please I need advice from all parents and Educators and parents on Nairanland. today I just realized my 3years old son cant even read Letters A to F talk less of A to Z but can read Figure 1 to 10, I am seriously worried.

I don't stay at home except for weekends as I am working outside my state, but due to the curfew I find my way back home yesterday so I was able to discover this problem in the early hours of today.

I know the mother is trying cos I have seen different live videos where she was teaching him and working on his assignment, most times I pity the boy so much because of the beating from his mum alone makes me sick but I can't really complain since I know is for his own good and I know how stressful it is for a mother with 2 kids to manage her time and all that....

I called his teacher immediately and she told me my son will be going to Nursery class when the present term is over due to his age, sadly she didn't say things I expect to hear from her so I told her I will visit the school once the curfew is over, I need explanation, is private school that bad these days ? my son can't even write 2 and 3
I have bought Video CD, bought many play book materials containing letters and figures displayed boldly, I bought counting and so on when he was 2 years so i expect a better result by now.

pls sir and ma, I need help on how to guide this boy to learn better, what should I do and how should I go about it.

Note: any time I am home, I always go through his books, assignments and read his school rhymes for him.

That is too bad of the 3year old boy.

The 3year old boy should have known how to write formal and informal letters by now.
He should have been so perfect in tenses, syntax and stresses.
Finally, the boy should by now be able to apply formulae in relativity.

Only if you as the father was able to do those while you were like the poor son.

3 years that still suppose to be sucking breast nawa for you ooo.

My advice: resign from work so as to concentrate on the boy by the time you and your low IQ wife beat the hell out of the poor child you will buried the remain

Different teachers with different teaching skills. Children especially age 1- 5 are attracted to colours, flashy things etc. You can assist your child by making letters (a-z) using different coloured cardboards. Or try the following methods.

1--- stroke down
2--- around and dash
3--- around and around
4--- stroke down, dash and down again.
5---- stroke down, around and a dash ontop
6 --- make a curve and go in
7 --- across the sky and down from heaven.

Lemme stop here...my pot is on fire...lol.

N:B It takes a lot of patience to teach a child...And please tell your wife to stop beating your child beating a child is not always the best...it will only make the child scared of even trying. Learning is meant to be fun.

My 3 year old daughter can neither read no write...but she is hyper smart. She can sing and she can dance and she can jump and she can laugh and she can cry and can piss in her diaper....just like any 3 year old should.

Madame nothing is wrong with your child. Let her enjoy her childhood.

Pls calm down at that age he is still picking up but on a slow speed

I suggest you engage his class teacher on a private lesson where you pay his teacher, I bet you she will pay special attention on him through out his first nursery class

It's OK to be worried but you and your wife are doing too much.
Kids pick things at their own pace, give them time and watch them grow.
It's not OK to beat a 3year old because he can't read or write, Change your method.

OP, he's still ok. My son didn't start till around 4, now he's almost smarter than me . Read books to him, have him watch educational tv shows, download educational apps for him. He will be fine

Easy on the poor boy. He's only 3. Except it's a case of speech delay ( which can also be corrected with the appropriate teaching strategies) he would definitely come around. I am currently taking a 3 yr old child whose mum was worried that he he's not constructing tenses yet but to the Glory of God he's come around and the mum is happy.
Employ a professional early years practitioner.

Please stop beating the poor child. My boy started identifying and writing all letters at 4. It was very surprising. I personally told the teacher not to rush him when I discovered he's a slow learner.

He's five now and he reads and does his homework without my input. I just check to see his errors.

But, you have work to do oga.
Download lots of educational videos on alphabets and numbers. It works like magic! There are lots of them online. Then, ensure you watch them with him and see how he's doing.

You can pause the video and ask him to identify a letter or number. Don't force him please. He might get tired, let him rest.

Never use force on a child to learn, you won't get the needed result most of the time. Children aren't built the same.

My 2 year old baby will learn fast because it's all over her. She holds pen and scribble without any help! I knew what I went through before my first child could hold a pen.

I hope you get it now? Children learn differently.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your son. He is still a toddler and at this stage they are developing and absorbing everything they hear or see. Sometimes they repeat whatever you say.

At this stage your son is just able to sound letters through songs and learn rhymes, identify colours and shapes, development of their pincer grip( finger muscles)using coloured pencils or wax crayons. At this stage they are able to communicate in their own words and also scribble not write.

All kids are not the same ,some are slow learner's while some are fast learners , some kids have interest In pictures(visual characters), songs , puzzles, activities that develop their cognitive learning.

Pls stop the beatings, encourage him and introduce Intresting activity toys to him, you can also try to find out their learning procedure at his school to be sure of what he is being taught.

He wil turn out amazing and intelligent. Pls be patient.

My kids don't start school until they are exactly 2yrs depending on their birth months even if they will exceed 2yrs I wunt mind ,what matters is their activeness and maturity in learning.

There are so many things to consider first, which may likely be the cause.

Firstly, is it a Montessori School? If it is, then don't expect him to start writing any time soon cos their curriculum doesn't teach children to write until they are about four or five years old.
What they use are mainly brail-like materials made with grains and sand which they can use to touch and feel numbers and letters.

Secondly, he may not be able to identify or read letter names like ABC because they may be teaching them phonics which deals with only sounds. So he gets confused when he sees capital letters and hears a different thing from the mum. While he's expecting to hear "ah" the mum says "A" so he'll just keep mute altogether. Meanwhile in class he maybe responsive and doing well, reason the teacher didn't complain or say anything to you in that regards when you called.

As as an educator, I'll advise parents to try and understand the lessons taught. To also learn the methods and styles used in teaching this children to better assist them at home with their homework and lessons.

Try and ask the teacher what they are learning for now and if they are using Montessori curriculum.

So the op has every right to be worried if the school is using British curriculum which does all this at that stage except if it's an American or Montessori curriculum.

What kind of British curriculum are you talking about? Formal education in GB begins at age 5.

At age 3 a child is unable to think in abstract terms. Even if you drill the child to identify letters and numbers, he will not understand the concept behind them so take it easy. At this age teaching should be play-based and you should take advantage of the child's natural curiosity to discover the world around him.

Teach him about flowers, trees, animals, colors, food, cars, weather, the sun, the moon, the stars, anything that arouses his curiosity. Encourage the child to ask questions.

Make sure the child gets to move a lot and also focus on the development of fine motor skills meaning that you should help the child use his hands by making him play with dough or help you cook or do gardening. Get him construction games (building blocks) and help him hold pencils appropriately (something that is often neglected). Pay attention to how he eats and brushes his teeth and encourage him to do better.

You can train his cognitive skills by making him recite numbers till 10 or 20 but literacy should be focused on his oral skills (pronunciation, speaking in full sentences) and his receptive abilities (listening). Reading books to children is very beneficial. Make a habit of it by reading bedtime stories. There will come a time (usually around the age of 4) when he will ask about letters and will want to write his name all by himself. This is where the power of intrinsic motivation kicks in and the time to teach him how to write the first words. Don't rush it.

Train his memory by teaching him short poems for children, rhymes and songs. Children love it.

Do not underestimate the potential of fine arts in the early development. It also helps develop fine motor skills and creativity which will lay the foundation for problem solving skills.

Don't beat the child. Children love to learn. Beatings will make him hate it. Don't destroy the eagerness in him by doing what is not age appropriate. Use his natural curiosity to make learning fun.
