I'm Yoruba and I believe the correct translation for 'destiny' in Yoruba is 'Àyànmó'.

I ask myself, what does this mean!?
Simply put without complicating matters, àyànmó breaks down as;

"To choose (yàn) and add (mó) to something already in place/existing".

Hence the philosopher said; 'Mans destiny is in his hands'.

Dangote sits atop the financial chain in the country today because he keeps adding to his dreaming new ambitions, Elon is making waves because he won't stop choosing newer ideas to pursue......... If as a poor man you fail to 'choose' to be rich and do what's required you shall remain poor.

In life, everything grows/expands/get better by receiving novelty. A man that doesn't desire a good thing wouldn't do the works necessary to achieve and hence shouldn't expect to receive the fruits of doing the good works.

It's astounding the wisdom we can attain IF we come back home


By the choices I make, hence my actions and/or inactions I Am.

Come back home and stop confusing yourselves by means of a foreign language.

There was this real life story an old woman told me those days. She said in 1940s, she was told by a native doctor that she has a very tall tree in her house and some individuals will try to cut
down the tree, but they won't be successful, meaning she will give birth to a very rich man, and no body will succeed in killing him and it eventually happened in 1980s, and I my self witness it. Yes scripturally, destiny is real. God has a plan prepared for you before you got here.
But fulfilling it ,is very optional because of the gift of freewill given to you.
For you to make most of it:
You have to know it exists
You have to ask for it
You have to take account of your natural endowment because everything points to a purpose.
Just as man makes nothing without purpose, so does God.
You cannot do everything and prosper by them equally
It also requires lots of hardwork and searching to understand your purpose on earth.
It is also in stages, as you get your self trained and fulfil a level, the next is opened to you.
If you decide not to work towards it ,which is your choice,you may experience some success but you may not experience ultimate fulfillment.

I think what Àyànmó ni Kádàrá means is "What will be will be". Something like, Qué Sera Sera.

I for one belief in destiny and predestination. We can alter it through some metaphysical force. The world we live in is vast and concentrated beyond our reasoning.

Using the movie analogy There is a Master Script and we all are actors or pawn in the divine scheme of things so if you are destiny to be rich u will be even if you drop out and go to Prison infact that prison u went is how you gonna make money in life. The choice we make can offset a different course of reality. That's why destiny is tied with time. If one can go back in time and change a certain important decisive event in time it will change the course or path of one destiny. How do we know we have free will yes we have the ability to choose yes or no why don't we think the answer we choose is also part of destiny life as a whole is rule by certain uncontrollable phenomenon. The concept of destiny and predestination has always been a subject for argument as some ardently believe in it while others don't, some others are just indifferent about it. I used to tell people that if destiny does not exist, then why does the word 'destiny' have a translation in most or even every languages? Yoruba people will always say that, 'the head that will wear the crown must eventually wear the crown'.

Personally, I believe that destiny is what we don't have control over, a path or a pattern a man's life trajectory must follow, an unavoidable end of a man either good or bad. However, I think that not all men have destinies to fulfill as some are mere victims and beneficiaries of choices, circumstances and chances. I will explain.

I see life as a movie that has both active and passive actors and God Almighty, the Creator himself is the script writer. I think that only the active actors, those who have a major role in life have destinies. Jeremiah 1:5 says “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” No wonder people always say God knows tomorrow just like a scriptwriter will alway know the end of a movie he wrote.

The life of Jesus Christ is a perfect example of destiny and I belief many other people of old and present age are like that. Take for example, Goodluck Jonathan, how would he have become a president in a country like Nigeria if not for destiny? Destiny can also be an incurable curse and that's is why some people don't have the power to stop somethings about themselves (habits and characters) because they are destined for destruction. For example, some people will never stop arm robbery just because they are destinies to die by the gun.

On the other hand, can we say that those babies that were born and died immediately have destinies? Well, I don't think so, I will group them with the passive actors in life, those who plays minor roles in life (the waka pass). Some other lives are victims and beneficiaries of choices, circumstances and chances- those who the saying, 'your destiny is in your hands' fits. I belief this set of people are the majority in life. They can achieve whatever they want to.

Well, the above are just my personal thoughts destiny which are subjected to debate and reorientation. In fact, I have heard from an elderly man who is a strong believer in destiny that, some men are destined to have more than one wife no matter how discipline they are. Hmmm!

Now, do you also believe in destiny? If yes, can destiny be really altered by prayers and curses? And for those who do not believe destiny, what are your reasons?

From josielewa's input, I think àyànmó ni kádàrá would translate loosely as "Choices makes our fate". Hence, putting it in context Que Sera Sera does carry similar undertones, so yes!

Some people lament today that if only Adam and Eve did not disobey God,i.e by eating the forbidden fruit.Let me make it clear to you that everything that happens in our world today-whether good or bad-is exactly the way the almighty God wanted it to be.Imagine when there was war in heaven and the devil was casted down to the earth.And for what?To come and be tormenting the people of the earth.Why did God not kill him outrightly?

Sorry to say,you have only learnt assumptions.Nobody's destiny is in their hands.They talk about one's destiny being in one's hand.But the fact is that it's this same destiny that pushes you to make the choices you make.We are living in a spiritually programmed world.I can prove to you that everything that is happening in our world today is exactly how God planned it.As human beings,we can only strive and pray for a better life.
