Ok, so let me tell you this straight up. It depends on the kind of person you are. By that I mean are you smart or just average as a person?

Just so you know, I finished with 3rd class for other reasons than my level of intelligence. It made me feel bad because I knew I was way better than what my certificate was showing and telling about me. So what did I do?

As soon as I finished youth service and got a job in a "small company" after some series of tests, the most pressing thing on my mind was Masters. So I did my PGD first and immediately after that my Master programme while working.

By the way, the "small company" I started with was one of the telecommunications companies. After that I worked for a transport company. And now I am building my own company.

So you see? Good certificate is great. But more than that, what kind of person are you? A quitter or a born winner who doesn't take no for an answer. I could have blamed my lectures, my school or even myself. But I am not that kind of person. If it had taken me ten trials to get my PGD and Masters, believe me I wasn't ready to stop until I got it.

Challenges wanted to tell me I wasn't good enough, I knew who I was and proved it WRONG.

First and foremost I am a 2.2 graduate. But from what I have seen so far, I have come to discover that job adverts specifically give preference to first class and 2.1 graduates and very few give room for 2.2 applicants. And I am yet to see any job specification that includes graduates of third class degree.

Now someone with a third class degree can only do masters after completion of a postgraduate diploma. However, job advertisements for lecturing positions still lay emphasis on minimum of 2.2 for lecturing positions. So a third class degree applicant who has masters and PhD still doesn't stand a chance as compared to first and 2.1 or 2.2 applicants.

So my question is, what is the way forward for third class graduates, should they abandon the degree and enrol for another first degree? Or universities should abolish the award of third class degrees to graduates.

In my own opinion, students who have poor grades that will eventually earn them a third class degree should be given some form of remedial programmes for a year or two which will attract additional fees so they can have opportunity to boost their grades and at least earn a 2.2 upon graduation. Just my opinion!

Please feel free to make your contributions as well. There are a lot of third class degree holders out there who are really frustrated and would want some advice on what to do!

We are limitless, as a matter of fact my younger brother graduated with 3rd class grade at UNEC where he studied Radiographer (medical imaging) .

A month after he concluded his internship, he applied for HCPC and got registered within the same year, he applied for jobs and got two job offers in Uk..Today he is cashing out big in overseas.
While my elder bro that came out with First Class is still struggling!

I never looked for 2.1 or 4.5. I don't want to enslave myself to books. First class is for administrative and social science courses.
My 2.2 is ok for me. My department has NEVER produced a first class in the history of my school and nobody is looking for it. Imagine a department with a population of 18 students and a professor will tell U that U guys are overpopulated. You must go grey.

So my point is, if you think my 2.2 is not good enough, engage me in an interview or a job in my field. Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Commission can testify.

As a third class graduate u can achieve a lot. Its just for you to believe in yourself and understand what u want. The certificate is only a document. It doesn't write your future. I know someone who graduated with a third class some years ago and now heads a department in a bank.

I graduated with a 2.1 but started learning how to code in my University days just be reading programing books and practicing.
My company have never requested from my grade of degree and I have both local and International experience. Also worked with some of the best IT companies in the world. So just maintain your focus and work hard. Paper sometimes doesn't define our destiny

You can apply for masters in some select universities in the UK, that is if you want to do a post graduate degree. Do your findings on schools who have their minimum requirements set to a 3rd. I think UCLAN, and the uni at Bolton are amongst them. All the best.

Infact he was employed from Nigeria here....

In engineering ,Experience Matters,try gather Experience even If its a small company ,gather skills ,Nobody Cares about what you come Out with but what you can do.get some certifications to Back your certificate.start with small company and then move in.if u have Money ,Go abroad for Fürther

please give more details, as this information would go a long way to liberate popular opinion that 3rd class is as good as a dead sentence

I am telling you the fact, you can make enquires about it. Under normal academic certain someone with 2.1 in his first degree will be considered/ favoured first than someone with 2.2,or 3rd class with masters, in times of lecturing job in any public universities in Nigeria under NORMAL Situation ( without influence from anyone ).

I graduated with a 3rd class in Mechanical Engineering and I must confess that it is somehow tough getting a job couple with the fact that the age grade for jobs is 26years with 2.1

I am currently doing my PGD in Info Tech where I think I can have an higher chance at nailing a bigger pay job.

But I have equipped myself with different certificates, so it comes handy as back up for my grade.

I pray I nail that big pay job because if hard work equals money, I should have been a Billionaire by now..

All in all, never give up and trust in God.

Either of two things: 1) you should accept it as a failure and end up as an Uber driver/private school teacher or 2) you fire up and become the likes of Prof Wole Soyinka, the sage- Gani Fahinmi, Aliko Dangote etc. Either way, the choice is your's.
