What is your definition of "the poorest"? If US$4k is among the poorest, people like you must eat dirt surviving with only US$2k, and that's before pandemic. Nigeria's economy is projected to contract by about 4 percent in 2020, with severe challenges to regaining growth momentum in 2021-2022. There is no way Nigeria's per capita income would surpass US$1.5k in the next three years.

Stop making other people laugh by comparing any Asian countries to Nigeria.
So Asian countries like Nepal, Cambodia, Tajikistan, Yemen, Myanmar etc cannot be compared to Nigeria because they are richer? Eya, I see you are the typical stubborn Nigerian youth with more ego than facts. Imagine saying all Asian countries richer than Nigeria on a public forum? See who is laughing? And you said a Nigerian should eat dirt because per capita is $2k? Do you know what an average is? Is Dangote a Nigerian on $2k? See who is bragging and yet fail to understand an average like per capita?
Anyway you not worth my time goodbye

Point of correction as follows:
1. Wikipedia is not an accepted source of information in any study whether academic or commerce. As far back as Masters study level you should have been told that. Mention of Wikipedia shows that you have no idea about what Wikipedia is. Next time for authoritative sources of information cite IMF, World Bank as you did earlier albeit in wrong context, World Economic Forum, EIU, WTO, etc.
2. A per capita of 4k USD is still a very poor country stop running on emotions and listen especially to anything you haven't heard before. Even miserably poor Nigeria can do 2k USD per capita so that should tell you 4k isn't a big deal. Monaco does 185k USD, Liechtenstein does 174k USD, Germany 46k and you are correcting someone with claim that Indonesia is not a poor country?
3. Your data on South Africa is wrong on all the points you raised - its per capita is 6k and not 4k. Secondly is not the wealthiest country in Africa, is not even in the first 3 or 4. See don't assume it's only youths that visit nairaland some of your lecturers are here, so don't say what you don't know. In your response lookup countries like Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Seychelles etc before running your mouth again about SA being the wealthiest country in Africa
In terms of real wealth SA is the wealthiest

Wealth per capita Mauritius is the wealthiest

GDP is not real measure of wealth but what a country produce in a particular year

Or we can use HDI to better determine how far a country's human development has improved

China: 0.758 (high human development)
Indonesia: 0.707 (high human development)
India: 0.647 (medium human development)
Bangladesh: 0.614 (medium human development)

South Africa: 0.705 (high human development)
Nigeria: 0.534 (low human development)
Ethiopia: 0.470 (low human development)
DRC: 0.459 (low human development)

Comparing the asian's giants to african's in terms of overall development would make us a laughing stock for many. To think that there is a clueless person calling an asian country one of the poorest in the world without trying to elaborate his opinion is indeed an evidence of our failed education system. Heck, even Bangladesh has much higher point of HDI than ours.

Yes Mauritius is currently the wealthiest in 2020, GDP is the main metric for measuring wealth but there are other measures like the HDI which also matters, but you see the argument for GDP is that you can't continue to sustain a high GDP and remain poor so pls don't belittle a widely accepted measure. And on the HDI scale Mauritius still ranks far higher than SA, but in aggregate wealth SA is clearly up there. You see the context to this argument is even the only concern I have, and that's to clear this wrong pervasive notion that Nigeria is a rich country, it's the mindset of those stealing from poor Nigeria and we should correct it, that's my only interest

The reason of why our country failed to develop is because we love comparing ourselves with tiny nations with different scale of issues.

Many larger countries fare better than us, but we are not comfortable to admit it and tend to belittle their success.

We failed to see how poor we are, but dare to say other successful countries "poorest" out of our incompentency to acknowledge the actual fact.

GDP is mainly what a country produce, it's all production not actual wealth.

Yes Nigeria is not

There are two indians stock exchanges there, totalling US$ 4 trillion, larger than the whole GDP of Africa combined.
