Apologies for this. Hopefully you will be rescheduled soon.
Great thanks for your esteemed concerns, Bro. Mine is still next month. smiley

This makes a complete sense.

sonofakin:
Let's assume total cost of studies is $40,000 and one gets an assistantship of $30,000. It means the deficit is 10k right? So when you request for your I-20 and submit your assistantship letter, you need to also submit a bank statement for the deficit. So on that right side, your assistantship amount shows as 30k, then maybe self or family support should only show that 10k deficit. It should not matter even if you submitted a bank statement of 200k. My point is that you I-20 isn't showing your actual deficit, you will be relying on the VO to do the maths or you should be prepared to explain. I don't know if you understand my point
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by hakeemta: 1:52pm On Oct 20, 2020
It is actually nothing to be worried about. It is a national issue. We should be more concerned about how things should work out good than being worried about visa appointments.

The whole protest is about the problems of poor system of which one is also part of the reasons, if not major, we are all running to school outside the country.

Let us remain calm. All the best to us.

Hi everyone.

Please I need clarification on something and I’ll appreciate if someone can help.

My school emailed my I-20 and asked me to print it in colored to show their signature in blue and I should also sign in blue.

I emailed them to ask if I can go ahead and pay the shipping fee so they can send the original (as I’ll still need original at the port of entry) but they said the one they sent should serve for both visa and traveling, that they are not mailing any I-20s.

Please does anyone have this issue or know about this? Can that document serve for both visa and travel?.

Thank you.

My interview was on the 9th of October. I was denied visa. I will share the transcript below.

VO: Good morning
Me : Good morning sir
Vo: Where in the US? (or why the US like my mind is telling me may be I didn't hear him well)
Me: University of Missouri

VO: why Master's in Metallurgical Engineering?
Me: Because I want to specialise in foundry technology and steel making.

VO: have you traveled outside the country before?
Me: no, I have not had any reason to travel outside the country.
VO: who is sponsoring your study?
Me: I have a graduate research Assistantship. I will be working with Dr. Sey gig on a research, the x of y. Hence, the department is fully funding my study.
VO: I can see 50% Graduate Assistantship here. That's strange. I have not seen such before.
Me: (I tried to explain) the 50% is just saying I have 50% full time employment. Also from the I-20, there is no deficit there.

Vo: are you married?
Me: no, I'm single
Vo: any child?
Me: no child.

VO: sorry I will not be approving your visa. This yellow paper will explain why.

Please, what do you think could be the reason?
I have mailed my school and they have updated my I-20, removing the 50% there. (that's actually how the school write full funding for students, I confirmed from others). Secondly, do I need to get a letter from the school to explain why they updated my I-20?

Also, is the reason on the yellow paper same for everybody, is it generic?

Thank you.

The answer you gave which I highlighted boldly was unnecessary.
Also, your 50% graduate assistantship stated on your i20 was really strange. Hence the reason for the denial.

It's not the answer that gave you away bro.. It's the 50% GA without Deficit.. That's what the V. O finds strange.. If you were given a 100% GA then deficit is not needed.. But 50% .. Man without GA will be tough.. Let your school fix it if possible send a letter am sure you will get it next time.

Use your current passport since it's still valid for 2 years, you'd renew your passport in US

Thanks for your reply ma'am.

as far as there's 6 months validity period after your Visa application, then there's no problem.

Meaning if your passport would expire expire in February next year, you can still use it.

Thanks a lot sir.

Do they request for your GRA letter? I thought it's not needed since your funding is already stated in your I-20

Just to be on the safer side.

Most(if not all) schools prepare an employment letter (the GRA offer letter) and send to the student.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by sonofakin: 4:16pm On Oct 20, 2020
It was actually the answer he gave plus the fact that the VO wasn't enlightened enough. 50% GA in his case means half-time assistantship which is equivalent to 20 hours per week. Some schools have it that way. I blame the school for assuming everyone will understand the ambiguous term

I don't think it's the answer but the funding information on the I-20.

It was an unexpected question so it would have taken a lot of convincing, the VO is already prejudiced and you will need him/her to be willing to listen (which doesn't happen frequently). In my case, I would have said "it means i will be dedicating half (50%) of my time to the assistantship which is 20 hours per week". I will say this b4 stating that the funding covers all my expenses.
N:B- when I said it wasnt the right answer, I didn't mean it was your fault. I totally blame the school. I blame the school because it is an ambiguous term. I also got a 50% assistantship in a school, whereas, in my case, it wasn't full funding, I had deficit, the funding would have covered my tuition and paid half of what a fully funded student would earn. VOs too think they know everything.
Also, I think you should work on the response you gave for "Why a master's in met. Engineering.
We are all in this together. Sorry about the situation. I remember you saying your resumption is oct 12 and assumed you had left

It's good they are rescheduling, many are stuck outside Lagos with the curfew and cancellation of flights. Travelling by road isn't an option for some with the violent activities in many cities.

Hello, I have an emergency appointment for Monday and due to the ongoing pandemonium, I'm scared the consulate might remain shut. There has also been difficulty in my sponsor getting his statement of account from the bank, as a result of the protest also. My question is can I book an appointment as the first week of December is available just in case my emergency appointment is not possible or if I don't get my financial documents ready by then and will this affect me in any way? Please I need you guys input. Thanks

I think you should pick the date in December. I don’t see this ending this week and they might not work on Monday

I think there is no cause to worry whether your Monday appointment will canceled or not. If ever the appointment is canceled, you will still be rescheduled when the embassy resumes duty. That was stated in the cancelation mail that was sent.

A friend' visa was approved in Abuja embassy today. He was able to get the emergency booking because he is one of the EducationUSA students and they have been prioritized. Find below his paraphrased transcript(may not be exact):

VO: Pass ur docs
Him: Passed
VO: Have you been to the US before?
Him: No
Vo: Have you travelled outside the country before?
Him: No
Vo: Why did you choose this school?
Him: *Mentioned things about the research he will be doing
Vo: who is paying for your studies?
Him: I have a full ride that covers tuition and living expenses
Vo: How long will your program take?
Him: 5 years
Vo: Are you sure 5 years is enough for this program?
Him: Yes
Vo: I will be approving your visa...blah blah blah

Seems the EducationUSA people already mentioned that those guys are the best in their schools with first class and all...and that explains why the interview was more of "gisting". Now i feel sad for not joining

If you know any first class graduates willing to study in the USA, tell them to enrol in the EducationUSA...

All the best everyone

Guys while we wait for this precarious situation to pass away, I want to ask a question:
A friend of mine in the USA wants to give me his account statment from Bank of American and sponsorship letter. First , will this fly? Secondly, will the fact that I know someone in the USA not work against my tie to home which I have claimed.
I have wife and 3 kids which apparently worked against me in the last interview cos apparently the VO thought they will not be good in my absence money wise.
My elder brother will be making up the deficit in my funding. But on a second thought, I want my friend to make up the deficit while my elder brother takes care of my family should they need further hand; though my wife is an entrprneur but the business is relativly new and without much money in the account because of stock still being expected from China and elsewhere due to the pandemic.
