These are public bikes that you can scan and ride. Costs about 400 naira per hour

Edit: The picture no gree upload so here's a picture of the pool in my building that I have never used

Pictures are refusing to attach cos of the file size and the option for decreasing image ratio on Nairaland doesn't seem to be available again. Anyone know why?

Always good to hear from you.

Covid 2.0.

So after the whole saga of Vietnamese guys smuggling Chinese peeps into the country and bringing back the pandemic, some areas were shut down.

Luckily, it was controlled pretty fast. However, many Centers went on a two weeks break. By the time they resumed, some were too broke to continue or had lost students or had issues of scared parents who didn't want their kids to resume just yet.

This in turn affected we teachers including me. I lost about 3 of my classes after staying indoors for 2 weeks. August wasn't a too good time for me but I managed to pull through with what I still had.

Finally, things picked up, I never got those classes back but at least I was back in class ...then my bike started giving issues

Accident/Bike issues

Now remember that up till now, I worked only in the evenings. I was comfy working just a couple of hours in the evening of some days and full time on weekends.

Then I heard that in this same Vietnam, people earn 4000 USD per month and my brain reset. I wanted more. I asked myself why I was wasting my mornings and afternoons and some days altogether doing nothing.

This was partly because the morning jobs available were offering really low salaries to non natives and I wasn't about to commit long term to such and give up sleeping in at the same time. Coupled with the Covid-19 2.0 and August being bad, I knew I had to do something. So I began looking and applying again

Back to the topic....I was low on cash, hadn't worked for a while and then bike started giving me issues. Remember the bike is very important as it enables me go to work at different locations easily so I had to fix it but it was like I earn, spend it on repairs, problem begins the next day, spend again, new problem. Kai, it really wasn't a good month.

September came which is a good time to get new jobs but I was still struggling. after getting a new battery and paying for series of repairs, I decided to sell it off and buy another second hand bike. MISTAKE.

On the way to sell it, had an accident. Back tyre bursted or something but God saved me. I had just got off the highway into one secluded lane and traffic light turned red behind me. Long story short, had to buy a new tire and by the time I got to where I would sell it, the price wasn't even up to all I spent on repairs.

I was desperate, far from home and scared of driving home on that bike so I made another hasty decision and bought a second hand bike.

Later found out I bought it at double what I was supposed to, the place I bought it is full of scammers and thieves and the bike is faulty too..

I did not see cry to cry cos I started the whole earn, repair, earn repair cycle again untop money I did not have. Worse was, I tried selling it and again the price...let me just keep quiet.

It would have been better I added money and bought a new bike but too late. Lesson learned though. We move...

Now let me digress a little...

Some might be wondering why 4000 USD is a big deal. Well, if you're here, it is!

If you earn 4000 USD a month, and stay in a one bedroom like mine, you pay rent of 237 USD. You have 3763 USD left.

From 3763 USD, you spend let's say 100 USD on food or let's live large...200 USD which is outrageous. You still have 3573 USD left.

Let say you decide to drink, party, shop et al and spend the 573 USD every month which again is crazy, you have 3000 USD at the end of each month left

3000 USD
69,474,419 VND
1,144,384 Naira

You dig now bah ?

Welcome back @whyna ,its good to see updates from you again. Have you tried to look for other worthy jobs you can do to make money in vietnam. Maybe you can combine with your teaching. Like sourcing and exporting goods to Nigeria. I know well that ladies buy human hair from vietnam.

Its just a suggestion. Take care.

chinese peeps? sounds you have an issue with chinese. is vietnam better than china or what? have you been to china?

are you nigrerian passport holder ? how is it going to vietnam ? still in vietnam at this point? they dont kick you out or you fail to buy a plane ticket home? you make a living out of teaching english ??

in my memory, vietnam was a piece of crap, things priced more than they worth, and ppl were mean and parochial, and worst was, their feeding was too small, i needed to take 3 bowls of noodles to make me full.

the whole shiethole vietnam is owned by chinese factory owners and all sorts of businessmen. they are more servile to chinese than nigerian to chinese, although they fvcking hilariously "look down on" chinese.

anyway, i do feel curious for you and your life in vietnam.

Ma'am, rest.

When you go through the thread, you'll find out why she used the phrase "Chinese peeps". She wasn't discriminating neither does she have anything against Chinese.
If you think Chinese don't look down on people also, you must be living in la-la land

i know you are great wherever you are. that is why i feel curious for you and your trip.

thx for enlarging my vocabulary, but i also asked lots of other questions, will you condescend to answer them too?

i , honestly , can not hold my contempt to vietnam, i need to be honest to myself, hope this will not affect our talks.

how can you survive eating those pitifully scanty rice noodles ? they leave you hungry again 1 hour later.

how is the attitude they hold towards african ?

On food......

There's rice and spaghetti and macaroni here. You can make stew
There's fish, beef, pork if you're a fan, chicken and turkey. There's even cow leg and goat head.
There's plantain
There's rice flour for semo or you can get semo and garri at the African shop. i eve heard there's fufu
There's Okro here
If you want othere soup, you should bring the ingredients from home
There's sweet and irish potatoe
There's cocoyam
There's bread

What else.......?

True their noodle soup leaves you hungry after one hour and that's why they mostly have it for breakfast followed by lunch at 11am. There are other dishes that hold you too. I've posted some on this thread. Don't want to repeat pictures

this is an example...fried noodles.

I hardly eat out though. I only do when I'm hanging out or craving some of their dishes that I love

On the way they treat Africans.....

I'll speak for myself.

I've seen nothing but love and curiosity except on few occassions which I'll talk about.

Up till now, people still want to take pictures with you in the market, still touch your hair, kids still surround you and chat endlessly mostly trying to show off what they just learnt....What's your name, where are you from, how do yoou spell your name? This is unit one and two lesson in their school lol.

I have this kid in my building that wherever he sees me even on the street, even if he just saw me 10 minutes ago, he lits up, eyes wide and screams TEACHER!

Yesterday, in a minimart, I actually had to twirl and sing Let it go, let it go...(Elsa from Frozen's song) because a 3 or 4 year old walked up to me with her singing toy and kept gesturing for me to do what she was doing. She smiled and left me alone after I did.

People will randomly say hello to you or nod and smile and if they are with kids, will actually stop and ask them to say hello to you.

The times I've hrd not so good experience was either a vietnamese replying your email or a recommendation plainly saying they don't want black skin people.

There are also times when you're actually get to class especially kindergaten and 1 or 2 will be scared of you. By the next day they are your friend sha

During the second wave of the pandemic, I was at a traffic light on my bike and the truck nect to me with 3 occupants put on their mask and roulled up their window. On two or three occassions, no one wanted to enter the elevator with me. (I don't experience this again though)

2 days ago, I just left a friend's apartment and stepped out of the elevator when about 3 7 or 8 year olds started covering their nose muttering corona and dodging me. So I mad it a point of duty to follow them round while they kept dodging. We die here angry angry angry I wanted to even purposely sneeze or touch them and make them freak out more but then I remember say no be Naija I dey and an elderly woman was coming. She was the one that cautioned them.

On the bright side, The treatment is great cos asides the ones listed above, I haven't had any other challenges. Today in class, an 8 year old just walked up to the teachers desk and gave me her candy and a heart sign. (You'll have kids give you the heart sign if they like you here) Another kid collected the candy on my way to my next class while giving high fives on the stairs undecided undecided

I forgot to mention...you'll get stares sometimes when you enter a local resturant to eat and some giggles. You'll giggle and stare too if you see a westerner eating amala in a bukka

Lol. How do you change the toppings of a noodle soup It's just like you asking them to change the "toppings" in fried rice or pizza. Best they can do is remove it

That's why when it comes to Bun for example, there's Bun Ca, Bun Cha, Bun Nem, etc

3 days? Not enuogh time to judge if you ask me

my response depends on the time your twice weekly evening classes are.

You're in a place to hustle, you stated you'd like improve your earnings so I'd go with the 1st offer..

if it were me though, I'd go with the 2nd offer, secondary school kids will be better for me than kindergarten.

The third offer seems like much work that can disturb your other classes.

in other news, wow you sabi cook oo, seems vietnam is not advisable to someone who can't cook..
