Tomorrow ur children will ended up going to commercial centres to play it, thereby mingles up with gangs,

Assuming is one of those electronic learning gadget , that's how u would still return it...Poverty minded, you can't afford it today doesn't mean you can't afford it tomorrow, and if by tomorrow, God bless u with good cash and u end up buying for the junior ones , if I be that your present child, I will not forgive you..
Train your child in a way they should grow , not staring their mindset to poverty
... That's the best for birthday gift , cos most parents and schools authority will not allow food items for birthday gift.

Which one is poverty minded for returning a gift, nothing wrong in what he did.

A man returned a gift you say it is poverty mentality.

This. I don't understand how some nairalanders reason sometimes. Only someone very comfortable in his own skin and space would dare return that gift.

It is such a pity! Most parents go the extra mile to put their kids in schools that are practically above their present status. Putting their children under undue pressure which at the end create complex issues for them.

Please schools should stop celebrating birthdays in school, please, biko. I use God beg you.

I sent my child to school to learn and not to celebrate birthdays, I came back from work one day and saw this play station 4 in a carton, I asked them who own. they said my daughter classmates celebrated her birthday and shared these gift to them.

I quickly ask them to reparkage the gift and take it back to the school, before I return from work the next day.

MY REASON IS THIS: all fingers are not equal, when it is my daughter's birthday they would be expecting a gift of equal amount.

The parent may be rich and I am not, they give my child what I can't afford for her which is a recipe for greed. she should be contented with what I can afford,

These her young mind should be moulded early to adapt to reality.

Our perception are different.
You're free to decide what suit you.

My thought: if you can afford a school where a pupil gifted PS4 to her peers in class, I think you're above average in the social class.

It's obvious the said school is not for the poor where a child distributed PS4 to her class mates meaning you ain't poor either.. If I were you I won't return the gift.. Your action is WITCHCRAFTY

This is not right. There are more productive ways to teach them about greed. If their uncle or aunt bought them a PS4 on their birthday, would you ask them to take it back just to teach them your own lesson on greed? You just unnecessarily stifled their happiness for the time being. Poverty chop elbow. cry

The right thing to do, if you care, is to locate who bought them the gift. Confirm that the person's parent(s) is(are) okay with lest we have a case of someone using his/her tuition fee or stealing his/her parents money just to impress our of peer pressure.

Did u read what the op wrote

It was a souvenir at a birthday

When hus daughter birthday comes around, other parents in the class will expect him to also spend huge on souvenirs. That is why he returned it

I think he did right.

Another thing he could have done is keep it, but refuse to give expensive souvenirs when it gets to the birthday of his daughter

As a man, op has made his decision.

All these hypocrites saying the O.P has poverty mentality should just shut up with their stupid opinion. The man was right to have returned the gift to teach his ward good morals,, why on Earth will a celebrant give PS4 as gifts in a school ? why didn't he gift textbooks or educational materials to them? Contentment, Respect and Obedience are one of the core values you should imbibe in your children

The medicine is worse than the ailment and will create badwill between your family and the celebrants family.

The man has made his decision, it is own decision.

He returned the gift because it seems inappropriate for his kid, anything wrong in that.

Must you collect everything everyone gives to you?

The gift was for the child not the father. But your Nigerian mentality would make you think the father has the right to overrule the gift that belong to the son just for his one selfish reason of not being able to replicate such gesture, which I believe no one even expect him to replicate.

Your child would resent you for a long time for this.

Keeping it won't force you to give the same or even celebrate when it's your turn if you don't want to.

Teach your children to be confident and comfortable in the midst of plenty not intimidated because you sound really intimidated

Guy ur choice anyway. But it is not sound.
Who are those sitting expecting stiffs for ur daughters birthday?

What happens if ur daughter doesn't celebrate hers at school? Guy nothing happens, the day comes and goes.

From experience nobody cares if ur ward does not celebrate his/her birthday.

U would only be doing ur daughter a disfavor when you continue to send back her gifts

The child lives in his father house, do you even think at all, who pays the fees for the child, if the child can pay the school fees then he can collect any gift he or she likes.

Any small thing, you shout Nigerian mentality, you have a low opinion of yourself if you are Nigerian

OP it is a gift to a child. The gift itself isn't bad, it can help the child develop if you guide how it is utilized.
Refusing to accept on the grounds that you can't afford is a sign of inferiority and not contentment and doing that will have negative impact on the child cause he/she will feel inferior to other classmates.
Rather, I advise you locate the parents of the child who donated the gift and just appreciate them. You can even joke with them on the matter on how you couldn't come to terms with accepting it cause you can't afford it at the moment, who knows, that might be the door to your breakthrough. By the way, your being able to fund your child in same school with the others mean you are capable.

Did his daughter's school make it mandatory that he must return the favor when it's his daughter's birthday?
Is his daughter the only child in that school?
Hasn't his daughter been receiving stuff during other children's birthdays in her school?
So why does he think he is in a competition?

Typical African mentality undecided. Black man is cursed..

it's obvious you have not experienced such before. A teacher teaching in one of those affluent kind of school brought a similar experience to me not quite long ago. She even had the honesty of heart to intimate me about the inherent dangers of it.

In her school, it became an obvious competition for parents to outdo one another to the detriment of the parents that don't have equal means. Even in the best private schools not all parents are of equal financial standing. All fingers are definitely not equal. Let me put it this way, when it is the turn of the father who asked his daughter to return the gift to reciprocate and he cannot, the daughter will feel like a failure at school. Psychologically, it is not good for both the father and daughter. He took an absolutely flawless decision if you ask me.

I do not surmise that there are no other ways of handling the situation but his methodology is not bad at all. Another method would have been to have a heart to heart talk with the daughter and explain the dangers of such practices to the school authorities. Might not necessarily change anything though.

Oh my bad. It still doesn't matter. Nothing is wrong with a souvenir. If people expect you to spend beyond your means, will you spend? As long as no one can force you to pay, people's expectation shouldn't be a problem.
