Raw Reviews recaps and reactions

Well this was quite a Cena-esque opening promo.
Drew McIntyre came out and said that if he didn’t show up with his fractured jaw, WWE would strip him of the title, so he decided he’d show up each week and leave in an ambulance if he had to. He decided to make his match with Randy Orton at Clash of Champions an Ambulance match. He then showed us a photo of all the men he’s Claymored, photoshopped in hospital beds. Ugh.
Then Scrap Daddy himself, Adam Pearce, came out and said that if Randy is unable to make it, Keith Lee would be his opponent at Clash. Keith came out and the two men did the standard hand shake when both don’t let go.
I hated most of this. I didn’t want them to throw Keith into a WWE championship match so soon because I don’t see this push being sustained the way it would have naturally with a crowd. This is basically a free for all right now, with wrestling promotions booking the way they want to book without fear of live crowd retribution.
Heh cool. See what I did there?
Then they revealed that the ambulance match stipulation would also stand if Keith Lee won this match.
Drew and Keith traded big man power throughout their match in the main event, but then RETRIBUTION showed up and beat both men down. And no one from the Raw locker room cared about them.
Except… The Hurt Business? They came out and fought the group, and then Keith and Drew dove over the top rope and took everyone out to close the show.

This is my only feature for the show because I need to vent.

WWE have not made RETRIBUTION look good one time. Not one damn time since the start of this nonsense. Not only has the bad booking harmed them, it’s harmed the whole show. Because of WWE’s refusal to let them be true anarchists, they’ve been booked in random spots and didn’t reveal their motives really until last week, sort of. It makes them look, my most favorite word when describing them, inconsistent.
Then - Raw’s locker room. They have not cared at all about this group. Mysterios were beat down, no one helped. Lights flickering in matches, no one went to find them. They invaded the production truck, no one went to protect the crew and find them. No one cares to find them, fight them, keep them out… nothing.
EXCEPT The Hurt Business! … The Hurt Business? Huh?
Okay during the show they went up to Adam Pearce and said they’d help out so it’s not like they just came out of nowhere. However, how are they the first Raw members to step up to RETRIBUTION? How?!? Two big babyfaces were getting beaten up by a gang of 15 people, a few weeks back the Mysterios, production members, production equipment, a single window, a car… but the whole Raw roster has never bothered to stop them. These guys are heels! They deserve a ton of respect now and did a very not heel thing.
Both visuals of The Hurt Business marching down to the ring and of Drew and Keith diving onto everyone were good visuals. But WWE has been so ridiculously inconsistent with all of RETRIBUTION stuff that I just don’t care at all. I’m actually mad about this. This group sucks and WWE sucks for not doing good by this idea.

Seth Rollins def. Dominik Mysterio - Seth and Dom tossed each other all over the cage. Murphy was yelled at and somewhat uncomfortably slapped around backstage and told not to come out. During the match, Murphy showed up and tossed a kendo stick in the ring. Once Dom took over Rey tossed him his own kendo stick. He wailed on Seth and hit the frog splash. Rey tried helping Dom out but Murphy attacked Rey and closed the cage door shut on who he thought was Dom, but of course it was Seth.
Both men were on top of the cage and Seth hit a great suplex to the floor. He then hit two curb stomps to win, and Murphy held the cage door open for him, but Seth had enough and attacked him. That relationship should be over now, but you never know. Seth was being really abusive and manipulative to Murphy before the match and Murphy may have some Stockholm Syndrome.

Street Profits def. The Artists - What a start to this as Cesaro gave Dawkins a mean uppercut to make him loopy. The fake crowd told us they wanted the smoke when we came back from break and I appreciated that. Kind of took me aback at first remembering there was no crowd. Nakamura did a cool move where he set Dawkins up in the ropes and slid under him and like suplexed him onto the mat. The AIR that Montez got when Cesaro lifted him was insane! The match ending fell a little flat with me as a splash without fanfare got Dawkins the win.
This was not a bad match. I just wasn’t into that finish which sometimes is good, but I kind of expected Street Profits to win anyway and I was looking for that big frog splash ending we’ve been treated to. Tez hit only one that didn’t connect because Nak got his knees up and that was it. I have a feeling this isn’t over yet, though.

Asuka def. Mickie James via...? / Zelina Vega steps up - We don’t really know what happened here, except that the women were having a decent match but then the ref called for the bell, and even Mickie looked confused by it. The referee went to tend to her but there was no explanation given.
After, Zelina Vega, after getting mad at Andrade and Angel Garza and leaving them, walked into the ring and said “Don’t even bother asking if I’m ready for Asuka, because I’m ready for the title.” Then she SLAPPED Asuka in the face! I have long been waiting for Zelina to show this side of herself and look to fight for a championship!

Riott Squad def. Natalya and Lana - Natty and Lana were actually in sync to start the match, then Ruby pinned Lana really quick. Then Nia and Shayna beat up Natty and Lana and Nia put Lana through a table.
Nothing to see here… typical booking after someone’s husband cut a promo against the company she works for. I’m sure this was booked well in advance. grin

Cedric Alexander def. Ricochet - (RIP RicoRic) Cedric cut a great promo talking about how he cared more about making money than sticking with friends and getting beat up every week. When he said that he was taking more beatings for Apollo when he was US champion, I felt that, and Apollo had no retort for him. Sometimes the bad guys are right!
Really nasty kicks by Cedric and showing that they really know each other by dodging some of Ricochet’s moves. That lumbar check on Ricochet was INCREDIBLE!!! This looked like a blood feud and I loved it. RETRIBUTION decided to rain on Hurt Business’ celebration and spoke crap and I don’t care. I’m done with that.

Kevin Owens def. Aleister Black - Aleister targeted KO’s left knee throughout the match and looked like he was going top tap when Aleister locked a kneebar in. I forget how great KO is at making me believe he is in pain and is about to quit but fights through. The lights flickered and KO took advantage with a stunner to win. Commentary the whole time was questioning Aleister’s motivations for turning on KO and yeah we would all really like to know why, guys.

Raw Underground - Dolph Ziggler decided to get off of commentary for the evening and have a match at Underground and he won his first one. Riddick Moss took him on afterward and then all of a sudden Braun Strowman showed up and took Ziggler and Moss out. They tried to double team Braun, but naturally that did nothing. Then Dabba-Kato got in the ring, and Shane got in between them and made the match for next week. That should be pretty fun at least!

Whew. So, after all of this show has been absorbed, my feelings are that we need a draft (and that seems to be starting with Braun and Mandy), we need new feuds, and RETRIBUTION needs to get to the damn point already. I’m tired of this. Raw drags and is hurt by the inconsistency and repetition.
We need better camerawork too, but this will be 2,000 more words if I go into that

WWE NXT Reviews recaps and reactions

Star Maker
Shotzi Blackheart had herself a star making match against Io Shirai.
Some credit will obviously have to go to the women’s champion, but it takes two to tango and Blackheart more than held her own. This was a fantastic opening bout. And despite losing, it elevated Shotzi to a spot where she can conceivably believably compete for the NXT women’s title in the very near future. Much like, and maybe even more than, Damian Priest being elevated by losing to Finn Bálor, this is how a wrestler can win by losing.
This isn’t news, but the NXT women’s division is fire. Elevating Blackheart is just another plus for what is probably the best women’s division in wrestling.
There will be a #1 contender’s battle royal next week where all the women will fight for the chance to face Io Shirai at TakeOver on Oct. 4. Shotzi is in the match, but it wouldn’t make sense for her to win right away. That honor could go to Rhea Ripley, who is coming off that intense cage match with Mercedes Martinez. But that feels like a feud that needs more time to build than the one week they’d have prior to TakeOver.
In fact, with both the men and women crowning a #1 contender next week, I wouldn’t be surprise if both winners are up and comers or an old feud given the lack of time to tell a story.

And Still (part I)
The main event of the evening was a North American title match between Damian Priest and Timothy Thatcher.
It was a fun bout. In general, I enjoy Thatcher’s matches because they’re always very different than anything else we see in WWE. His catch technique inevitably lead to a mash up of different styles. This time it was Priest’s heavy hitting brawler style vs. the more technical style of Timothy. Plus it’s always exciting to see what Thatcher is going to do when he finally hooks a limb.
Likely to the surprise of no one, Damian did not lose his first title defense. But the bigger takeaway for me is how NXT went from having a very weak midcard to a very stacked one in a matter of months.

And still (part II)
NXT tag matches are probably my favorite tag matches in wrestling.
This is all subjective. That should be pretty obvious but it warrants repeating here and there. But NXT books their tag matches in a way where things get crazy but never too too crazy where it feels like abject chaos. The tag title match tonight, which saw Breezango defend successfully against the former champs Imperium, was an example of that.
The match was booked in a way that almost illustrated that Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner are the better team. They’re just so smooth and their chemistry is so good. In general, they just looked slightly better than Breezango. But the champs have more experience and can gut out the long runs of offense from their opponents and figure out a way to win.
That’s OK too. Sometimes, the champions aren’t the all around best, but they’re the best right now.

Badass
This new side of Kushida is excellent. And just what he needed.
A couple of injuries have derailed various pushes for the Japanese superstar (especially the first one), and it seemed like Kushida became lost in the fray in NXT. That changed last week when he beat the ever living hell out of Velveteen Dream. It was a side of the man we have never seen before and it was almost refreshing.
That continued this week.
Austin Theory came out and smugly tried to write off his loss to Bronson Reed last week as a fluke. He issued an open challenge to prove that point. It was a move that’d backfire.
Kushida walked to the ring with a purpose. It wasn’t a complete squash. Clearly they’re too high on Theory for that. But it was very one sided with Kushida aggressively targeting the younger man’s arm. He would do so almost viciously at times before tapping Austin to the hoverboard lock.
This is a good way to build a wrestler back up. They told a story where he was attacked after a match and came back with a vengeance. Even if Dream ends up winning their eventual feud, and that’s more likely, this aggressive Kushida can survive that and keep rolling.

He’s just not that into you
Killian Dain really really doesn’t want to team with Drake Maverick.
In fact, this week, he was content to sit in the back and watch Drake get beat down in a 2 on 1 handicap match instead of helping out the man he was scheduled to tag alongside. It took William Regal telling him to go out to the ring to get him to even walk out there. And even then, it was just to toss Maverick into the ring, telling him to take his beating like a man.
It took Roddy Strong talking trash to the big guy like an idiot that led to Dain actually getting physically involved, his dominance so much that Undisputed got themselves DQ’d. And in the end, Killian still punched Drake out.
This has been a slow build and rightfully so. Dain is not the type of guy to change his mind and suddenly want to help Drake Maverick. It would logically take a while Maverick to prove himself to the Beast of Belfast. If Killian has ever watched WWE TV, he’s probably seen Drake piss himself so it’s understandable that he’d be apprehensive.

All the Rest:
- Tommaso Ciampa easily defeated some enhancement talent this week. He went to beat down the man afterwards when he was interrupted by Jake Atlas, who cut a strong, quick promo about how next week, he’s going to show Ciampa how dangerous he could be. This is a much more interesting Jake Atlas compared to the “I was rooting for you to beat me, Drake Maverick!” Jake Atlas that debuted.

- Finn Bálor cut a strong video promo, comparing Finn as champion in the past (a man who helped build the brand) and Finn as champion now (a man who the brand needs). I’m more excited for this reign for Bálor than his last because this time around, he seems to have complete command of his character.

- Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter defeated Xia Li and Jessi Kamea as NXT works to establish the KCs as a tag team. They looked really good together but with no other tag teams in NXT, I’m not sure what the end game is. It’s too soon for a tag title shot but if not that, what?

This was an enjoyable episode where everything seemed to bring something to the table. It wasn’t a big episode in the sense there were no major story beats that moved forward, but it was still a more than solid

WWE Raw Reviews recaps and reactions

- Roman’s gonna get you
Jey Uso’s never going to see it coming. I feel bad for him.
I can’t blame him too much though, when he has entrusted Roman, his blood, with his life and has felt that Roman would never betray his bloodline. I also can’t blame him after seeing that absolutely incredible video package narrated by Paul Heyman on the Anoa’i bloodline. Obviously Roman and Heyman must care about the family!
Roman doesn’t give a shit about his family anymore. An assumption? Nope. We’ll get to why in a moment.
I didn’t expect this to happen, but Roman Reigns actually showed up for the “Samoan Street Fight” main event and put in the work! Roman fought off Sheamus and Corbin, even a Samoan drop on the announce table to Sheamus. He pummeled Corbin with a steel chair and speared Sheamus through the barricade.
Jey took a Deep Six and a hellacious bump through a table, but the finish played into the final masterful moment of the show. Corbin had Roman in the ring and Jey came from out of nowhere and blasted him in the face with the Universal title. He pinned Corbin and won the match as Roman was regaining his composure in the corner.
Jey picked up the title, started to raise it, but tossed it to Roman instead and hugged him. That hug lasted a long time and put a genuine smile on Roman’s face as they embraced and expressed love for each other.
Or so we thought.
Jey left the ring and walked up the ramp, as Heyman got in the ring looking at Roman and Roman looked at him, and that smile went away real quick. He gave Jey the death stare to end all death stares as the camera faded to black.
I loved everything about this. It’s been way too long but this heel turn is so damn good.
Jey Uso is going to die at Clash of Champions.

- Trance
Alexa told Nikki that she’s faced Bayley before, and lost. Nikki Cross said that Bayley only beat her because of Sasha Banks. After a few minutes, Nikki finally asked Alexa about that Sister Abigail last week and what’s going on with her, and Alexa responded by saying that she doesn’t really know what’s going on, and that she feels like she isn’t in control sometimes.
That was a great thing to throw in there, having Alexa address the changes for the first time. She’s being coy but knows that there’s something supernatural going on.
During Lacey’s and Nikki’s match, Lacey was working over Nikki’s arm. Lacey had “hand sanitizer” in her purse and she took it out and sprayed it in Nikki’s face, in front of the referee, and he did nothing about it. Huh? And Nikki wasn’t too bothered by it so was there like 0% alcohol in it? She won though so, cool!
Lacey crawled out of the ring and started yelling at Alexa on commentary, and then mentioned The Fiend. Alexa’s been so great these past two weeks, changing her demeanor in a snap after someone mentions him. She Sister Abigail-ed Lacey and slowly walked off in a trance.
They had to have Nikki away from her so she just got out of the ring celebrating and walked up the ramp by herself, which was odd since they were being besties right before. I like when they make sense of things, and there wasn’t much in that regard. Nikki should have been at Alexa’s side after the match but we had to get here somehow, so whatever. I think this is all going to come to a head at Clash. I’m really excited to see what comes next!

- You’re nothing without me - When asked if she used Bayley, Sasha responded that Bayley used her and now she’s useless to Bayley. She got emotional talking about their history together at the Performance Center. She said they told the world they’d take over WWE together. She began crying as she talked about the pictures and posters hanging on the walls. She called Bayley an idiot and naive, and she’s nothing without her.
And then out of nowhere Bayley attacked her with a chair and almost pulled the same move, putting her neck in and stomping it to smithereens, but some PC folks intervened and got Bayley off of her.
Sasha, why would you show up? If they were doing a via satellite thing, request to do it from home! It was noble, though. The emotion pouring out of Sasha only drove it home even more how much she was hurt by this betrayal. Whenever this match ends up happening, whew boy it is going to rule.

- Big E straight up wrecked a dude - Big E returned this with that aggression people have been asking him for. He baited Sheamus and the security guard who tricked him weeks back into the garage for revenge. E only got a few licks in on Sheamus but unloaded on the security guard. We’re talking a belly to belly on to a car windshield before putting him in the trunk.
While I agree that Big E should keep his goofy personality, I also think he needs to show the other side. If someone does him wrong, he should get angry. It helps round out his character. He’s fun, and silly, and all things we love about Big E. But he’s also an absolute badass when you cross him.
I can’t wait to see him beat the hell out of Sheamus now.

- AJ Styles def. Sami Zayn - WWE announced tonight they’re following proper protocols that dictate when two men claim to be Intercontinental champion, there must be a ladder match to decide who is that true champion. It won’t just be Sami Zayn vs. Jeff Hardy. AJ Styles will obviously be added in given the story beats. But it will still be a good match.

- The Dirt Sheet - Miz told us that he had Mandy Rose traded to Raw so that she would no longer prevent Otis from reaching his fullest potential, and now he can cash in his Money in the Bank contract. He said that he’s heard that Mandy has moved on from him, and then Otis and Tucker came out and wrecked them both. It ended with Miz in his tighty whities as Otis ripped all his clothes off. In the back, Kayla tried to interview Miz and Morrison but Miz called someone and said that somehow all of that was a plan.
That’s entertainment!
*whispers* That’s not entertainment.

- Cesaro def. Gran Metalik - Kalisto and Lince Dorado are fighting over who’s advice Metalik should listen to. Metalik tried rolling up Cesaro immediately and the urgency to win never left him. Cesaro worked on Metalik’s arm as Kalisto and Lince continued to argue, and then they got up on the apron and got thrown out by the referee. Cesaro won which was obvious from the start. Bleh.

-Not as much of a strong showing this week from SmackDown, but they’re still handling the most important things perfectly. Roman’s death stare, Bayley’s viciousness, and Alexa’s split personality were the best things about WWE this week. Raw really needs to step up
