‘I married a Yoruba Muslim in 1984’ – Onyeka Onwenu breaks silence

Onyeka Onwenu, an ace singer and actress, has finally opened up on her connubial relationship, revealing that she got married to a Yoruba Muslim in 1984.

The mother of two children, who had always kept her intimate life private, brought this revelation to light in ‘My Father’s Daughter’, her memoir, which will be released on October 1.

In the autobiography, the 68-year-old movie star revealed how they fell in love more than three decades ago and how the union brought about the birth of her two sons — Tijani and Ibrahim.

“In this book, I am, perhaps for the very first time, setting the records straight with respect to my connubial relationship. Yes, I was married. I married a man I fell in love with in 1984,” she said.

“We have two children: Tijani and Ibrahim. (Ibrahim later changed the first letter of his name from I to A, and thus became Abraham.) My husband is Yoruba, and was a Muslim when we met.”

The autobiography also documents her life as a musician, activist, wife, mother, and politician as well as her formative contact with feminism.

The author shared how the war — between 1967 to 1970 — scalded her teenage life, the debilitating effects of successive realities, and how her family remained bound amid the frightening experience.

She also documents her years in America, the conflicts that were the products of being a migrant, her experience with workplace sexual harassment, and her decision to quit her job at the UN.

Speaking about the forthcoming book, Expand Press Limited, her publishers, described ‘My Father’s Daughter’ as a deeply personal account of Onwenu’s life spanning previously unknown details.

“On the marriage front, she explores challenges women face and how she refused to shrink herself to accommodate her husband’s insecurities about her fame,” it said.

“It’s a memoir young persons must read. Women especially will glean numerous lessons from her life experience since successful women in Nigeria rarely share their story in a candid manner.”

Onwenu’s memoir is available here for pre-order.

I really don’t understand op’s intention by the ‘Yoruba Muslim’ definition of a Nigerian.

Onyeka Onwenu could as well have married an Hausa or Ibo man.

After all Ned Nwoko is not defined/described by his religion.

Congratulations

What is so special in monogamous relationship? If monogamy is natural, why do we struggle at it? No one teaches fish how to swim? Why do we have books on how to avoid cheating? To answer this question,we look at what researchers revealed

Evolutionary scientist David Barish compared monogamy among various animals.

Only 9 percent of mammals practice monogamy

29 percent of primates are monogamous

Before westernisation, 86 percent of indigenous society are no monogamous

Overfamiliarisation with a partner kills a woman libido

30 percent of women have extra-marital affair despite being happy with their marriage.

The numbers are against monogamy. One advantage of monogamy over polygamy is the assurance of a mate for every male. No group of wealthy powerful men can marry off all the women leaving the non powerful men single.. AThe spread of Christianity could be be a dominant factor. Monogamy offers an exclusive sence of ownership each woman on the man rather than having to share him with other women.

Monogamy restricts each party from love and sex with another. Are these two not one of the sweetest feelings? Limited my experience of them should be seen as punnishnent and not something to jubilate to.

In casual friendship, my friend could have other friends beside me and I am cool with that. But in monogamy, It is me and me alone. Any attempt to share love and sex with another is considered cheating. A woman should only love one guy but she can share her love among her children equally. Why can’t she love six men equally? Is this not hypocrisy? It means the heart is capable of loving many but man Jealously choose to limit it to one. In some cases, we argue over what constitutes exclusive acts? Holding hands, seeing one another naked, sharing a bed, kissing etc.

Before we say monogamy is natural, think again.

Awesome. Whatever makes her happy. I personally don't have a problem with intertribal marriages. I actually find them very cute and sassy.
