We know the FG increased the import duties to favour local manufacturers, assemblers etc, while deriving more income for itself, but PAN is faulting it for their selfish aims.

The whole essence of increasing import duty was to make local manufacturers efficient enough to produce more at cheaper rates but it's like the prices of locally assembled cars have continued to soar instead. The problem in this country is just too many. undecided

Sometime is the greed of manufacturer that increase the price

It is not supposed to be cheap. It just needs to be cheaper than the cost to buy and import foreign ones.

Long over due. When the import duties were high locally assembled cars was almost as expensive as their foreign counterparts, so the essence of hiking the import duties has already been defeated. What i've discovered with nigerian economics whenever an imported item is banned or import duties hiked in other to protect locally manufatured, instead of the locally manufactured goods to become cheaper and available, it becomes almost as expensive as the foreign goods, making the purpose of protecting locally manufactured goods defeated. I believe the problem is either we lack the capacity to produce the goods we are banning or our locally manufacturers are just greedy with hiking their price unecessarily for huge profit

As if they have the interest of the common man at heart.

So you want PAN, INNOSON and other local car manufacturers to sell their cars at a loss.....making it difficult for them to pay salaries, suppliers, etc....which means many of the members of the 'common masses' you love, suffer?

Sometimes you Nigerians make me wonder....do you want a socialist country or a capiitalist country?

U think the rich refusing to establish business in Nigeria don't have their reasons?

Government can just wake up and destroy ur investment easily
So all the investments in Nigeria belong the poor, the rich ones invested Abroad.
why are some Asians and other foreigners still want to invest in Nigeria despite government policies.

Locally made cars are expensive because

1.Power sector in Nigeria is not working...largely because we insist on selling power that costs N53 per kwh to produce/generate at N30 per kwh or less.

2.Crucially, we don't have enough small scale industries that make the various tiny parts that go into a car. Meaning companies either have to make those parts (PAN is a good example) or import them (INNOSON...though they are also making more and more componets at home)...and either way that makes production expensive.(Innoson's boss some years ago callled for reduction in import duties on imported car components)

3,.Ajaokuta was not completed.

Very few countries, even rich ones can compete globally and locally in the auto industry. That should tell you something. If all they need is to impose a duty and they magically have powerful auto manufacturers, they would be doing it. It is either we depend on foreign imports and gain unemployment or stagnant economy or we stick to duties. This kind of policy takes decades to produce result. Indian currently imposes 100% import duty on many vehicle imports and has started planning to hike them even further.

Why should the Nigerian made be affordable? You can't compare the product prices of companies who sell millions to those who sell thousands. The million company can afford to sell cheaper and still make a profit. We need the duty to make local manufactures competitive.

Although i'm not an economist, but back in my secondary school days they taught us the concept of comparative advantage. It therefore means we lack the comparative advantage to produce cars due to self imposed logistical limitations like you've highlighted. It would have been better if this issues were fixed first before proceeding to hike import duties

You are right my bro. A case of the banming of rice importation, Farmers prefer to sell the rice at equivalent of the imported price because they believe it is difficult to get the foreign rice thereby defeating Govt objectives in ensuring boom in local rice sales.

That's a lie, i visited Peugeot showroom and i was surprised at the cost Peugeot vehicles as they are over 50% cheaper than their foreign counterparts. The only challenge is how many people buy new vehicles? Majority patronise Foreign used cars, so you may not be in the know.

. You are absolutely correct. Infact now i'm beginning to realize that competition is better than protectionism. Protectionism favours manufacturers and oligarchs while competition favours consumers
