Bro the thread clearly says, "what's your next plan if school doesn't work out"? Not "is skill worth more than education"?

Part of his comment was "My main plan and back-up plan all involves me getting an education so if you like be there and be doing "vocational skill" .we'll see how far that really gets you" .

So according to the thread's title, does one still opt for education when it has clearly failed him in a failed country like Nigeria? That's why his comment is laughable, because it doesn't work that way in a setting like Nigeria.
And yes, you can be successful through a skill you acquired without finishing or going through higher institution.

My point of exactly.

Education is no longer the key to success in Nigeria.

It's better nowadays, to make money and go back to school than studying hoping to make money from it
And if you are making money legally you would learn some very valuable human and business skills on the way before furthering your education, at that point employment isn't your major concern because you have a proven system that can always generate cash to you.

If you ask me I'd say you got a little too philosophical in your post. We're talking about the job market and how you plan to survive if education doesn't work out and your explanation doesn't pan out.

In our economy today the fact is that there is no room for upcoming businesses to thrive or even get the profit they were expecting. If you ask me almost all business ventures in our country are over saturated and don't bring profit. The only solution is to get an education (a wide one not just ssce or a bachelor's) and I assure you that there will be no limit to the success you can achieve ( just kidding there is actually a limit because this is Nigeria).

Like Nwadykexcel the person above you said "Those looking at skill acquisition as a substitute for education are truly shortsighted."

Fin
Most of you don't know the difference between schooling and education. Skill acquisition is the way forward for any individual especially in a third world country that wants to thrive. BSc, PhD are all schooling. Schooling doesn't make you rich.

I don't have strength again.
Let me point out a certain thing.
I see that everyone here fancies having a skill. That isn't so great.i believe a friend above mentioned something about skills and businesses being "over-saturated".Every body tries to do the same things. And there in an inexhaustible list of those things.
It's not gonna be good that a country with a huge population as ours has an economy that runs on "skills and infant businesses"
It won't take us anywhere.
Saturation is a clear indication that their is a market for it, money is not limited.

Yes, during my early days I often say this same things he said and set a dream to pursue, at some point the Nigeria system broke me, at some point I ran away, at some point for tge first time I forget about my dreams, at some point I settled for less because I thought its over, my thought was let me just be doing this casual work are people doing it and starting up a family not hunan, neither did I know that despite me forgotten my dreams, God did not forget. I'm back on track now aiming higher than I once envisioned and I believed if am not broken after all those hurdles, nothing will. Now I know I will surely and I'm destined toi be great

It's not a crime to have a dream but you have to be realistic about the plan. This guy talked down on vocational skills and people are correcting him. Wisdom demands that there should be a plan B if plan A fails. Plan B can be temporary or replace plan A, depending on your goals and your situation. People who have gone ahead are telling him what it is like, he should be open-minded and do some research. Unless he is from a rich home though and will likely move abroad. Some persons after getting all the degrees will still come to look for entry level jobs because they have no experience and have been locked in schools. The world has changed, the question today is what can you do?

great, but this should have come first. I hope he sees this now.

Advice needed please,

I have no vocational skills or whatsoever, but I am a loom machine operator(machine that produces sack bag), I have once headed the mixing unit of a not very large beverage unit where I was in charge of missing, measuring the chemicals needed for soft drinks production of all flavors, and also produce and supervise the cooking of the soft drinks, I have experience in the plastic making factories and I have work in the plate and ceramic making machine, with notable experience at the biscuit making factories. I also know a little about welding and fabrication

I have no experience in the IT sector because of some reasons, I'm currently doing my HND in mechanical engineering but because of the economical and the unemployed situations in Nigeria, I'm still a little bit afraid of what the future hold and with the fact that I have no knowledge about the IT sector.

With the little experience I have, can I say I have something to offer? What do you think I should do to give me a better chance in the near future sir, because I don't think I have a plan B yet

Won't really call it plan B though,
I'm naturally versatile so regardless of excelling in my acedemics I still would venture into various other things, which I have currently began,...

Most importanly guys try to discover your purpose on earth, not just to get a job,a skill or a business...
You guys should try to get closer to your Creator to know him and to know why you were made, what unique problem were you created to profer a solution to....

Seek for divine direction,it's through this avenue that you will find eternal fufilment and essence.

In the meantime, I'm acquiring lot of skills that can turn into businesses. I've acquired about 3-4 and have taken 2-3 online courses, I'll add another soon. But be aware that this is Nigeria and anything can happen but as the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day'.
