Claudiusdeux:No 1. What if the civilian Administration after balewa wasn't core North? You think the north wouldnt still react. There were rumours that aside nzeogwu's camp, there were other coups coming through. It was a matter of who struck first. 2. Damned Ironsi. Such a fine officer. Perhaps tribalism? Or he supported the coup? or he didn't want to be hasty? 3. Terrible mistakes. He paid with his life. Too bad millions of others too did. 4. Why they didn't act, I have no idea. I've read numerous sources confirm it. Coup's were an in thing in Africa then. Maybe they were overwhelmed, or underestimated the khaki boys. I just feel one way or the other, we would still have had that civil war. Maybe in a different way. Maybe a longer one like Congo and those other countries. |

Time Magazine has never had an award called Leader of the Year. He was simply featured on the cover of the magazine because he happened to be Nigeria's Prime minister at the point of indept. RuudVanNisteroy: |

May Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, and other Northern Politicians and Northern military officers (such as Gen. Maimalari) who were cowardly and unjustifiably killed by Chukwuma Nzeagu and his gang, continue to rest in peace. In Nzeagu's strategic blunder Nigeria, Africa and black race died. Thankfully, Nzeagu and his boys have since paid the ultimate price, deservedly. His people have paid and are still paying the same as the generational curse continues. God Has forsaken them as nothing good come from them both at home and abroad. 3 Likes |

Balewa was actually not a Fulani but from an indigenous tribe in Bauchi state. Though a muslim,he wasn't a fanatic like that fanatic Ahmadu Bello. His death benefitted the Fulani demonic and hegemonic hold on Nigeria. |

rosskiti: I think we should all remember that the world is a place of competition even though we are pretentious of this notion. A prosperous Nigeria will have it's advantages and disadvantages to the imperial British. My brother, they are better prepared to take advantage of us for their betterment. I am inclined to blame our leaders all the way but I am most time inudiated with the notion that you can only give what you have. That is what is lacking at independence, we are challenged to give what we never had. Then the euphoria of independence and strong conviction of super achievement without the 'what and how' was our greatest undoing, which nailed then and even now the prospect for failure. I am sorry to be part of the failed generation and even now the future of the country is more gloomy and then almost everybody could see danger ahead and our best bet for now is to run and move as fast as possible out of the country because the rouge's who are the immediate beneficiary of our independence are indeed still in control and may not release the stronghold until a complete nockout. God bless Nigeria. |

Teenaira: My brother we all have to play our part to restore the lost glory of this country. If we all run away is that a good sign for our kids and the generations unborn? I lived a good part of my life overseas and did my Master's degree there as well. I was one of the fortunate ones to come back to a job waiting for him. I understand your pains but that mindset is not beneficial for this nation. Cheers. 2 Likes |

youngblaq:In as much the other guy came across as rude to your initial submission but we should make conscious effort to reduce the hype for these Europeans, what is the advantage of speaking Queen's English to a black man? nothing!!! I would rather rate Balewa on other aspects than his ability to speak Queens English. No language is superior to the other, some parents even banned their wards from speaking their indigenous languages at home, we are really loosing it in this part of the world, when there is a U.N congress, serious countries speak in their indigenous languages, it is a big shame we are at this level, have you seen Wayne Rooney obsessed about speaking Yoruba? or a lampard obsessed about speaking Igbo? There is nothing glamorous about a black man speaking Queens language. Obsession of most Nigerians with the ability to speak the Queen's English is a trait we do not need to pass to the next generation. |

Are there polical leaders in the North that are this sound, learned, confident, outspoken and collectively focused like this man? They might not be many of this like, but can't they see this man as role model? Or was he not a Muslim? |

RuudVanNisteroy: TIME MAGAZINE was and still remains the wing and integral part of colonialism. They knew Abubakar was actually less educated in western civilization then Azikiwe and Awolowo. The colonialists have used praises as weapon of denigration especially against those who oppose them in their game. I would not be surprised an iota. |
