2Face Blasts Nigerian Government Over Proposed Regulation Of Social Media (Video) Nigerian singer, 2Face has blasted the Nigerian government over the proposed regulation of social media, IgbereTV reports. Speaking in a video he shared on Instagram, the singer said; if the Nigerian government was responsible, they you would have blocked foreign social media apps and safeguarded apps developed by Nigerians. According to 2Face, that is the "true regulation". He also pointed out that there are many tech gurus in Nigeria who stopped pushing because they couldn't compete with foreign apps. 2Face noted that the country would have been the best place for indigenous apps to thrive because of the huge market. https://www.instagram.com/p/CG-9p0KpIui/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Watch the video below; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nADHISIsvnk 7 Likes 1 Share

From time memorial, many media people like to believe that they are the pillar of the society that holds the government responsible. However, if they want to do the check and balance on the government, who was it that kept them in turn, check and balanced, for their own action? Basically no one. News outlet only answers to the demand of the consumers and their own political aspirations, which is why there were and still are so much widespread use of sensational reporting and falsified information for perhaps as early as the invention of the writing system itself. Pen is indeed mightier than the sword. You can literally murder not just one but an entire race of people with just a few lines of inciting report, yet there's a heavy restriction on weapon ownership but not media reporting, don't you think that kind of strange? While I agree that the government total control on media reports is potentially dystopic and may allow them to avoid their own responsibility. There's still something that the government can do that can put the media outlet in check without affecting too much of their reporting freedom. I personally prefer some form of content rating that helps people distinguished fact-based from opinion reports. Some major media outlets already have this in place, I would love to see the government involvement in giving a more detailed definition of what is fact and what is an opinion and enforcing the system on the national level. They could even go further to require news outlet to further classify their content based on source i.e. “verified sources”, “not verified sources” “official sources, etc. And introduce some heavy punishment to the none-compliance. There are more calls today for the regulation of social media but I personally don't think that is necessary (if even possible.) Social media by principle is a system of semi-professional reporting at best, everyone should already know not to take one seriously (if not backed by a licensed news outlet.) It is when the major news outlet starts to copy the social media style of semi-responsible reporting (or even outright referencing a social media source) that we started having a problem. 3 Likes 1 Share |

2baba. He's found his voice at last. Nice. Anyway, a ban or even regulation of the SM space will spell doom for any government in Nigeria, 1) The people are woke 2) It may spiral into another round of protests, such that the govt cannot handle. 3) It will be counterproductive to any gain the country has made in the path of democracy. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Actually he is right. Misleading headline. Nigerian government can help in improving indigenous tech companies. If Twitter, Facebook and the rest are banned, it will make indigenous tech companies and developers grow. They can provide their own app with less competitive from foreign companies Another issue is where to host the server to protect users data. I believe Nigerian should try to invest in server farms, it will help Nigerian companies store and protect their data at home. 4 Likes 1 Share |

They compromised and gagged all the media houses that were very vocal before this govt came, now they've seen that the SM provides an alternative platform to Nigerians to expose their evil needs and they want it gagged too, they forget that this govt used the same social media as a tool to cone to power in 2015 Your home is incomplete without good quality furniture thats why we are here for you 1 Like |

It's a good thing he blasted the government, but saying government should block foreign social media apps, is a foolish thing to say, the world is a global village. We are not like north Korea that are isolated from the rest of the western world. No need trying to regulate social media because the truth is you can't. U can only Try to punish fake news peddlers, but that would mean you start with the Nigerian army because they lied back to back on their official Twitter page that they were never at the lekki toll gate only to later lie again that they were their but never shot anybody. After punishing them, then you move over to Lagos State governor for posting on his official page that forces beyond his control were responsible for the lekki shooting only for the army to recently say he was the one that invited them. You see the government is not interested in curtailing fake news as long as they are the ones spreading it, they only want to shut the masses up, 600 years of suffering for all corrupt politicians. 14 Likes |

Make this 2-faced traitor go siddon. We're talking about good governance and safety, not wack music.. Government should not only regulate social media, but also impose the capital punishment on anyone guilty of peddling fake news(that results in serious injury, death, and/or destruction of property), hate speech, blasphemy and any offence capable of disrupting the peace of this great country. Nigeria is too fragile and anything capable of causing anarchy should be annihilated. May God bless Nigeria. |
