at the Uni, their own uni, except a chronic Nigeria blame culture, sown, cultivated and left to flourish in the hearts of Nigerians through the years by individuals motivated by political power. Organising ways of cleaning up their hostels and bathroom facilities shouldn’t be mitigated by the physical condition of the structures. A place can be poor structurally yet clean.

This is so sad. Why would you treat humans beings this way. These are tomorrow's future. Worst still, people in position of power as VCs, Registrars, etc. had it so good in their days when they ate 3 square meals using vouchers, then given scholarships to go and study abroad for their masters and doctorates. The students should abduct the VC and other executive officers of the university and lock them up up in those toilets for 24 hours so they get first hand experience of what it feels like.

How much will it take sink boreholes for each dormitory exclusively for servicing the toilets and bathrooms. Having failed to take the initiative, I'll like to use this medium to call on the students' union government to create a GOFUND ME account. There are alumnus globally who can help. So make it your legacy project by:
1. Consulting borehole company and builders who can can provide estimates on how much is needed to refurbish these toilets and make it functional (including borehole, overhead water tanks, water pumping machine, etc.)
2. Multiplying these by the number of dormitories in the university.
3. Raising fund through https://uk.gofundme.com/ (publicise as widely as possible) There are UNN alumnus with goodwill and good hearts who will generously donate in sterling, dollars, euros, etc.
4. Awarding the contract to a trustworthy company and be transparent about all financial transactions.
5. Updating donours with progress of the project from the beginning to the very end by post ing pictures and financial accounts details online.

NB: I spearheaded this sort of thing regarding the primary and secondary schools I attended years ago. We rebuilt the structures, fenced it, provided electronic equipments, installed ACs in staff rooms and offices, stocked the libraries. The staff and students are now the envy of other schools in the area.

The school management purposely left those hostels that way , if go round that school all you will see are 3 story buildings 4 story buildings so many of them that if look at it you notice that they are hostels , owned by some highly connected school Administrators and even some professors . The worse thing is that most of those big big hostels were constructed newly and a year' s rent in any of those hostels with water goes as high as 250 ,000 ,. just go and make some inquiries that's why they have totaly abandoned zik' s hostels and so many other hostels within the school

I think both shd be looked at critically. Govt is elected for reasons which amongst other includes its cascading effect cos it is easier top-down than down-up. No separation between the people and its government so none of them should be excused. For university case, it is still like the Govt and the "people" where the money sent by the government (FG) will still be embezzled by the people (the school authority). Hope it's clearer, never fall for the antics you earlier painted else you will always be lopsided.
