Any Hope In Nigeria Or Just Move To Canada? (Finally moved to UK) by confusedmind1: 12:19am On Dec 10, 2020
Hello nairalanders,

Help me in making the right decision on the next step to take.

I'm a programmer working remotely for an European based company where I earn 450 to 500k monthly depending on the exchange rate. I stay in the Eastern part of the country where cost of living is more affordable so I make a decent savings monthly as I cut my expenses as much as possible.

I have issue with making a decision between settling down here in Nigeria and running a tech company(which I have a already started investing on for some months now) or channeling my energy to pursing the Canada express entry program.

I seem to be too comfortable but the way people are leaving the country it makes it to be as if we do not have hope in the country and the only hope is traveling abroad. I have some friends who are doing better than me here in Nigeria that had already left.

Currently I have built a bungalow where I stay with my family, and also started foundations for block of flats which I intend to rent after completion, but recently I started having cold feet if I should continue with the building of block of flats and at the same time building my tech company or just abandon it and divert my energy to Canadian express entry so I can move and start afresh in Canada with my family.

Please I need your advice on how to choose my next step.

Modified on 19/10/2021

Thank you all for the advice here it helped me in making the best decision of my life.

I eventually moved to the UK and in just 1 month I have a good software developer job supporting my Masters's Degree.

Please move from Nigeria if you have the means

No one can make any decisions for you, you are the one that can decide for yourself. However most pple that travel do so for better healthcare, and security.

Finally, 30 years from now, will your children thank you for leaving Nigeria or curse you for staying? Think about it! Good luck

I will go with this poster or per adventure seek for further study abroad. This can boast your chance of getting VISA.

You are a programmer, you work remotely and can work anywhere in the world, your current salary is $1000 a month

I think the next move in your life is to relocate to Canada, take the next adventure to better your chances in life and be a part of a better Economy like Canada

Leave this country for good and never look back. The level of insecurity and corruption in this country might kill you. There's nothing more better than living in a country where the government cares about you and good living in certain. Your children will also have the opportunity of being a first world citizens and access to quality education, security, healthcare and sane environment.

Have you lived abroad before ? As a legal resident ? You're telling him to pass up a Canadian passport because of a tech company?

Boss, abeg make the move.

As for running a company, it's a tech business and you can run your business from outside the country when you employ the right and competent people. You can always rent out the house(s) you have built (or currently building).

Do it not just for yourself, but also for your children who would be grateful to you 2 decades down the line.

He can get the canadian passport later...it will even be more easier when he becomes successful in his tech company...he shouldn't trade his comfortable life for an anticipated life in canada

You didn't answer my questions. Nothing is guaranteed. A change in administration, immigration laws, etc, can make it harder or impossible to get the passport in the future. He lives in a country where the military was ordered to kill its own citizens. No light, running water, local police force and politicians ranked worst in the world, low life expectancy, etc. This is far from a comfortable life. Someone who's comfortable wouldn't be on nairaland debating if he should migrate. Nobody who lives in Canada, creates a thread asking if they should migrate to Nigeria. You know why ? Because they're truly comfortable.

Its foolish to stay in a 3rd world country because of a tech business. Not everything is about money. Naija guys claims they're the biggest hustlers, yet they get cold feet about migrating to Canada. Too afraid to hustle here ?

Canada passport doesn't wait for anyone. Make hail while the sun shine. A time will come when Canada will close her immigration route. And by the way, OP is getting older. The more he waits, the more the process get harder and competitive.

He can run his tech biz over there if he wants to. The Nigeria environment right now doesn't favour businesses.

Wait.. an EU based tech company is paying you approx N500k a month? That's like €1000..

They are short-changing you my dear!

A programmer shouldn't earn that little whether working remotely or not.

Bro they are using you o. In the west, you would be making six figures in dollars and pounds and you can run your tech startup from abroad. Risevest is one of the hottest tech companies in Nigeria. The founder stays in the USA. A lot of tech companies in Nigeria are registered in the USA and the founders shuttle between San Francisco and Lagos. Take the move now you have the chance to and now that immigration is friendly to programmers. You have no idea what the future might hold O.

You definitely underpaid...

You need to relocate to that European country and you will get what you deserve if you work on euro soil..

As a programmer going to canada is a very great idea... But do you have a job offer?

You can make as mush as 130kCAD a year as a programmer but the question is... Do you think its will be easy for a 3rdworld country citizen to compete with Canadian, American, European and Indians for IT jobs..

My advice relocate on studies

You need to earn some education in Canada before your cv attract that big IT company

The crucial aspect is does he have enough funds to sustain his family and at the same time run a tech biz in canada

But he said he's been saving a big chunk of his salary over the years. Meaning he has the fund to make the move without stress.

By the way, his occupation is needed around the world. It won't be hard for him to land a job once he get there. Programming is well sort after all over the world.

So he has no issue landing a job at most within 3 to 4 months of arrival. Besides, he will be paid times 3 of what he is earning here right now and will possibly be able to acquire properties back home if he so wish.

It will be a nice choice for him to move. He will never regret it as a programmer.

I feel I have an idea who this is?

Well, here is my own opinion. I think with the current economic situation you should leave besides what are the chances of your startup survival?
If you move to CA, you stand a better chance of saving from your pay and come back later on to launch your startup. You can also meet VCs and Angels who would be willing to take the risk and invest. The good thing is you have achieved all this while holding a Canadian PR, which in turn guarantees your future generations a better life.
If you feel you idea is solid though and all things being equal, your startup will scale then you can stay back otherwise FLEE.

Honestly, that opinion is just crazy. The startup may fail due to the economic situation of the country, and those properties may never be sold off, or even loose value with time due to the rate the Naira is falling.

A programmer shouldn't earn that little whether working remotely or not.

His pay boils down to his negotiation ability, his stack, skill level and year's of experience.

FlutterWave, BuyCoins, PayStack and so many others are all registered in the US. Nigga kills startups easily, take a look at Gokada, and Opay and how they died out.

No EU or US company would pay him more than that for working remotely from a third world country for them.

There are programmers in those countries that can handle the job better. But for the fact that the company is looking for a way to reduce cost, they decided to seek hands in third world countries where the little pay goes a long way.

My younger brother is into freelancing jobs for different companies in EU and US. He is paid using my PayPal account because I’m outside the country. Nigerians can’t receive PayPal. I can never take up that kind of pay for the job he does for them. Because, to me, it looks like they are exploiting him. But for him, it’s a lot of money because he is in Nigeria. These companies outsource for the job in poor countries so they can pay less.

If OP wants to make more, his best bet is to move to countries where those companies are.

Hello sir, i'm considering registering for the Stutern accelerator course in software development, which cost 540k. Its a 6 month full stack course for front and back end with react and Node.js. or that of Eduraka costing about 250k. When done, with just 6months of experience, what can be my feasible earning before i relocate abroad ?

A guide to a productive stack would be helpful. Thanks
