The video of a project defence held virtually surfaced online on Tuesday and is currently causing stir on social media.

In the video, a Nigerian student identified as Aina is seen in a Zoom session trying to defend his final year project, in partial fulfillment for the award of a Bachelors degree.
However, one of his lecturers, Olayinka Ohunakin berates him for his appearance, adding that it is enough to cancel his previous presentation.

The lecturer accused the student of not dressing properly saying "Look at me, look at Dr Leramo, everybody is well dressed. Look at the way you are appearing".

The lecturer added that until Aina barbs his hair and shaves his beards, he will not be allowed to present.

Aina finally shaves his beards and was allowed to defend his final year project which according to him the defence was a success.

He's a product of CU and not a quranic school, shaving off his taliban-like beards is the best for him.

Very hilarious. Meanwhile during my postgraduate degree in a UK Uni, there was no appearance nor dress code. Loads of persons wore shorts, winter jackets, even leggings. Some white dudes had earrings on. And this was in a very professional medical programme. The African society is just a different one.

Well CU isn't in UK and doesn't strive to behave like a UK university. It has her own community culture and ideology which should not be subjected to thoughts and norms of westernisation. Despite her conservative nature and age, it's doing great in the comity of reputable varsities as attested by the British ranking organization (THE2019), where it clearly surpassed a number of UK varsities.

The idea that a Nigerian university located in Ota must conform to the culture of a British university for legitimacy reeks of intellectual colonialism. The Qatari man, Ahmed expects his workers to wear jalamia to work is no less than Sir Cornwell who expects his to suit and tie up.

Those that want British themed education should add more money and head for MMIA. London is only six hours away.

The lecturer should know that in this season of lockdown and covid-19, going to places like barbing saloon is a no no.

Rules are rules oga. That school you went to may not have a rule against such but CU has one against it. I doubt that dude can appear in front of Adenuga for an interview like that. he looks like sango shrine errand boy in those beards.

U have stated here that CU doesn't strive to become like a UK university, but you forgot to limit your assertion to reflect that it doesn't strive to behave like a UK Uni in the code of decency it has as it's template. Cos in other aspects like innovative research and performance ratings of it's graduates it does strive to have a global brand like that of UK Unis or other top world Unis. If u had carefully looked at my last line statement, it addressed the issue of Nigerian universities being in our African setting which has its uniqueness based on our moral values.

Lol...I get ur point but I didn't criticize their rules, I only made my opinion being that in some climes physical appearance are played down as major reasons for a defense to be put on hold. Most interviews in Nigeria are strict to those who are general applicants. Some persons don't even need to appear in interviews to get the same jobs some others will put on ten suits just to look corporate to get.
