A Stingray. The catcher was lucky. That could have stung him to death in the water.
Rip to Australia’s Steve Irwin.

Is that not a sting ray? Those chaps can kill with a strike of the tail.
People should be careful handling sea creatures they don't know.

A famous death was the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin... he died after being struck in the chest by one of these.

Lol, not entirely true. It has spike on its fin/tail, that's only dangerous when you swim close to it and directly above it because the spike can penetrate the chest and puncture the heart.
But with fishermen, that's far fetched!

Can the sting kill?

Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain, swelling, muscle cramps from the venom, and later may result in infection from bacteria or fungi. The injury is very painful, but seldom life-threatening unless the stinger pierces a vital area. The barb usually breaks off in the wound, and surgery may be required to remove the fragments.

Fatal stings are very rare. The death of Steve Irwin in 2006 was only the second recorded in Australian waters since 1945. The stinger penetrated his thoracic wall and pierced his heart, causing massive trauma and bleeding.
