fof1: No one can say for sure where Ikwerres come from. But putting together their recent Oral history together and trying to arrive at a near rational conclusion as possible as to who Ikwerre and indeed all Igboid-Bini groups are. The below is what I arrived at. "A group of Bini people on their way to the place called Ikwerre today , suffered permanent brain damage and lost their Bini language and culture. Every single memory of it was wiped clean from their brain memory. This was unprecedented in history. When they arrived at Ikwerre land, they had no option but to borrow the Igbo language and culture of their Igbo neighbours. The magnanimous Igbo ancestors expedited this language transfer process by giving Igbo daughters as wives to these lost Bini people Over time, they used their Bini tongue to distort the Igbo language they borrowed to create a denatured language they call Ikwerre language and culture. However knowing they owe their total existence (culture and language) to Igbo neighbours, instigated a sense of inferiority complex in these Bini people, which grew over time to become the Igbophobia in Ikwerre land we have today. This is the genesis of cultural and language similarities between Ndiigbo and Ikwerres. Its been a story of magnanimous Igbo neighbours and lost Bini people who rather than show gratitude to Igbo neighbours for helping them have a language and a culture they could call their own, seeing as their Bini ancestors couldn't evolve one, decided to repay Igbos with eternal hate". 10 Likes 1 Share |

Just like you said, an Igbo man sees an Ikwerre man an Second class Igbo and you Ikweerians are stupid to identify with such? My guy wake up oh! Ogbeniomo:Have you seen a yoruba man force yorubaness of any kwara man before? Rather, because of the uniqueness of the yoruba race, and the beauty that comes with it, it's the Kwarans that identify as yorubas - and naturally they are one. You guys have very low self esteem - that's why everyone has to identify igbos for y'all to be at peace. Ikwerre people say they aren't igbos. Is it a must for them to say otherwise? 2 Likes |

Pecuman:Bros I read you. As Ikwerre man I know myself more than anybody knows me. We were erroneously considered to be Igbos in the colonial period. But in 1963 at the height of Igbos power in Nigeria and particularly in Eastern Nigeria, Ikwerre people made a case in the National Assembly that they are not Ijaws or any other ethnic group and particularly Igbos. No one including Igbos objected this. 1 Like |

Misterdhee1: Where did Ikwerre is not Igbo mean calling for Hausa domination, you see why groups such as Ikwerre should be careful about replacing one dominant political group with another. So the Igbo interest in Ikwerre is for political domination, good thing people like Wike saw the handwriting on the wall and kicked against it. 1 Like |

Igboid: How did the Onitsha people lost their Benin language and Benin names. Hear Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe on Onitsha Benin history. Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Genealogy and Nativity "Thus, in tracing my paternal lineage, I could say that both parents of my father are direct descendants of Eze Chima. As for me, I can trace my paternal ancestry in this wise: I am the first son of Chukwuemeka, who was the third child and first son of Azikiwe, who was the second son of Molokwu, who was the third son of Ozomaocha, who was the second son of Inosi Onira, who was the fourth son of Dei, the second son of Eze Chima, the founder of Onitsha." SOURCE - Nnamdi A zikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p4 http://nigeriavillagesquare.com/forum/main-square/75723-meaning-history-onitsha.html "I can trace my maternal ancestry thus: I am the first son of Nwanonaku Rachel Chinwe Ogbenyeanu (Aghadiuno)Azikiwe, who was third daughter of Aghadiuno Ajie, the fifth son of Onowu Agbani, first daughter of Obi Udokwu, the son who descended from five Kings of Onitsha. Five of these rulers of Onitsha were direct lineal descendants of Eze Chima, who led his warrior adventurers when they left Benin to establish the Onitsha city state in about 1748 AD. " SOURCE - Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p5 "One day I asked her (grandmother) the meaning of the word 'Onitsha'. She explained that it had historical significance. The terminology meant one who despised another. It is a contraction of two words, Onini to despise, and Ncha meaning others. So that the two words when joined together mean one who despises others. Then I asked her why we despised others. She patted me on the back and told me that it was due to our aristocratic background and tradition. I insisted that she should explain to me the basis of this supercilious social attitude. She told me that we despised others because we descended from the Royal House of Benin and so regarded ourselves as the superiors of other tribes who had no royal blood in their veins, " "I continued to belabor my grandmother to tell me more of the history and origins of the Onitsha people. She narrated that many many years ago, there lived at Idu (Benin) a great Oba who had many children. Due to a power struggle regarding the right of precedence among princes of the blood and other altercations, there was a civil war in Benin. One day, the supporters of one of the princes insulted and assaulted Queen Asije, the mother of of the Oba of Benin, who was accused of having trespassed on their farmland. Enraged at this evidence of indiscipline and lawlessness, the Oba ordered his war chief and brother, Gbunwala Asije to apprehend and punish the insurgents. In the attempt to penalise them, Chima, the ultimate founder of the Onitsha city-state, a prince of the blood in his own right, led the recalcitrants against his Uncle, Gbunwala. This intensified the civil war which rent the kingdom of Benin in two and led to the founding of Onitsha Ado N'Idu, , " "As the great trek from Benin progressed, some did not have the stout heart of the pioneer-warrior, and decided to settle at different places, known today as Onitsha -Ugbo, Onitsha-Olona, Onitsha-Mili, Obior, Issele Ukwu, Ossomari, Aboh, etc, " SOURCE - Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p 11 - 12 3 Likes |

I feel so happy whenever I hear that the Ikwerres are not Igbo. The reason is bcuz I don't want a lazy and backward people to be identified as belonging to the very intelligent and smart tribe known as Igbo. Attaching them to the Igbos twill make them feel important and give them a huge value. The ikwerres are not Igbo bcuz Igbos are not lazy and wretched. We are rich. It only the Igbos of Delta State that are truly Igbo. Despite being in oil rich Rivers State the ikwerres can not boast of a handful of rich and great people.Apart from Peter odili, Herbert Nwigwe and a few other that got money and greatness through hooliganism and politics who are the ikwerres are lagging behind every other people in Nigeria. They don't be language. They can't dominate any ppl or in any thing in River State, not to talk of Nigeria. The Igbos are the most blessed tribe in Nigeria, Even in Africa. One day Nigerians will be civilised and jettison the indigenship and embrace citizenship. At that time other tribes will will be dominated by the Igbos. We will (just like the Fulanis and d Jews) dominate Africa. You would find Igbo governor in Kano, Bauchi,Lagos Oyo. Etc. We will buy Rivers State and Chase the useless lots away. By then nobody will claim ownership of any cities or land bcuz it will belong to any rich, smart and enterprising ppl. Parochialism will be obsolete. Ppl will then realize the importance of being an Igbo. We will control Africa just like the Jews |

samuk: Azikiwe reeled out the names of his ancestors from Ezechima to his father Chukwuemeka. Did you see a single Bini name in that genealogy? Moreover the Bini origin of Onitsha is a dead story now. The Onitsha royalty as represented by Igwe Achebe no longer hold that view. History is dynamic. Onitsha are also proud Igbos today. 3 Likes |

[quote author=HAccord post=95966050] Oga I have previously argued the same way as you have. But look at this way, if a son says his biological father is not his real father but points to another man as his father because of certain pecuniary benefits, then his biological father has every right to disown that bastard son. Who sabi Ikwerre? how many exploits have they done to bring pride to the Great Igbo nation apart from cultism, political killings and drinking tombo. Name 5 internationally acclaimed Ikwerre person of repute in any field? They should be begging to identify as Igbos not the other way round. Study them properly, they have nothing to offer the Igbo nation apart from creating confusion everywhere. For public information, Ikwerre are not Igbo, they are the descendants of Iwhuruosa a Bini slave who escaped his captors via the tributaries of River Niger and landed in ancient Igboland. They later would modify the name to 'Iwhuruoha' as the Igbos they met would pronounce the name of their progenitor. Later they came to be known as Ikwerre and I will tell you how. In Igbo the word Ikwerre means 'I agree/accept', the Igbo gave them that name because when they were looking for land to settle after escaping from Bini, anywhere the Igbo gave them to settle, they thank their Igbo hosts by saying 'I kwerre', a corruption of the phrase the phrase 'Ayi kwerre' which means 'We agree/accept' in Igbo. That's the true hidden story of how Ndi Ikwerre came to be where they are today. Go and ask any honest old man around Imo/river axis. I'm from that area myself, they'll tell you- Ndi Ikwerre abughi Ndigbo, ha biara-abia. They are not Igbos, they are escapee slaves from ancient Bini kingdom. They are just not keen in making their Bini heritage public because it undermines them as descendants of Bini slaves but prefer to align with Igbo identity only when it suits them because of the majority status that Ndigbo enjoy. My brother you nailed it. They are like cameleon changes when it suits them. I wonder what an average Igbo man stands to benefit from an ikwere man.the few of them I know are like a leeche. 1 Like |
