A 48-year-old Nigerian identified as Joseph Olajide Akeredolu has been arrested in India for duping a diamond broker from south Mumbai of Rs 1.16 crore or $217,000.

The police said Akeredolu is part of a gang that creates fake accounts on social media, approaches people through these accounts and then dupes them under the pretext of sending gifts.

According to the Indian Express, the gang approached the diamond broker, a resident of Girgaon who has an office at Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC, on Instagram on October 10, last year.

The profile was created under the name of a woman, Alex Zendra, said police, adding that the accused claimed to be a captain at a ship in the United Kingdom.

“We started chatting on WhatsApp and after a few days, Zendra told me that she loves me and wanted to marry me. She aspired to start a business with me in Mumbai…

“On October 17, she sent me a video in which she showed branded shoes, gold chains, watches and US dollars and said that she is sending them for me,” the broker said in his statement to the police.

While he was awaiting the parcel, the broker received a call from a woman posing as a custom official.

She told him that the parcel has been seized at the airport and the broker has to pay money to get it released. He ended up transferring Rs 1.16 crore to multiple bank account numbers.

Amid this, the broker also visited New Delhi, where he met a man – who also posed as a customs official – who showed him the US dollars that had been seized from the parcel.

Later, sensing something amiss, the broker approached the VP Road police station, where a case of cheating under Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act was registered.

During probe, the police found out that Akeredolu is based in Delhi.

He was brought to Mumbai on Wednesday and arrested.

He was produced in court, which has remanded him in police custody.

The police have seized several cellphones and fake US dollars from him, the report stated.

Instead of Olajide Akeredolu to stay in Ibadan or Ogun state and hustle hard, he decided to travel to India to indulge in fraud.

Olajide Akeredolu is a disgrace to Amotekun group.

So many Yorubas are abroad doing fraud. Infact, that is how they survive but they rarely catch them.
So many Igbos are abroad doing drugs trafficking and they mostly catch them.
Nigerians say no to crime abroad. You're spoiling opportunities for good guys who want to travel for genuine hustle.

see how they will avoid this thread bc na their brother. very hypocritical set of people!

Let it be an ipob that committed this heinous crime, the page would av been pursing 15 by now.

But the Igbos are matured and understand the fact that crime has no ethnicity and therefore wouldn't leave their busy schedule to come ridicule another tribe over crime.

It's easier catching someone with drugs than someone involved in cyber fraud... white substance deals always fetch far more money, but it's a high risk high reward odd so that's why lots of Igbos rather take the risk for the higher reward.

India! A country where going to jail is inevitable, where tomorrow isn’t certain, where any wrong movement can get you behind bars for years.

A country where caesarean section is more advised than normal delivery by doctors

I escaped going to jail in 2016 because because I was pacifying my son.

My friends that were arrested were in prison for about 4 years.

Hmmm. That look, that kind of yellow skin tone and then I matched it with the name , it immediately reminded me of those years a friend who I know is not Yoruba calls himself Kayode(a Yoruba name) in SA.
He told me it is because there is a general local perception in S.A. that people originally from his place in Nigeria are into drugs and related crimes. He is not into crime, a perfectly upright IT professional, and wanted to avoid such label so adopted Kayode as his name.

This was as far back as 2006 or so.

Crime is bad.It is not peculiar to a race, culture or religion.
No matter how cool they make it look when they flaunt their illgotten wealth, please don't join them.
