The federal government has offered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) N65bn to resolve the ongoing strike which has lasted for 10 months.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige made the proposal on behalf of the government to the striking lecturers when they met in Abuja on Friday November 20.

He said the negotiation was fruitful as the government has decided to shift grounds on the lingering issues that have kept students out of the classroom for several months.

Ngige told reporters that the Accountant-General of the Federation ( AGF) has offered to release N40 billion or in the alternative, N35 billion to be shared by all the registered Trade Unions in the universities after providing necessary evidence of having earned the allowance.

He said;

“The FG reiterated that her offer of N40 billion or 35 billion whichever is accepted by ASUU was for all the universities unions: ASUU had proposed that N40 billion be paid immediately for all unions."

The Minister who stated that all vice-chancellors are to submit details of the EAA/EA to the National Universities Commission (NUC) on or before November 30, added that the Federal Ministry of Labour and Federal Ministry of Education will review the issue of “no work, no pay” as stipulated in Section 43 of the Trade Disputes Act Cap T8 laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004 with a view to getting approval for the withheld salaries to be paid.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has served an update on its meeting with the representatives of the federal government today November 20.

ASUU disclosed that the federal government has agreed to its demand of paying their members’ salary arrears from February to June through the old salary payment platform, Government Integrated Financial and Management Information System.

The Union affirmed that UTAS which is the platform it presented as an alternative to the Federal Government's Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, is currently undergoing usability test.

ASUU which further revealed that the FG has offered N15billion in addition to the N20billion pledged earlier, said they will now consult with its council and then get back to the government in a short while, to make their final intention known; if the strike will be suspended or not.

Nothing yet o. But I think if the govt can outsource and pay the MDA the backlog of salaries, I think there is high probability of NMWA being paid by month end or early December. IMO

The SSANU leadership are comedians... You sit and watch others fight tooth and nail, then complain about the spoils of the struggle..

Where are your members minimum wage arrears? Common minimum wage arrears una no fit fight for..

Anything wey una see for the N40 billion, una go manage am.. Monkey no fit dey work, make baboon dey chop...
