Nigerian govt to impose fresh nationwide lockdown as COVID-19 cases continue to rise

The Federal Government has said it will be left with no option than to impose a fresh lockdown in the country if the number of COVID-19 infections continues to spike.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVIF-19, Sani Aliyu, stated this on Friday during a media briefing in Abuja.

Aliyu said the rising Coronavirus infections was a source of concern and might require a fresh lockdown.

He said, “If these numbers continue to go up and we start having significant deaths, we will have no option. If we do not want to lock down, now is the time to make sure that we follow the non-pharmaceutical interventions.”

Also, the PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who spoke earlier, said, “The Presidential Task Force is very concerned about the increasing daily numbers that we are recording.

“On the 6th of January 2021, we recorded 1,664 infections. This is yet another all-time high in Nigerian and we must all take full responsibility through compliance and vigilance.”

Second wave: No fresh lockdown, Lai Mohammed insists

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Monday, insisted that the Federal Government has no plan to impose a fresh lockdown on Nigeria as the country battles the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mohammed, who spoke at a conference in Lagos, however, appealed to Nigerians to adhere to all protocols outlined by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

The minister said, “On the issue of lockdown, I don’t think there is any time when the Federal Government has said it is going to have a second lockdown. However, the Federal Government is very unhappy that Nigerians are not adhering to the basic Covid-19 protocols of wearing face masks, or practicising social distancing, of washing hands, of ensuring that they do gather in large numbers.

“If we do not do these, the surge will continue and with the new strain of Covid-19 which is becoming much more difficult to handle than the old strain, the Federal Government will continue to insist and encourage Nigerians to please obey the Covid-19 protocols.

“The Federal Government is aware of the economic and social implications of a second lockdown but we want to call on Nigerians to help us, help themselves and help the economy, by adhering strictly to the Covid-19 protocols.”

lock down without to real palliatives to go round.....then they should be ready for mass protest cos with what people saw how palliatives were stach in various warehouses it will be very difficult to ask anyone to stay at home!

Big fear dey grip this people now o, they know for sure the youths have found their voice, hence the back and forthe movement in decision taking.

But ehn, whether the situation report for corona in Nigeria is as bad as it's being proclaimed or not, there's one thing I know so well, the government has to REALLY make provision for the welfare of the masses during the course of the lockdown, else there will be serious gbege.
