People in government always look for a new method oppress the people and suppress their voice instead of solving the one's at hand already, thereby causing more problems for themselves and the country at large.

Tueh for the people in power, I tire for una.

Nigerians are terrible people. What is wrong in switching off your phones.

This is a standard practice all over the world.

People always looking for cheap blackmail.

Even in courts, you dont put on your phones.

Who did we offend in this country.

Watch how the Igbos terrorists will flood this thread with their usual ranting.

And what is wrong with switching off phone in court...

Is that not a common thing? Can't common sense tell you that it is wrong for your phone to ring in court? Or for you to start video recording the event in court?

Anybody who is caught recording the events of the court should be thrown in jail... Rubbish

They don't have to tell you to switch of your phones, it's the right thing to do.

They don't allow phones in similar settings all over the world, but everything must be different in Nigeria because we are always lawless, unruly with false sense of entitlement.

They go to sane climes and abide by these simple rules, but in their Nigerian jungle, it's a different story, anything goes.

They shout and demonstrated that they want a better Nigerian, but they can not do the simplest things to better Nigeria.

If they say "Turn off Your Phone" then use a video camera. Video camera is not a phone, is it?

Nothing will come out of the probe, it was meant to cajole and calm down people, just a useless probe.

If Ringtones were the problem, they should just tell the journalists to put their phones in 'Silent Mode'. Simple.
But to say using phones is not allowed, is the beginning of their usual clampdown.

If there are persons or information to be protected, it cant be by a blanket ban on use of Phones, as a journalistic tool.
The Judge/Panel Chairman can order Pictures/Names/Pictures/Information to be redacted by Journalists, on a case-by-case basis
and any Journalist who flouts such order will be guilty of contempt of Court.

There are sensible ways to go about this, if the intention is sincere, than a blanket ban.
Everything in Nigeria under this Buhari is tending towards full-blown Dictatorship and Tyranny

But we are aware that Govt does not implement Reports of Panels, they only use it to buy time. undecided undecided
Time will tell on this one

You are wrong and TERRIBLE.
The purpose of phones have changed, it is no longer a tool for mere conversation as it used to be, most journalist nowadays dont carry that big Camera and Microphone anymore, they just carry a good Smart phone and it does the job;
Phones are the new tools of Journalism or would you deprive a Journalist of his Camera and Microphone..... all over the world? grin

Later, Editi Effiong gave an update indicating that the “Turn off your phones” rule has been reversed.

Are members of the judicial panel here, can you all see this thread?

There are only four items permissible for any credentialed jjournalist to bring in.

1. ID credentials
2. Pen and paper
3. Audio recorder
4. Camera.

Any other item besides these must be possessed in line with restricted use.
Cell phone is not a journalism tool. If you need recording use proper professional tools - 2, 3 and 4.

No exception, any journalist using cellphone should be ejected. Restriction of cellphone is not censorship, it is not a professional equipment.

.
Will they allow cameras or camcorders?

Mind you, it is not all embassies that border about phones (outside Nigeria)

And for flights, you can put it in Flight mode, and not switch it off.

If they are concerned about ringtones or distractions, the notice should have been to put phone on silent mode or flight mode. And not 'Switch Off'
