Nigeria is producing graduates whose education makes them more dangerous than uneducated people - Afe Babalola

Founder of Afe Babalola University in Ado-Ekiti, (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), says Nigeria's standard of education has fallen so drastically that graduates from Nigerian Universities have become more dangerous than uneducated people in the society, IgbereTV reports.

Babalola stated this when he spoke at a reception held in Igbajo, Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State for Prof. Damilola Olawuyi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Research and Strategic Partnerships of the institution who recently became a Senior Advovate of Nigeria (SAN).

“The common saying is that ignorance is a disease. I do agree. Indeed, poor education is worse than illiteracy. Poor education is even more dangerous than ignorance. But what do we have today?

Due to poor education, Nigeria is today producing graduates whose education makes them more dangerous than uneducated people. Today, Nigeria produces graduates who cannot write simple and correct sentences; graduates who do not understand the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs.

We have graduates who do not know the place and import of prepositions in grammar; graduates who do not know the use of adjectives and adverbs; graduates who do not know the place of agreement of nouns and number; graduates who do not know the import of adjectival and adverbial clauses.

There are graduates who do not know the difference between Tropics of Cancer and Tropics of Capricorn. There are those who do not know Magellan line, that is, the line that divides the earth into two.

There are many graduates who do not know the distance between the earth and where the rain starts to fall. There are also those who do not know why we have day and night or the difference between Neap or High Tide or the fact that what is called heaven consists of billions of stars and different planets.

“Whereas our towns will only be better if we have quality education, our nation will be better if we have quality education, and the world will be better if we all have quality education,” he said.

Lol what is this undecided

English proficiency isn't education. It is just one out of many very useful languages.
If you aren't a journalist, editor or an english academic, it is perfectly understandable that your knowledge of the language is common and not exceptionally professional. Just be able to write and communicate effectively without gaffing.

If I am not wrong, folks studying language still study adjectives, adverbs into their postgraduate levels.

As for geography. Perhaps I was taught about tropics of cancer, capricorn in secondary school, and my brain has simply relegated that information or it wasn't relatable enough to remember. But I find it funny the suggestion that inability to remember some topic in geography makes my entire education 'dangerous'.

If I rolled out an on the spot test in SSCE Biology, many of today's lecturers (including the OP) who aren't within the sciences would fail it woefully. And accessors would still agree I never crossed into higher education biology with the test.

E je ki awa guided o.

Re: Afe Babalola: 'Nigerian Graduates Are More Dangerous Than Illiterates' by anungangampu:
So correct. Half baked education is dangerous than illiteracy. It's better a man know he is mentally lacking and seek for advancement, than when a man is acclaimed to be advanced but deeply inept seeking for higher position to control others.

But then proficiency in English language is not a general acceptance of literacy. It just what it is "Being good in English". In as much it takes discipline to be good in understanding this rules of English language but then there are other academics one can excel in without being expert in English communication. Being proficient in English language is mainly for literary appreciation.

Chinese has over time thought us we can advance and copy English technology without becoming English expert. We just need to modify the way we pass information in a formal setting and also work on separating the old dogma of "if it's not excellent English, it cant be intelligent".
