A very lovely Thursday to you all.

I was recently given a 6 months contract by SFH to work as a finance assistant of a project with a salary of N125,000 per month (subject to 5% withholding tax) and I currently work as an accountant for a private school which salary is N70,000 per month.

Is it advisable that I leave my current work of N70,000 per month and go for the contract offer with SFH or I should just reject the contract offer and continue with my present place of work?

Plz anyone?

both salaries are nothing in the nigeria of today.... sadly....

Okay first and foremost, do you deduct and remit your income tax (PAYE) from the school you currently work for to the SIRS? If yes, then your net salary is roughly #66,673.33.

Your take home pay from SFH will be #115,500 and tax burden only #9,500 since you made no mention of Pension, NHF, NHIS, Life Assurance, Gratuity which could all act as relief in reducing your monthly tax burden. The difference in pay should easily cover 4-5 months of been out of a job if things go south with SFH.

Secondly, Short-term NGO contracts are tricky, anything 3-6 months means you’re obviously covering for someone on leave or they are looking to fill an urgent gap. Good thing is, this is January and contracts in my experience are usually for 12 months, so if you have a plug at Society for Family Health - you can put the question to the SFAO who you’d report to in the end anyway, ask him/her the project’s duration - this will give you an idea of contract renewal after the initial 6 months (your performance with regards to financial reporting and filing and documenting retirements will be key here).

Meanwhile, I personally love new challenges, so I’ll advise you to jump ship immediately grin of course, within the school policy’s notice period for resignation or termination. Refer to your letter of engagement or contract (usually 2-4 weeks or refund of the equivalent of 1 month salary).

Not for Profit accounting, will help your career growth in ways you can only imagine - there are loads of trainings, conferences to ensure your understanding of GAAP is top notch. So brush up on your Accounting for NGOs - basically just Income and Expenditure. Taxation is usually just income tax and WHT since NGOs are exempted from VAT. Your SFAO will put you on procurements immediately because that’s the core of what SFH does.

Finally, my guy, if you’re willing to stick your neck out, take the plunge and I’d always be here to walk you through any challenge you may face along this new journey.

Cheers

Take the SFH JOB,

There is a possibility of renewal and even if not, your NGO experience with SFH will make you more eligible for other NGO jobs.

If you can avoid resigning from your school, maybe tell them you are going for a course. That way, you can come back to your school if your contract is not extended.

So me I no swear for you o. But I wait for six to eight months time after you are through with your six months contracts then you realize that people plenty wey get experience with ngos wey even plenty pass your six months experience.

On the contrary, if like footballers, the school fit send you on six months loan, no qualms, Sfh all the way. If also you have a clear cut plan and path for what to do after six months expires, sfh all the way. But if it’s back to job hunting, think am well o. Enough qualified people Dey street wey Dey find work.

Best of luck,

Quick, quick, take it. The SFH offer. What are you waiting for? God has just opened doors for you.

NGO's are the new oil companies. They always want NGO experienve before they give you a role. How they even gave you that job as a primary school acct i dont even understand.

Once you have that experience on your CV, you have launched your NGO career. You van never look for jobs. Before 6months is over, you will get another offer, 250k and from.there 500k..and you are on the fly.

Dont be dumb.

Pray for guidance.

For me, I'll say take the contract job as theres no security in a private school job. You can always get a school job afterwards since you already have experience in that field.

Like someone suggested, you can apply for a 6 months study leave. After which you can resume back your job but If they refuse, then work towards getting another job after the contract.

My question is "Are the location of this jobs in the same city?"

If yes.

Then, You know many people at the top in the school where you work. Romance those people so they can give you a little leave, then take up this NGO job.

NGO jobs are not time consuming, meaning you can be alternating between jobs. Go here today, go there tomorrow. In a week, two days here, three days there.

Thank me later

A bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush!

And to break this idiom down for you,
It means ( it is better to hold onto something one has than to risk losing it by trying to get something better!)

But at the end of it all, the FINAL decision is up to you.

Goodluck.

We Rise!

No one who has ever been exceptional lived by this. Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith to get something great.

Mr man, take the contract work with this in mind
125k-70k is 55k
Times by 6=330k
Divide by 70=4.7
You have 4.7months paying yourself from the remains of the SFH salary to get something doing and find something better than the former or similar to the former
Nothing is ever guaranteed so take the calculated risk bikonu
When you take the job make sure you don't touch the 55k balance monthly, that will be your pay for your search later on,I hope you get me
You'd be improving your CV by taking it

It's a common dilemma; high income, low security or low income, high security?

The answer depends on your age, your past experience, the number of dependants, how aggressive you are in searching for new jobs and how well you are connected; and very importantly, what your own risk appetite is. Someone with a high risk appetite will go for the high paying job and use the higher savings to establish an alternative source of income for when the contract is terminated. Someone with a lower risk appetite will prefer to stay put where he is and take low pay in exchange for peace of mind knowing that he will be able to bring home the bacon for the next few months at least.

Those are the options and the factors. I know that this is not what you want (you probably want us to tick A or B for you), but nobody knows tomorrow, just like you. And no one knows your situation better than yourself. Sit down and think about it very well and form your own life decisions. This is too important to bring to a vote on NL.

Good luck.

I got a 6months contract job for a SFH project in 2016, I resigned from my previous 1 man business job, relocated to Lagos because of that job. The contract got renewed for another 6mnths after the first. so I worked there for one year before the project got temporarily cancelled. But the experience alone open doors for other NGO jobs. Although I ended up switching fields to tech. So OP don't play with NGOs oh. Your experience there can propel you to working for Danish refugee council or Norwegian refugee. I will advise you take it.
