There's truth to this, during the roman savage empire, Tigers and Lions are pitted against each other , and the tiger mostly always wins.

No, tigers are stronger but are not resilient unlike lions that can fight for hours.

An average fight time for tiger is 5 minutes.
I recently watch a documentary on Nat geo wild about animal fight club.

Tiger was 10th on the animals that fight longest while lion is 3rd and Chimpanzees are first.

An average male lion can spend 3 years fighting for his pride from different male lions.

While Chimpanzees fight their whole life.

Tiger is stronger but Lion can outlast a tiger in a fight because Tigers are not genetical build for longer fighting which is an advantage lions have over them.
