Lami1996:

Baba na lie u dey lie,I did my nysc in 3 division Nigerian army Jos and I just passed out in July. Throughout my one year,I was rolling with 2ndLts and Lts mostly cos there are very free with corpers. I have never seen a MWO pass by a 2ndLt and dare not give him a compliment and as a matter of fact I've witnessed a 2ndLt lock a staff sergent and a sergent in the WO/Sergents Mess,a WO will simply respect himself and pay the 2ndLt his compliment so that he can be respected by the 2ndLt too. Don't say what you don't know and be lying to us here. No wonder military people call civilians "clowns" lol
Okay, like I've said I was formerly in the system. Kindly talk weytin you see as otondo for jos , you be corper.

Make I talk my own for bori camp.
2nd lieutenant wey just enter bush yesterday dey find compliment from WO lol if he give you fine, if he doesn't, just go in peace. The one i tell you chop slap happen for my face so no be matter of hearsay. And guess what? After huffing and puffing from the 2nd lieutenant, nothing happened..

Like someone said, those WO aren't ordinary, they have direct links to the top dogs and are usually loved by everyone. They are very old and full of wisdom, very delicate. Infact in the war front, commisoned officers meet them for advice and tactics. You go depot few months con dey find mandatory compliment from person wey don spend 25 yrs plus for service even before they born you ? Why? Because you carry one star? God punish you.. go meet those privates and Lance coporals, dem go give you tire.

If he gives you fine, if he doesn't, don't make the mistake of buying him a job coz na you go regret in the long run.

Shinfaks:
And a general advice to all of us, how you treat your subordinates will determine the quality of your stay in any service.

If you are a good officer you will get all the compliments you deserve, when you have to fight for it it simply means something is wrong about YOU!

Lets leave the senior NCOs alone sef, even the junior officers can put you in trouble I can assure you.

A band officer was telling us one night how one should be careful how he lead ratings and the ways they can mess you up, he sited example with the coming POP that imagine as the CNS is entering the parade ground, and he did like this *demonstrates* and no sound.
He said "I will just pack my kaya"
If you dey find all these mandatory compliments , you won't go far. Like I've said, if those old timers give it to you , fine and if they don't, just move on. But still try to earn your respect and there are many ways to do that. It's not by being strict or looking for compliments alone. Infact if you're below the rank of a Colonel and you dey form strict on your surbordinates, Oyo na your case .. you go frustrate. Those NCOs can mess you up big time . Sometimes you have to pamper them because hen they start grumbling , nagging , squeezing face and keeping malice because of your attitude then problem don dey pile up for you be that.

I for one don't want to command respect by virtue of the rank on my shoulder or chest but by virtue of my accomplishments.
I have conversed or heard about military men who fought alongside Col. Abu Ali in the theatre of war and they were all full of praises of his bravery and accommodating nature.

See the life of Col. Abu Ali should be a case study to every aspiring officer. How did he manage to command enormous respect from his surbodinates, was it as a result of his seniority or bravery?
When we eventually get to North East or West, one thing I definitely know is the manner in which we subdue our enemies with minimal casualties is what will earn us our deserved respect.
Our concern is how to make ourselves relevant first, read about how past military commanders succeeded, restrategize, pray and hope your approach brings results, that way we wouldn't end up becoming laughing stock of the NCO's.

An incidence so happened that the Amoured Personnel Carrier of a senior officer to late Col. Abu Ali ran out of fuel in the territory of the insurgents in the night and after communicating with his command, he was told fuel would arrive in the morning because it wasn't ideal to endanger more personnel in an attempt to supply fuel.

The officer had already given up when Late Col. Abu Ali volunteered to supply the fuel, other soldiers seeing it was Col. Abu Ali also joined the team on seeing the rescue team the senior officer made a comment I won't mention here for religious purpose.

On another occasion, an officers car caught fire in the officers quarters in Bauchi if am not mistaken and all the soldiers looked away because of the officers bad relationship with the soldiers only for Late Col. Abu Ali to come to the rescue with a fire extinguisher.

I swear by Allah who created me, it is most likely for @sikowitz 17 to fight cut and join Lt's (SSC DSSC) had it been he happens to be a MWO/RSM with 30 years of military experience.

See it's very bad for a NCO not to pay you complements as at when due but then work to earn such respect.

As SSC and DSSC officers the tides are already against us from regular combatants for command position, from regular combatants during promotion and convertion exams and least the always ever present erratic godfathered NCOs.

Note: it will always be in record that a NCO wawad you as an officer just in an attempt to demand a deserved compliment. People would always use you as a point of reference no matter what happens to the NCO him don slap or shoot you.

As we get our commission inshaAllah let's tread carefully.

Victory is from God alone.

Guy, I wasn't cracking any joke, I met RSM Ajodo, WO Tumba and a host of others. The registrar as at then was Col. Ayamasowei if am not mistaken and the board secretary was a Lt Col. whose name I can't remember. I was there and heard from the horses mouth.
Now ask yourself no be the same North East Col. Abu Ali of late memory command respect and Na the same North East one yeye NCO sent his commander to his early grave this year for not signing his pass.
For your mind now, NCO no fit slap Lt but him fit send am go heaven. Think am now. What has happened to the said soldier who shot his commander? I need answers please.
Note, we are not saying it's right for an NCO to disrespect his senior but damn it shit happens everywhere.
I didn't say you were cracking joke, what I meant was that Ajodo was the one cracking jokes just to entertain the candidates. Col.Ayamasowei was a Brig. Gen as at then bro. The board chairman was Rear Admiral Ezeoba. I know what am saying bro because I was at the interview as well. You've allowed me to bring myself out grin grin

These issues are being over flogged.
But I'm positive all of this is for the sake of having a conversation.

Let's not concentrate on trivialities like complement and who can issue order to who. It's not that deep o.

Wait good evening guys , please I just need some clarification. Those soldiers that carry V and double V did they join as SSC or RRI?

Also what rank do you start with as SSC?

Is joining via RRI a bad choice.

Is there really a difference between SSC and NDA guys (RC)

Lastly I have an uncle who is a staff sergeant but educated. He has a degree before he joined. The man is in his late 50s now but still a staff sergeant despite his degree. What could have gone wrong?

Thanks for your responses . God bless.

1..those soldiers that carry one v and 2 are lance corporals and corporals.. they entered via the regular recruit intake(RRI)
2... when you commission as an SSC officer you are commissioned into the rank of a 2nd lieutenant (1 star)
3...there are a lot of differences between RCs and SSC officers.. read thread from beginning to understand
4...your uncle applied via RRI and not short service.. he joined as a recruit so his results won’t be tenderable anymore in service.. because any result not rendered as at the time of enlistment is useless going forward.. so if he by any chance wants to become an officer, he has to go to school again.

We underrate NCOs alot in this country. Many of them have masters degrees, just like someone said we can't all be officers, some joined the NCO cadre for various reasons. I know many people joined the lower cadre so that they would get sponsorship from the army to further their education. NCOs are the backbone of any military as they play a very important role, some are technicians, artisans etc that's why even under the RRi there are two categories of applicants, Tradesmen and Non-Tradesmen.
Even the army invest alot on these set of personnel some of them are sent abroad for courses to broaden their horizon and to enhance their productivity.

Gentlemen, while we await the army shortlist that is likely to be released within few days, it's important we rub minds on the very important issue, which is
Why do you want to join the Nigeria army?
No doubt this is one of the essay questions we are going to encounter in the exam and oral interview.
However, some of us here have little or no tangible reason/point why they want to join the prestigious army.
Therefore as Nairaland course mates, let's utilize this opportunity to share/enlighten us on some of the important and acceptable reasons why "you want to join the Nigeria army" and if possible develop the essay to at least a 500 words essay.
Let's make this a lesson and or fun exercise.

Such question ain't difficult at all, what u need to do first is tell them the meaning of military itself, tell them the force under the military and break it down and focus on nigeria army, tell tell them the department and if possible, u can talk about some of them under the nigeria army, after that you tell them a brief about your field of study, then relate it to how it can be of an advantage to the nigeria army bla bla. With all this, u ought to have written at least 1½ pages then pray to God.
Note this, there should always be a paragraph. Your first paragraph should be about the military and the force under it. Second paragraph should be about the Nigeria army and the department. Third paragraph should be about your field and how it can be of help to the army.
