Dangote cement is currently selling at N140, paid a dividend of N16 last year. If the company pays the same dividend of N16 by April 2020 this will give you a dividend yield of about 11%

We have an infrastructural deficits in the country, government is currently using cements for road constructions, bridges, houses.
Some of the management staff of Dangote cement have increased their shareholdings between last year and now. This shows that they are confident about the growth of the business.


MTN at N105 and below is also okay, you are sure of a minimum dividend of N11. They have also given license to operate a form of banking business for unbanked Nigerians

I invest in industries I understand, I also try to monitor the performance of the companies I have invested in, it good to invest in businesses or industries that are growing.

I am more of a cash flow investor, capital appreciation is secondary.

I will use Zenith bank as an example, Zenith is currently N18.00 per, the earning per share of Zenith bank in 2018 was N5.20k. Out of the N5.20k, N2.80k was paid out as dividends. We are left with N2.40k, out of which some will be transferred to the reserve, kept with CBN and also used to expand the business.

If a stock of N18.00 gives a dividend of N2.80k, this will give you a dividend yield of about 14%.

Another interesting fact is that, it is not all the earning that was paid out as dividend. The remaining fund will be ploughed back into the business and will create more wealth to the investors.

In 2006 Zenith had less than 100 branches, but because part of the profits made was ploughed back into the business, they now have about 300 branches.

Investors who earned 70k dividends per share in 2006 now earned N2.80k in 2018, due to the expansion and growth of the business. Dividend quadrupled between 2006 and 2018. This beat inflation and devaluation of our currency.

The most important thing that will determine success is the experience, knowledge and integrity of the business managers and also buying at a good price.

Capital market is not for the short term, money market is the right place for short term Investments.

Short term returns in the capital market is an aberration and not the norms, trying to time the market is an exercise in futulity.


Once in a while some special situations can happen eg those who bought Diamond bank at 80k before Access bank showed interest in buying the bank the share price rose to over N6.00 in a year this happened last year or there about.

When Dangote bought back Dangote Flour from Tiger Foods of South Africa, the share price moved from less than N1.00 to almost N3.00. Few months after Olams put a price of N24.00 on each shares of Dangote Flour. Those who held on from 80k to N24.00 made good money in less than 30months. I couldn't wait till N24.00, was able to sell at N17.

Aliko Dangote cashed out over N120 billion from the transaction.


So tell me why someone offered to buy a stock that was priced at 80k for N24? Olams is not stupid, they are smart Indian businessmen.

The stock market is ruled by greed and fear, ruled by fear in a bear market and greed in a bull Market.

When ruled by fear a stock with an intrinsic value of N2.00 can be priced 50k in the market, when ruled by greed a stock of 50k can be priced N2.00. Ability to identify this anomaly is key if you are a value investor.

Zenith bank currently has an equity of over N1 Trillion, made a profit of over N200 billion last year has about N6 Trillion as deposits and will do better in 2020, but currently has a market capitalisation of less than N800 billion on the stock exchange, was even valued in the market for N330 billion in March 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Those who had the cash flow and resources to buy at that time will be enjoying a dividend yield of 28% and capital appreciation of over 100%


There is a whole lot of difference between the noise in the market, demand and supply for a stock on the exchange and the management, growth and profitability of the company.

A dead company, a company making losses, with poor fundamentals can enjoy positive market sentiment and appreciate in price, but such appreciation will definitely evaporate as we see with many penny stocks.

While the stock price of a growing and well managed company can fall or stagnant, but at the right time those who keyed in when market sentiment was not in favour of this company can make 5 to 10 baggers when market sentiment changes

Sir, you make a lot of good points for investors that want to stay in the stock market for the long haul but as I have said several times, most retail investors are not there for long term investing. Go to the NSE thread and you will see what I’m talking about. People are buying and selling to make gains now. Not in 5 or 10 years and surely not in 20 years. It will work for a bit as new money floods the market. But as soon as the big boys and speculators move, a lot of people will be left stranded. It’s the big boys, insiders and speculators that determine the swings in a small inefficient market like ours.

Stockbrokers and people that earn a living from selling secondary stocks to the retail market will not like this but to be very honest, those that are low key making consistent short/medium term gains in this market of ours are

1. People with contacts in listed companies, financial advisory firms and law firms that advise these listed companies and institutional investors and know all that is going on in the market through their professions

2. Insiders at these financial advisory firms, law firms and the companies that participate in the market

3. People with contacts at accounting/audit firms that have info on quarterly and annual reports before it reaches the markets

4. People with contacts at CBN and other government agencies that get macro info, policies and directives before they reach the market

5. People with contacts at speculators and the big boys (large traders/investors) that know their every move and can react as soon as these bosses move. Stockbrokers also give tips to contacts on large trades by the big boys

6. Few lucky bastards that many people envy

The ordinary investor does not stand a chance (except by luck or the grace of God ). Not in this small inefficient market. Some spend a lot of time on spreadsheets while others spend a lot of time and money to seek these info but in my opinion, it is not worth it. Why spend my time stressing about short term NSE gains when I can use that time to double my hustle and make more money and still have enough money after dashing ‘bros inflation’ some of that money?

When retail investors start holding a huge chunk of listed companies’ shares and the investment environment becomes more favorable for FPIs to invest long term then our markets will become more developed and we won’t see the activities of a few big boys largely determining prices. Plus government needs to make scape goats of insider traders.

I agree with your idea though about going long term and personally just throw in what I can afford to part with and forget about it. Maybe it will make me fabulously wealthy when I am old and tired and really need that money but only time will tell.

There are people that have access to information before it ever gets out and they take positions before that information reaches news outlets. These are the guys that make a lot of the short term money in Nigeria.

Example, I work in an audit firm and I know stock A will report bad earnings, I will dump my stocks (and tell my friends and family to do the same) while the reports are going through approval processes. By the time it gets approved and sent out to the news, we have chopped and cleaned mouth while people that see it in the news will start scrambling to sell.

And on this one I have to give credit to the policy makers in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (and the SEC) because their recent policy on transparency has really bridged the gap

I never said a business that goes bad. I said a business that reports poor results. A lot can actually happen within a 3+ month period that the market doesn’t know until reports come out. Don’t forget it takes a few weeks before reports are released. How can you know that sales or net profits in a quarter are much lower than projected before it gets to the news if you do not have inside information? If a company is not able to renew long term contracts with key customers, there are insiders that will get this info and dump the stock before it is announced during the call/meeting to discuss the quarterly earnings where the CEO will make this announcement.

A shareholder in a publicly listed company is not involved in running the company and will only find out certain information when it hits the news.

Sir, you may be one of the very few geniuses around that can read the market, predict earnings accurately and always make money without luck and inside information. I’m not taking it away from you. But this does not apply to majority of retail investors that are looking for short term returns.

You are wrong sir. Insider trading is not allowed in the NYSE. People go to jail for that. Jeff Skilling (Enron) and Martha Stewart that TV cooking lady went to jail for insider trading. They track these things on the NYSE.

The good old days of stockmarketnigeria. I sold too based on that advise and that of people liike Wanaj0. I was selling gradually and sold the bulk of my holdings with good profit.

So bond traders who got information about the policy changes of Alan Greenspan before he announced and implemented them did not commit "insider dealings "?
Dont you know that the feds monetary policies AFFECT the bond markets directly?

And if a set of people have access to the info first and take positions accordingly, does it not show that the game is already rigged to the favour of some privileged ones ?

There are always leaks
No system is fool proof
Watching congressional hearings occasionally overtime have opened my eyes to a lot

No human system is devoid of cracks
We only do our best to put regulations in place

And yes insider trading is a crime that has punishment
But when you have top notch lawyers and have the money to induce witnesses that may testify against you; you WONT go to jail for it

Worst comes to worst, you pay a fine , which btw is not even going to be equal to the amount that you fleeced people of , when you did what you did

If you are talking about Gupta(McKinsey/Goldman Sachs), he went to jail for two years and killed his career. The Hedge Fund Manager he disclosed information to got 11 years and is probably still in jail. Insider Trading is illegal in the US and lots of people have gone to jail for it. Please don’t come here and tell me about conspiracy theories around. That is you just trying to sound smart after goofing. The fact that you won’t admit it was a goof is what makes you sound more stupid.
