Kwame Nkrumah disliked the Balewa government and supported the more progessive politicians in Nigeria like Chief Awolowo, Aminu Kano and Tarka. When the coup failed, he gave refuge to Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna and allowed him to stay in exile in Ghana.
Alas, Nkrumah himself was overthrown barely 30 days later and Ifeajuna was sent back to Nigeria by Ghana's new military government.

Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna was executed along with Major Victor Banjo on September 22, 1967 by the Biafrian government of Colonel Ojukwu for allegedly trying to overthrow Colonel Ojukwu.
An extremely brilliant officer, Banjo had successfully led Biafrian forces to capture Benin City and got all the way to Ore in present day Ondo State. They would have proceeded to Ibadan and captured the Western Region.

Very correct o. Coups by Generals are more successful.Orkar's coup might have worked if not that they were all very high on cocaine and failed to seize Abacha who mobilised and countered

Not Necessarily so. Generals and Top Military Officers have been known to plan coups and failed. Eg the Dimka failed Coup involved Major Gen. I.D Bissallah.
There are some Tactical Units very essential to be securer for a Coup to succeed. Most coups that failed were largely due to failure to capture and secure these units.
The Armoured Artillery in Lagos and Ibadan were very essential then during the Military coup eras.
While the Dimkas Coup was the worst and most poorly planned and executed coup in the history of Nigeria hence it failed, the Gideon Orkar coup was almost bound to fail due to its planned excising of some parts of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria.
However, both coups failed to secure Armoured Artilleries hence both coups gave the ruling Military govt to leverage on these Armoured Artilleries to fight back and overpower them.

Akintola fought back with a gun, the Sardauna equally fought back with a gun; but the gentleman Prime Minister did not. His death was in my opinion uncalled for. He was one of the first arrested and he cooperated.

From The Police Special Branch Report

The time was about 0400 hrs. Major Ifeajuna drove away on to the Abeokuta road. On the way they stopped and Ifeajuna asked the PM out of the car whence he shot and killed him. When he and Okafor became certain that the PM was dead they left the body in the bush at a point beyond Otta on the Lagos to Abeokuta road. They then opened the boot of the car and dropped the body of Lt. Col. Largema near that of the PM. They then drove on to Abeokuta. On the way after Abeokuta two other soldiers in the car were dropped and told to find their way back to Lagos whilst Ifeajuna and Okafor proceeded to Enugu. They arrived Enugu at about 1415 hours and proceeded to the Premier's Lodge where they held discussion with Dr. MI Okpara, then Premier of Eastern region, after which they separated and went into hiding. Ifeajuna eventually escaped to Ghana where he was received by the former President Kwame Nkrumah who sent him to Winneba to stay with SG Ikoku.

So they held a discussion with okpara without harming any of his family or staff

But shodeinde wife was shot at multiple times...

They celebration you mentioned in the north were by Igbos who mock the Northerners ... And that was lead to the killing of Igbos in the north after the second coup....

.There is way to twist this.....
The coup was an Igbo coup ...

And do you 100% believe everything the coup plotters say...

The coup itself was to prevent greater evil. If they were more mature I am sure they wouldn't have killed people. They were just boys at the end of the day

I won't totally agree with you on your last point.
Major Nzeogwu and many of the coupists were some of the finest and best trained Military Personnel there was then.
These were Sandhurst groom officers, and any officer trained in Sandhurst were the most intelligent officers.
So even though they were young, they are very sound and knew their onions.
Perhaps, I would say they were (especially Nzeogwu) was driven by radicalism ideologies. Nzeogwu was said to be strong Marxist in his reasoning. This ideology might have influenced the violent niche the coup witnessed.
I agree with you that the coup might have prevented a greater evil, but it was characterised by gory ethnic bloodshed which was the low point of the coup.

Indeed. So also what is revealed below as per casualties of the coup. The murderous bigot Nzeogwu went ahead to kill his Yoruba accomplice to show what would have happened to every token non-Igbo these supremacist murderers managed to coopt into their deception.

Today the narrative is that the mainly Igbo conspirators were 'Nigerian patriots' who wanted to free Awolowo and place him in charge of Nigeria. Big joke.

If we really get into this then Igbos will regret this their modern day attempt to keep revising history fraudulently so they are seen as 'misunderstood victims' rather than the intentional, callous and murderous bigots and supremacists they were and always will be.

History is replete with utterances by famous Igbos, like Azikiwe, where they purport it is their god-anointed right to lead all others. Azikiwe declared this unequivocally and we even see this throwback behaviour till today with delusional Igbos claiming "only an Igbo can make Nigeria great" as the best sales pitch they have for gaining the Presidency in 2023. laughable.

Look at the reception they gave the thief Kalu upon his release from prison recently. The same Igbos who demonize Tinubu daily are talking up Kalu's Presidential challenge by saying he is "an Igbo well-supported throughout Nigeria".

That he is corrupt and that he did absolutely nothing for Abia State is no concern to them. Just a parochial hijack of the Presidency by their kinsman, even if a very devilish and worthless one at that, is all that matters.

Peter Obi they tout as the" best" Presidential material is a political prostitute who has never built and elevated any political platform or individual to higher standing.

All he does is jump and abandon ship to go and profit elsewhere when the going gets tough. Ditto Kalu, Umahi and virtually every Igbo leader.

Contrast with Tinubu who stays the course, regardless of what is at risk and any intimidation he faces, to build great political platforms, leaders and the best State in Nigeria by far

Pray tell which individual displays qualities desirable in a Nigerian President between Tinubu and the many worthless Igbos that our bigoted SE brothers and sisters support while constantly cursing and attacking BAT.

Buy Igbo people's deception, revisionism and hateful propaganda at your own risk.

No, these were young revolutionary minded men with socialist leaning. Major Ademoyega said as much in his book. Major Ifeajuna was infact a fiery Students Union leader at the University of Ibadan who led protests against the school authorities over the closure of an hostel and against the visits of the Queen to Nigeria.
But the coup lacked poor execution outside the North. Nzeogwu was a tactical officer, he did his job well and infact practiced for it for weeks under the guise of routine military practice; the others failed to properly carry out their orders. Their biggest mistake was
1) Not arresting the head of the Army: General Ironsi which allowed him rally against the coupists and also made the North think it was an Ibo coup with no blood shed in the East and no Ibo military or civilian leader killed. IT WAS NOT AN IBO COUP.
2) Unnecessary bloodshed.
you said he did his job well? Two pregnant women were killed with their unborn children, what was their offence?
Can you tell us why were the igbos rejoicing after the coup if it was not an igbo coup?
The coup was an igbo coup. Period!

Ok thank you for the explanation but lt col unegbe who was killed by the coupist is igbo . So the case of no igbo casualties in the coup is not correct

That is one lie that has always been told about the first coup, that no senior military officer of Igbo extraction was killed during the coup. What many dont know is that Lt Colonel Arthur Unegbe, a very senior officer at the time and an Igbo man, was killed.

Why even bother responding. Anyone asking the question he did is a mischief maker period because everyone knows the behaviour of Igbo.

They bay for Sanwo Olu's blood over a non-existent "massacre" in Lagos yet they make automatic excuses for Peter Obi, and his complicity, as Governor of Anambra, in the brutal and cold blooded murder of dozens of Igbos just to keep selling him as 'presidential material. Scandalous.

Same Igbos Hid their face when Wike, hitherto viewed proudly as their fellow' Igbo warrior' , brutally put down their fellow Igbos in Obigbo/Oyigbo.

They never asked Wike to resign but same biased Igbos scream daily for Osinbajo to resign because our service chiefs are still in office.

It is others who have a problem according to them. What is the point of this thread if not another attempt to push their fraudulent obsession with representing their own blatant wrongdoer in a shining light always?

100% truth about Igbos and their legendary bigotry, hypocrisy, intolerance for others and two-faced approach to life. They want political office in Lagos but cursed and swore when a Northerner born and bred in the SE "dared" to contest political office in ala Igbo.

GEJ did nothing for them but he remains their hero while Buhari, who has done more for Igbos than any other President since 1999, remains their greatest enemy.

Ojukwu led many of their fathers and grandfather's to their death needlessly to then go and insensitively/hypocritically contest a Nigerian political office. Yet "Ikemba" remains their ultimate messiah whereas Awolowo, Adekunle etal, doing their duty to their nation, are the devil's incarnate, till today, according to Igbos.

I can go on all day suffice to say fear Igbos for real.

If the 1966 coup did not happen, the state of emergency and chaos in the west would have grown out of proportion to an insurgency.

Awolowo would have probably died in prison.
The eastern economy which was the fastest growing economy in the world as at then would have transformed the east to where south Korea's economy is today or something higher.

The sarduana would have continued his unbridled March to bury the Koran in the Atlantic.

Nigeria would have generally been a much better place and country.

Lessons learnt. Igbos should mind their business even when Nigeria is on fire ,mind your business.

Igbos repeated their mistakes in the end SARS protests and the revisionist almost made it an igbo sabotaging lagos economy but for the social media

Justification of assassination of innocent people is what I deduced from here.
