If you read through this thread with an unbiased mind, you will see why Nigerians usually need to have extractions eventually. Poor dental health awareness, some are even boasting about using herbs and broken down teeth that no longer hurt and one aunty was talking about removing worms.

Many Nigerians don't like dental clinics for several reasons, many opt for herbs, people put petrol, aspirin, garlic and just yesterday I saw someone that put aboniki- yes aboniki in a painful tooth (and no, it didn't get better)

Now root canal treatments are expensive, the cost ranges from 15,000-50,000 for one tooth and usually such teeth need to be crowned so they don't break later (a good porcelain fused to metal crown costs 35,000 and above even in Government hospitals)

Tha brings the total amount for saving a tooth to about 50,000- 85,000 instead of an extraction that usually costs 5,000- 15,000 and up to 50,000 for impacted teeth.

Please ask yourself, how many Nigerians can afford such?

Many Nigerians argue about opening cards (just 1,500-2,000 o)

Root canals pay the dentist financially, don't you think they would be more interested in doing them?

The way some of you think ehn, using Nairaland as a study on the average Nigerian, it makes one almost lose hope in this country as even we the youths are not helping matters.

You would expect someone misinformed or poorly informed to try to inform themselves, Google is there after all but no, not my people.

By the way, this year 2021, take better care of your mouths, see a dentist once in a while (prevention and early care save teeth- and lives), learn to brush properly as poor brushing techniques and hard bristled brushes wear the teeth down, less carbonated and sugary drinks and foods too.

Not all teeth can be restored, I wonder if you would be brave enough to take a picture of the tooth in question and post here.

If you had gone to the clinic early enough, before you started having pain from the tooth, you could have filled it- and for only 5,000- 10,000, no pain and the procedure is barely 15 minutes.

I have had a filling in my upper left last molar since 2016, I noticed it was always sensitive while brushing. I had it filled, I check it constantly, I have my teeth cleaned regularly too and I haven't had any issues since.

If you are also not satisfied with the care you received, you can seek a second opinion- more opinions even. If you also have enough money and are willing to take a bet on that tooth, I am sure you may find a dentist that may help out (a Teaching Hospital maybe)

My daughter's case was handled better and satisfactorily in a state owned hospital. Many Nigerians wouldn't seek professional help in time, they would have used this and that to destroy the teeth roots before going to the right place for help. That also includes eye problem

It is either they were not properly done or the positions of those holes are complicating things, especially if they are at the edge of the tooth or the holes are quite large.

Please see your dentist, it was done just three months ago and they are already out- you may not need to pay again.

Or get a second opinion.

You may also need to get permanent dental crowns after they are well filled the next time, they are pricey but with that you may have some peace of mind.

Please don't wait too long so the teeth won't start hurting and you may now need extractions or root canal therapies, biko

Dentists all around the world suggest extractions and not just the Nigerian ones. Abroad, it's for the $$$. I don't know about those in naija.

I don't understand this post. Dentists services are NOT covered by government health care plan in Canada. It may be covered under an employer benefit plan. I am guessing the lady is covered under her work plan similar to what we call HMO in Nigeria.

Why are u not a dentist? Root canal is done when it is advisable to do and extraction when it is advisable to do.
I followed such stupid complain of yours one time and insisted on root canal when the dentist advised extraction. When i experienced unimaginable pains later, nobody told me to go and tell the dentist to remove the tooth.
All this i too know. If you know that root canal is the best, why dont you do it to yourself at home instead of go to seek for a dentist's opinion?

I use to think that way too until I got a fish bone stuck in my tooth/gum and the pain was unbearable. This was in my university days in Nigeria. I got to the university dental clinic and there were literally 400 patients waiting for care. I got there around 8am and did not get to my turn until about 4.30.pm. Na that day I no say dentists dey work lol

Here I am, currently battling with multiple RCT patients and people are here yapping balls, saying it's only extraction we were taught in school.

There are alot of factors to consider before opting for a root canal treatment.
They are
1. Cost: Root canal is not a cheap procedure and after its completion the tooth needs to be crowned(capped). This ideally in a govt hospital cost nothing less than 50k in Nigeria. Also it requires multiple visits.
2. Availability of equipment: Some centers don't have x-ray machines and an ideal root canal treatment requires minimum of four x-rays. This may make it impossible to carry out.
3. Tooth health status: Not all teeth are restorable. Many are badly broken down so much that the prognosis for a root canal treatment may be very poor.
4. Tooth support: the bony support for a tooth may be inadequate to hold a tooth and root canal may not be feasible......



Listen,I am a uniben trained dentist currently working in England and I can tell you I know many of our Nigerian dentists working with the NHS here and doing very well.

I extracted my teeth sometime last year. TWO in one day.. It wasn't a pleasant experience.. na small remain I for faint that day.. I really hope I don't have teeth issues/pain again in my life.

I'm weary of dentists. They get paid based on the procedures they do.

Some scam the patients and recommend unnecessary procedures. Always get a 2nd opinion.
