Thanks so much
Vanzcharles:

5.0 point system is a grading system where the university grades you based on a five point scale.
The best your A can give you is a five point mark.
You have A,B C,D,E,F which translates to 5,4,3,2,1, 0 .Zero is not regarded as a point. So you have 5 grade points.

A 4.0 grade system is a grading system where the university grades you based on a for point scale. The best your A gives you is a four point mark.
You have A,B,C,D,F which translates to 4,3,2,1,0.
Zero is not regarded. You can notice the absence of E. You can see the pass mark is being peddled at D that's 45 in real sense.
4.5~5.0 translates to First class in a 5.0
3.0 ~4.0 translates to first class in a 4.0

Travel out of the country for your Masters and PhD. Try USA or Canada. You can get Assistantship in those countries. Don't near UK if you are not from rich home. You will return home with PhD in less than 5years

Hi people, I just graduated with a 2.2 in one of the sciences. (CGPA 3.3). I admit that was due to my carelessness. Recently, I have this strong ambition to become a university lecturer and rise to the peak of my career.

Now, these are my concerns. What are the chances of getting a lecturing job (after I might have gotten my PhD) considering the 2.2 Bsc result? Or it
doesn't matter once there are higher qualifications?

Is it worthwhile to sit for JAMB again and start all afresh? I'm still in my mid twenties and the drive is high. I know I can do it, but is it necessary / worth it?

Make sure your masters or PhD is from a school abroad. If you can get this, you are good to go. If not, you might struggle a bit.

Well, there are very tenable excuses but they don't even count. The thing is, I'm ready to start afresh, I just want to be sure it's the right thing to do (and the only way out). I actually know a lot of lecturers with 2.2 and even third class, it's just the stiff competition and current unemployment rate that is bothering me.

With the way Nigeria is going, please don't even think of lecturing in Nigeria. If you are so passionate about it, please look for a legit means to leave the country and go and lecture overseas. Lecturing in Nigeria is not worth it.

There are dozens of things out there that can fetch you real money. But if you are so passionate about lecturing, please don't do it in this country.

With your 2:2, start a master in the same field as your first degree.

Then make sure you graduate with a PHD grade in your masters, with your masters you can be admitted in some schools as a graduate assistant or a lecturer in a polytechnic.

With your PHD grade in masters , start a PHD program in the same course field. While you are a Doctor in view, you can lecture anywhere.

I wish you God's favor

Do Masters, and then PHD

For you to get into PHD you have to get distinction or merit in MSc and lastly write papers or do enough research and write papers.

After all that one school might employ u as assistant/ grad lecturer.

Some schools required PGD for graduates with 2.2 oga

He said he graduated with 3.3. Even unilag will not require PGD for 3.3. PGD is usually for those with less than 3.0 CGPA. Get your facts right.

It does not matter once you have higher qualifications, in fact, if you have lower class at undergraduate but persevere to have PhD and continue to be producing high quality research article, published in reputable international journals such Elsevier, springer, nature, science, etc, you will simply be the talk of town, people will be using you as good example of determine person and you will become a mentor to many students and others.
Even if you have 3rd class, you can still be a lecturer provided you continue with PGD and MSc then you could be employed as a lecturer.
actually it does, things changed during goodluck era, you need a minimum of 2.1 to become a lecturer

One of my lecturer in school back then is a third class holder, today she is a Prof. and HOD of the department.

To be a lecture you must have your masters.

alternatively you can apply as assistant lecturer from there you will further to obtain your masters.

.note you must obtain your master before you can start lecturing in class.
He cannot apply as Assistant Lecturer (AL) with a BSc. AL is a rank after Graduate Assistant (GA). BSc (first class or 2:1) can enter as a GA while professional courses or masters without experience enter as AL. From AL you proceed to Lecturer 2, then Lecturer 1, to Senior Lecturer, Associate prof/reader, and finally to prof.

Most posters don't know what they're talking about. It depends on the university, and when (what year) you apply.
Some universities (like mine) are returning to a minimum of 2.1 for lecturing jobs. Wouldn't matter if the candidate had higher degrees.
Posters mentioning (former) lecturers who graduated with 2.2 or 3 degrees should note that this is just reflective of the rot that has overtaken the system due to anemic funding. 2.1. is generally the minimum requirement for lecturing gigs, and with the NUC increasingly tightening standards, this minimum is likely to become applicable nationwide in the near future.

Is it worthwhile to sit for JAMB again and start all afresh? I'm still in my mid twenties and the drive is high. I know I can do it, but is it necessary / worth it?
Probably not. If you're dead set that this is what you want, find a university that accepts 2.2. But be warned: you will find yourself competing with 1 and 2.1. students. I've been involved in multiple Selection interviews for my department, and we've always had so many 2.1's that we rarely shortlisted 2.2s even when the university allowed them to apply.

Good luck.

Not possible with a third class degree.
Do your PGD and subsequently, your master and all your sins will be forgiven! Of course, you may need to demonstrate the ability to do research by presenting some publications!

How much do they charge for publication?
Actually, it depends on where you're publishing and the quality of your work.
For Nigerian journals, most of them accept low quality articles and they hardly do the required peer review, hence they will accept and publish whatever trash you send to them! But you may need to cough out between 20k to 40k naira per article. I will also advice you to patronize only University based journals or a known Society based journals, such as The Mathematical Society of Nigeria.
If your article could scale the rigorous peer review of the international journals such as Elsevier, springer, etc, you may actually choose to publish your article as non-open-access and hence you do not pay for the publication yourself, but the readers of your article will have to pay. If you want to pay then make sure you have up to a million naira in your account grin
Nigerian journals will receive and publish your article within two months while the Elsevier, springer, etc will receive your article get the editor to approve it (like, one month), then send it for peer review (like three to six months) when it comes back from peer review, it may be rejected cheesy If not rejected, you may have one hell of corrections to make, but if you eventually get published, I am assuring you, you will celebrate it cool

Don't waste your time and resources on MSc and PhD unless you're able to get employed as GA or any other position in the university despite your grade.

Postgraduate degrees are expensive and there's no guarantee that you'll be employed as lecturer even after PhD. It costs a lot of money to conduct research and to publish it! Where would you be getting all the dollars to buy reagents and to publish in international journals
As far as I'm concerned, MSc and PhD should be undertaken only by those who already have jobs or those who can readily get scholarship awards. Considering your grade, it'll be difficult for you to get scholarship.

It'll even be better for you to apply for direct entry to a course you can readily apply to earn money after graduation.
