It's just so sad my mum was diagnosed 6months ago....after going for treatment, she was told not to eat some particular food again, she abstained but after she was ok, she has returned to d food.....I told her and advised her against it but she told me she's ok now and can eat d food back...

Having tried for so many times to discourage her what she told me was that if she did not eat all these foods what will she be eating as no money to maintain d food recommended to her and I'm not financially ok now as I'm still a job seeker...

I'm just praying nothing should happen to her cos she's all I got

Buy her a blood glucose monitor so she can check her fasting blood sugar every morning.

Sorry to hear this but she really needs to make adjustment and diet change some of which are not so expensive. E. G Guinea corn meal for swallow and eating plenty vegetables. If she goes back to eating normal meals the diabetics might return and she would spend more money and time in treatment. So be strict with her. All the best.

I lost my mum on Jan 3rd from complication due to diabetes

In the last 6 months I have technically reversed mine by have a strict meal plan

I eat Beans and plantain in the morning
I eat fruits in the afternoon
I eat sweet potatoes at Night.

I jog for about 30mins. 3x weekly

I take my drugs daily

My sugar level now for fasting blood sugar is usually below 100mg

And after meal about 120 or lesser

I have also lost weight from 108kg to 98kg.

I feel alive significantly.

And I don’t eat sugary things anymore.
I was addicted to it.

In fact I have banned the 5 white poisons
No rice
No flour
Low salt
No sugar

My mother is diabetic and I am trying to lose weight and avoid the same story. Do you do your fast blood sugar test yourself?

I think about 10k

So I need to address a false Mis conception generally that diabetes is expensive to maintain.

Yes drugs like glucophage can cost about 8k or so. Diamicron 4k...

But the best food actually are extremely affordable.

Until last year. I used to listen to that crappy statement that it is expensive crap.

I hired a cook and was blowing almost 200k monthly

Now I spend less than 30k monthly. 15k on food. 15k on fish. And add 8k on olive oil.

My most expensive food is roasted Titus fish.
I just came back from the market. The 2 bags of sweet potatoes cost me 2k. And this is me in city center. I will easily eat this dinner meal for next 3weeks. A crate of egg is 1k and that can take me up to 1 week. Beans. Is very affordable. Also I use olive oil.

You have to watch your blood pressure too.

Also the general hospital have great diabetic support doctors. That give excellent advise.

I think the real issue is whether you decide that you want to be hospitalized (by then it is becoming late as it could have affected organs like kidney ( which occurred in my mom case ) ) first or you want to deal with the ailment first

It's affordable when you start managing it early. But if ignored and the complications start, it's quite expensive to manage because then you'd be needing insulin shots.

Mine started showing up in my early 20s and now almost 13years later I am just sitting to get a grip of it.

I was getting to almost 500mg when I was just forming ignoramus

This is primarily the reason why I am sharing this detailed information so people can see that the earlier the better they catch it.

Especially those with type 2 diabetes.

They need to study the role of lifestyle in it.

True. But only by checking daily you can get some control and consequently know the type of foods you must avoid, quantity of food you should consume etc.

thats it bro funily enough some people think it's not expensive to manage. When it 1st started we were buoyant and bought all drugs and food diet judiciously but as yr went by nd situation worsening we spent everything on hospital bills. 18yrs isnt 5yrs and as a business man if ur expenses exceed your gains sooner or later you will go bankrupt except you are a government worker who receives pension.

Thanks for the expository write up. If I had heard about glucophage and the other drug you mentioned, I would have bought them for my Mom. Although, before her death she was already on daily insulin shots. Her food was regulated just like you're doing now, however Mom could go to church fasting for days without eating. The last church session she had aggravated her and condition and she died.
Always try to eat early and eat more of beans and vegetables.

BODY How Does Diabetes Affect The Body?

Knowing how diabetes affects your body can help you look after your body and prevent diabetic complications from developing.

Many of the effects of diabetes stem from the same guilty parties; namely high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a lack of blood glucose control.

SIGNS OF DIABETES
When undiagnosed or uncontrolled, the effects of diabetes on the body can be noticed by the classic symptoms of diabetes, namely:

Increased thirst
Frequent need to urinate
Fatigue
Blurred vision and Tingling or pain in the hands, feet and/or legs

LONG TERM EFFECTS OF DIABETES ON THE BODY

In addition to the symptoms, diabetes can cause long term damage to our body. The long term damage is commonly referred to as diabetic complications

Diabetes affects our blood vessels and nerves and therefore can affect any part of the body.

However, certain parts of our body are affected more than other parts.
Diabetic complications will usually take a number of years of poorly controlled diabetes to develop. Complications are not a certainty and can be kept at bay and prevented by maintaining a strong level of control on your diabetes, your blood pressure and cholesterol

These can all be helped by keeping to a healthy diet, avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, and incorporating regular activity into your daily regime in order to keep blood sugar levels within recommended blood glucose level guidelines

THE EFFECT OF DIABETES ON THE HEART
Diabetes and coronary heart disease are closely related.

Diabetes contributes to high blood pressure and is linked with high cholesterol which significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

DIABETES AND STROKES
Similar to how diabetes affects the heart, high blood pressure and cholesterol raises the risk of strokes.

HOW DIABETES AFFECTS THE EYES
A relatively common complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy

As with all complications, this condition is brought on by a number of years of poorly controlled or uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy has a number of symptoms

Damage to the kidneys takes place over a period of years and can picked up by nephropathy screening before it gets too serious. Treatment includes lifestyle changes and may include medicine to treat high blood pressure and cholesterol.

DIABETES AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE NERVES
The effects of diabetes on the nerves can be serious as the nerves are involved in so many of our bodily functions, from movement and digestion through to sex and reproduction.

The presence of nerve damage (neuropathy) is commonly noticed by:

Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
Lack of arousal in the penis or clitoris
Excessive sweating or
Diagnosis of delayed stomach emptying
Treatments for neuropathy concentrates on reducing pain but medication such blood pressure lowering drugs may also be prescribed to help prevent development

DIABETES AND ITS EFFECT ON DIGESTION
Diabetes can affect digestion in a number of ways. If diabetes has caused nerve damage, this can lead to nausea, constipation or diarrhoea.

An alternative cause of disturbed digestion can be the result of diabetes medication

HOW DIABETES AFFECTS THE SKIN
Diabetes affect on the skin is usually a result of its affect on the nerves and circulation which can lead to dry skin, slow healing of cuts, burns and wounds, fungal and bacterial infections and loss of feeling in the foot.

People with diabetes are recommended to have their feet checked at least once a year. The effect of diabetes on the feet is often referred to as diabetic foot

That's one of the major problems with managing diabetes; finance. One has to be financially bouyant to properly manage diabetes especially when it gets to advanced stage. The worst complications of diabetes is that neuropathy, where there is severe pains in the legs and the person would have to be on pain relief drugs. Bro tell your mum to as much as she can adhere to the diets.

My mom is diabetic and she has been suffering severe pains in her legs since 2months ago. Doctors have prescribed different pain relief drugs to her, but none is helping her condition. I don't know how to help her. She cries everyday due to the pain cry

Please could you suggest any drug that could ease the pains?

We used Diclofenac then, the injectable one works very fast. But just know it doesn't cure the pain permanently, it just relieves it for the moment. Other non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs should work too.
