America And Canada Not As Advertised by pauljustina(f): 4:33pm On Jan 13, 2021
I remember when i was so little i aspire and long to be in the U.S, Canada or U.K. The aspiration was borne out of what i hear, see, and observed from friends, neighbors and TV.
In those days, i would hear story of someone who grew up in Nigeria, travel abroad and is an engineer who lives abroad. I will hear my dad will say "omo lagbaja nie" or "Jide ni yen, omo Brother Odumosu ilu oyinbo lon gbe ni America" meaning: Thats the son of that man, or thats Jide the son of Brother Odumosu who lives abroad in America.

Considering we are of low class economically, those dreams were clear but actualizing it has no path in the dream. Whenever my dad talks about someone he knows, i would try to get close to that person so i could get foreign
phone numbers, so i could tell my friends of low economy class that my uncle or aunt lives abroad and here is his or her number.

Associating with people that comes from
America, Canada and U.K its like the best thing that could ever happen to me those days. Until i finish secondary school and the need to make my dreams come through.. Long story cut short, i found myself in America.

My first day in America was a terrible
experience that i could compare to a girl
brought down to Lagos to work as house-help for a rich man but whose accommodation is restricted to sleep in a big wide living room.

"Wow this is a big house, big parlor, TV, AC, dishes not aluminum bows are used in the kitchen, tiled floor not untiled floor"

Yes she feels exposed cos the house is so cold and no blanket, her cloths used as headrest and i bet you, the first night she will wake before anybody and ask so much questions with herself.. two major thoughts will bugging her, should i run
back to my village or should i stay.. That's the first day experience in America or any part of the world on the first day, depending on how you got there.

If you are a director, Dr, Lawyer graduated from Nigeria university, be ready to do laborer's job. You will first start from the ground, like factory work, call center work, group home work, personal care assistance(helping disable
people), work in store for that minimum pay. Your way out of these is to forget what you studied or became in Nigeria and start all over again. Go back for 6month program, 2 years
college or 4 years or take prep exams for
professional like Dr and lawyer will have to go to another 3 years of law schools.

At the end, you can never become the top inyour professional, especially when you have to deal with all kinds of discrimination, racism and accent differentials. Once you start you start
seeing that everything screwed against you... But the naija spirit in you will not want to take
last.. When face with rejection, experience setback, you think about home, friends who are hailing you that your life is better and you are probably
in money, what will be of you if you dont push on. These thoughts are motivation to push on and many of us did.

Then you start thinking about paper, school, work, money and people at home.. your worries become endless all in the name of running away from Nigeria and finding greener pasture or American dream.

At the end.. you will quickly find out that,
America is not as advertised...
The people that suffer most are those that sold their property to get to America, in the believe they will one day build back that house they sold, buy another car and some even take millions in life savings and end up forever broke.

Perpetual failure: Never to recover
If God wants to punish you, you will get to
America with no paper and go marry akata or have one k-leg with your paper.. That's the beginning of un-ending circular, redundant spirals fall for life. If DHS send you that letter that says your marriage is sham, forget you ever
came to America, just pack your load, run to another country or come back home.. cos you will never win the case with DHS.

If you commit any felonious crime you are gone or even misdemeanor that takes you to jail for 6 months no way for you to get paper. The America don't forget or forgive, just like the internet. Whatever you do from the day you enter their soil is recorded.

You hit woman, deliberately kill any live animals (dog, cat, birds etc)except insects you could end up in jail.
Don't be deceived everyone is indebted
Everyone here are indebted one way or the other.. Credit card debt, house rent or mortgage, car note.. the system is design to reduced lazy people, keep the people indebted so they have no option but go to work.

When you are sick you can't afford not to be at work, when you have emergency you have to show up to work because that source of income could be blocked by your boss when he or she fires you.

If you are pregnant, you have to come to work until maybe a week before delivery and you have to submit doctors note and after delivery you might not have 30days before you return..

Deception: fake it until you make it

Many of the people you see on Facebook,
Instagram and other social medial acting like they live large, you are likely richer than them if you are in Nigeria with no debt, and have your own house with N1millon naira in your account.

The car they drive its borrowed if they lose two payment the car dealers will come for their car; if they don't pay their mortgage they loose their house. So the life is elusive.

What the OP posted is 100% fact!It takes one to four years to get yourself established, as a new immigrant.

When you arrive in Canada you can only get blue collar jobs such as cashier, bus driver, labourer at warehouse and sales associate jobs that pay minimum or slightly above the minimum wage.

You either have to go back to school for for at least a year or do all your certifications again if you're in accounting, medical, engineering or law field. It pays off in the long-term though and even if your a bus driver your standard of living is better than majority of people in Nigeria.

America and Canada is still a better choice than Nigeria any day. I have lived in Canada for the last 12 years, however, when I went to visit America ion my last two visits is when I realized the reason it is regarded as the greatest country in the world.

Coming back to Nigeria after a long absence is a visit to the prehistoric times. The level of underdevelopment is really appalling and I wonder why I never noticed it throughout my secondary school days.

Bro, speak for yourself. Some people have these certifications before landing in Canada and they got solid jobs. You sound like it applies to all.

You are referring to the 1% and can check Linkedin if you doubt what I am saying. How do get your CPA certification or licence to practice medicine in Canada when you have never written their professional exams? The road to practice medicine is another 3-4 years for new immigrants. However, for the accounting designation you only have to write the final exam.

You think you can just walk into Shell Canada,Accenture,Microsoft etc when locals that schooled here and have Canadian experience are applying for the same jobs? You only have an edge if you worked for their subsidiaries in Nigeria.

I understand what you're trying to say. Maybe a better word would have been Majority. Once you have ACCA you can easily convert to CPA. I know many IT professionals that didn't really struggle to land a job. In all, migration is not easy and there is nothing bad in doing blue collar job for a while.

I have done blue collar jobs and it is honestly the most depressing thing you can do, when you have the skills and qualifications to get a white collar bob. It is all part of the immigrant hustle as you work your way to a white collar job.

You can convert ACCA to CPA once you pass the Common Final Examination(CFE), you don't have to enrol in all the capstone and core courses.

These cashiers bus drivers and labourers are living a far more dignified life than even bank marketers in Nigeria. Having a blue collar job abroad should never be a thing to shame people for .. more honourable than being jobless in Nigeria playing bet9ja like millions of youths are doing right now..
@OP enough of shaming hard working people. There is dignity in labour.
Not everyone will make it to the "top" abroad and that's ok as most will never make it in Nigeria either.... Relocating abroad is not a "get rich quick" scheme..

I am not shaming blue collar jobs, I did several myself. It is a lot of hard work and you earn every cent they pay you for your time.

There are blue collar workers such as plumbers, gas plant operators, truck drivers, welders etc that make more money than white collar workers. However, after a certain age it really takes a physical toll on you.

It was exhausting when I worked blue collar jobs even when I was in my 20's.
