Thanks to all well-meaning Lagosians/Omoluabis that have commented so far. May God continue to strenghten us. To the topic, the lgas cda have a big role to play in all these. They are appointed to ensure the development of their immediate envirnment, a role which they should know includes disallowing or fingering out shanties and illegal housing before they gathered up. That all these happen under their nose is a big question mark on if they are adequately aware of all their roles. Its time Lagos stood up to wipe out the mess of the past era. Shanties and illegal structures are forbidden and anybody should only be a part of the decay at his and his properties detriment. Kudos to Lagos on this. Lagos must be great by force. Eko O ni baje o. Aa tunbo maa dara si ni. |

PHAYOL81:Exactly. Some are not doing their jobs or are clearly compromised by corruption. How do whole communities of shanty develop and remain in place over time? Not possible where planning consent officers and government town planning officers do their job properly. |

If you know you can not afford a standard living in Lagos pls go to hell or back to your village where your generation are from, don't come to Lagos State and hide inside one slum and think you live in Lagos, let embrace 21st century with decent living and approach. |
| Re: Lagos Demolishes Monkey Village, Residents Displaced by Nobody: 12:11pm On Jan 02, 2021 |
Jaqenhghar:It would look less of a shithole if relevant departments of Lagos States administration did their jobs efficiently and effectively. Corruption is a big issue. The governor cannot do everything. |

mywells:This is the undiluted truth some like to play ethnic and rich/poor social status politics with. Much like the very difficult problem of trying to tell poor Nigerians to stop having far more kids than they can ever provide for or raise properly. Truth is that not everyone should live or seek to live in Lagos. Same challenges exist worldwide and people respond pragmatically by looking at themselves first and doing the responsible thing pertaining to their personal situation. I have a friend who has just moved from London, UK, to Birmingham which is over 100 miles from his former London home because he could not afford to live in London anymore once his wife and two kids came to join him from Nigeria. By making that responsible decision they now have a three bedroom family home whereas they would struggle to rent even a studio apartment in London for similar money. Would a Nigerian living in Lagos take such a responsible decision? No. Many would rather live in illegal structures to then be blaming the "elitist" governor and his "government for the rich alone" policy. Nigeria is tiring ojare my brother. Happy new year. |

lordmans:Thank you brother. I have lived in Lagos all my life and love the State. Of course others should love their States also and wish/work for her best interest. Truth is that Lagos cannot and should not accommodate so many Nigerians. Over 20 million people cramped into the smallest State in Nigeria. It is unfeasible for Lagos to keep accepting unchecked influx of people into the State daily. Self-destructive in the long term for Lagos. Lagos State should be decongested asap. With policies put in place to check uncontrolled migration into the State from all across Nigeria. I am not one of those Yorubas to foolishly blame non-Yorubas only. In fact I see the problem of Lagos to be a problem of her own success and good administration in comparison to that of her fellow and surrounding Yoruba States. I think other Governors of SW States should do more to develop their States so that people can remain in their State of origin once most of their needs are met in those States rather than head to Lagos to seek everything. |

Foolishbuhari:That's quite true though. But in all and in all, it's for the growth of the place, twin, city and state too, we can't expect Lagos to be like New York without all these things taking place at the expense of some people though the government would certainly not be helping them, but I just hope that they would. And as you know, also in the movie Bleep 2, with Ice Cube as Lead Actor, they made a quote by Jefferson Jackson that " The Tree of liberty will continually be refreshed with the blood of Patriots and Tyrants too " . Just pray to be lucy enough to be the enjoyer of the liberty and not the refresher. Hope you can relate. |

sisisioge:Do you know Agbaoku street, next to the old TFC opposite Chrisland? Monkey village is at the end of the estate. It was cordoned off last year so the ghetto inhabitants won't have access through the estate anymore. Majority of the artisans, street hawkers you see around Opebi and Allen and some of those Pekas girls live there. |

mywells:It's not only new arrivals in Lagos that live in shanties. Some people fell on hard times, others are rendered homeless by circumstance and move to these slums because it's all they can afford. One despatch rider in a place I used to work lived in a shanty, was going to polytechnic at weekends and had a wife and child. He eventually took office loan and got a room in a better hood near satellite town |
