Hi people, I just graduated with a 2.2 in one of the sciences. (CGPA 3.3). I admit that was due to my carelessness. Recently, I have this strong ambition to become a university lecturer and rise to the peak of my career.

Now, these are my concerns. What are the chances of getting a lecturing job (after I might have gotten my PhD) considering the 2.2 Bsc result? Or it
doesn't matter once there are higher qualifications?

Is it worthwhile to sit for JAMB again and start all afresh? I'm still in my mid twenties and the drive is high. I know I can do it, but is it necessary / worth it?

Dont let a piece of paper define you. I graduated with a 2.1 but fortunately, my company have never viewed my certificate,

I only focused on learning Coding back then in University and that is what is putting food on my table and allowing me work with some of the biggest Tech companies in the world and travel to various countries.

Focus on creating value and improving your skills.

If you want to become a lecturar, aim to be the best lecturar nigeria has ever had and you will realize that your 2.2 cannot even stop you.

Your interest and passion is all that matters. It will take you through all you need to do, like a masters degree for a start.

Well, there are very tenable excuses but they don't even count. The thing is, I'm ready to start afresh, I just want to be sure it's the right thing to do (and the only way out). I actually know a lot of lecturers with 2.2 and even third class, it's just the stiff competition and current unemployment rate that is bothering me.
bro, let me advise you.
Don't kill yourself because you want to be a lecturer. I know of first class and 2.1 graduates that searched for that dream lecturing job, but all to no avail.
I myself grad with 2.1, searched for lecturing job left, right and center all to no avail. Getting a lecturing job in present day Nigeria depends on your connections and who you know in that university, not by your B.Sc. grade.

Go for a Masters and then a PhD. If possible, do these in the same university and while at it, be helping the profs write papers and do one or two research runs for them. They will put in a word for you at the end to get hired.

It is possible if you get an M.Sc degree with a PhD grade. You qualify to be an Asst. Lecturer and if u get a PhD you qualify for Lecturer II and from there the sky is your limit with good publications and over time you become a Professor.

Just get a master's degree. Most universities will accept that CGPA for a master's admission. UNN where I completed mine, does. Upon completion, you are qualified for an assistant lecturer position in almost any university in the country.

In my opinion, not worth it at all. Just so you too can be frustrated and go on indefinite strikes? Rather than spend more on school fees and exams, use your mid-twenties drive to be more productive for yourself and others. I don't know how, but if I were in your shoes, I'd just take my 2.2 and move on.

Unless you really really really love teaching people.

you dont need to start afresh, you can just go for PGD Then MASTERS. With that you can become an assistant lecturer (also moving close to lecturer will help you achieve faster). Wishing the best of GOD (or deity you believe)

Once you have a master's degree, your Bsc does not really count, except if the lecturing job you are applying for is highly competitive.

If there are a lot of applicants for a certain job, recruiters may use Bsc degrees (or even WAEC results) to reduce the number.

First of all, your course of study matters. If it is a course that is saturated in many universities, I will advise that you go for a master's degree in a related but minor course.

For example, if you have a Bsc in Political Science, just know that you will always have many applicants applying for jobs in that department. So, your 2'2 may be your only obstacle, as people with first class and 2'1 will be considered first before you. So, you could just master in anthropology instead.

He doesn't need any PGD. He will be admitted for masters. The op is okay

My classmate had about 7 carryovers in his 1st semester in Unilag. He wasn't serious back then. He's now a lecturer in South Africa and married to one of their whites.

Based on the above, it can be achieved!!! grin grin grin

you want to start afresh? Instead of starting afresh, go for masters . But enquire from your lecturers and past PGD students if one can be employed with such grade. Look before you leap.

Bro, any qualification you get surpasses the previous one.
A PhD holder is not recognized by his masters neither a Prof recognized by his PhD degree.

Go and further in your Masters then you are good to go.

Earning a Second Class Lower (2.2) should not stop your dream. The only problem here is the choice of postgraduate course and school.
Some universities/faculties admit 2.2 for M.Sc (both state and federal). E.g Great University of Benin. All you need do is to browse courses and requirements and once you are serious with such a programme by earning a Ph.D grade (70%) of the units, you qualifies for a Doctorate (PhD) course of becoming a great lecturer anywhere in the world.
Should you earn less just like this your B.Sc programme, you have to under go an M.Phil (a repeat of earlier M.Sc units) in order to qualify for a Doctorate(PhD).

Such is the journey of becoming a great scholar and academic.
