Almost two years ago, I bought my first pseudo-performance vehicle.

An 07 Infiniti G35 with 306 HP. Great car, and powerful enough to punch way above its weight class. My user experience probably a few other people I know to get the same car.

Anyway, two years after, I'd gotten a bit more mature and just wanted something more comfortable. Of course, I wouldn't tolerate going to a slower car, so it also had to be powerful enough.

Shortlisted:

- Cadillac ATS
- Dodge Charger RT
- Audi A6
- Acura TL SH-AWD

Slowly started canceling them off the list.

The ATS would've been difficult to own due to availability of parts. The only cars it shares most parts with are the 2014+ CTS and 2016+ Camaro, none of which are popular in the country.

The Charger was similar. I hit up Eddee and realized that I wouldn't be able to get parts easily in my side of the country.

The A6 would've been perfect but Audi's tend to be designed by brainless junkies.

The TL just didn't have the grunt I needed.

The last options? An Infiniti M56 or a W212 E550.

I went with the latter. Albeit, in coupe form. The sedan E550 is probably the better car but was exclusively offered with airmatic. The coupe used regular electronic adaptive shocks instead. That was the one for me.

It's important to know what you're getting into. The E550 was offered in two engines.

The M273 5.5L V8 in 2010/2011, also used in the 07+ E550, the W221 S550, and the W219 CLS550. The other was the M278 4.6L twin turbo V8, used in all 550 models from 2012 to 2018.

I'll be honest. The M278 is the better engine. More power, more torque, better fuel economy, and comes mated to the improved 7G-Tronic Plus.

But. My budget could only stretch as far as a 2012 and the first few years of the engine had timing chain tensioner and fuel injector issues. Also, I'm not a fan of forced induction engines. I much prefer simple naturally aspirated motors.

In addition, the M273 is essentially a bigger variant of the M272 on ubiquitous cars like the pre-facelift C300. It was a no-brainer.

I hit my plug up.
Actually, I first contacted AMDMan. Great guy, but the prices listed felt a bit too much, and I'm not a fan of Canadian cars.

Deltel it was, then. Na him first help me run my previous car anyway.

Auction was scheduled for Aug 24. Went successfully.

- Vessel was in Nigerian waters on October 4
- Vessel berthed on October 9
- Clearance began on October 10
- #ENDSARS protests began

grin grin grin

The way I take dey fear eh, especially that period wey hoodlums enter Tincan. Anyway, car wasn't touched. I don't think the thugs ever gained entry.

- Car left the port on October 30

Contacted Diportivo to help fly it down from Lagos. He was busy but finally agreed.
grin

It pays to be a man of the people.

- Car was with me by November 9

Ten weeks from purchase to my doorstep, of which it was marooned for over two weeks due to the protests.

All through the process, Deltel maintained uttermost professionalism. I dey do oversabi sometimes and like micro-managing, so that's no easy feat.

One of my biggest fears was port security. Plenty of stories about Port rats, offloading damage, etc.

It's a bit hard to tell if the car was damaged while offloading. But only one thing was missing when it got to me that I'm sure was in the car when it left the US. The start/stop button. It's a simple $9 item that has been bought.

Headlight control module was also missing.
But I don't know where that happened.

So, on to the most important things.

It's a fine car. Far more refined than the Infiniti, perhaps at the expense of engagement.
Even with the V8, it's not a sports car. It's a grand tourer. Soaks up bumps and has plenty of power on tap.
While the G35 makes its power brutishly and at the top end, the E550 is silky smooth and simply pulls you to ludicrous speeds. Very smooth.

For example, if I have a gallon o fuel when accelerating in the G35, it usually falls over. It doesn't in the Merc. It's the torque that's simply amazing. 394 lb-ft at 2800 rpm. More than an E90 BMW M3, a Lexus LFA, or an Audi R8 V8. About the same as a Ferarri 458 Italia.

In comparison, the G35 doesn't make its peak torque of 268 until about 5300 rpm. That makes for a big difference in driving experience, it also means I can sit at 100km/h with the engine lazying about at 1500 rpm.

That said, the VQ35HR is a much more exciting engine. This 5.5L was designed for smoothness in the S Class, not for racing. It shows. The exhaust note is also very muted, and even when you step on it, it just growls softly.

Make person dash me Magnaflow mufflers, I'm pleading.
Cc: Radautoworks

The car is fully loaded, essentially. It's only missing the Distronic Package.

The 12-speaker Harman Kardon system bangs. It's almost overkill for a coupe.

I have heated seats, panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, paddle shifters, pretty much everything.

Handling isn't as good as the G35. You can feel the weight of the car. But it's definitely capable. Besides, my boy racer days are over.

Steering is too light. It's what I hate most about the car.

Engine is rated at 382 HP, but I'll eventually get a tune to push it to 415 HP. Other planned mods include exhaust work, an Android headunit, and UR strut bars for tighter handling.

Car has just 88k miles on it with complete service history.

Shout out to

- Deltel for handling everything
- OPUSDEI1 because na my oga at the top
- Gazzuzz for his hospitality
- Nakoks for his help
- Diportivo for being a world class pilot
- Eddee and 9icetoo for their advice
- CarguideNG for an impeccable carfax
- PattyBF for registration and tint permit

Obviously, this was only done with the help of the Cartalk family. wink

I do. But yeah, those engines are ridiculously thirsty, especially with the 5-speed. The G37 should be better.
