Please Toyota gurus in the house, I have aToyota Sienna 2000 model which is five years old. It was shipped directly from the US with a millage of 150,000. The millage now is 170,000. My question now is when will it be appropriate to change the Timing Belt? My mechanic is advising me not to. Please I need your advice to avoid a story that touches the heart.

Na timing belt you dey take play ludo like this? You get mind o. This is one part that you should never wait for it to spoil before replacing. A broken timing belt can lead to severe engine damage in an interference engine. But lucky for you, yours is a non interference engine. Worst case is that the car will leave you stranded and you will pay some good money to have it changed if it breaks. The service interval for Sienna timing belts of that vintage is 90k miles. If it was replaced at the right mileage interval (first 99k miles) before you bought it, it will be due in another 10k miles. If I was you, I will change it now for peace of mind. I won't travel long distance with it before changing. And BTW, your van is 21 years old not 5 years grin grin

Thanks for your quick response. The 5 years I quoted was when I started usage. Thanks for once again.

Been using mine since 2014.never changed the belt but if you have the cash for original equipment manufacturer belt please do to avoid been stranded.

The major reason why your mechanic is insisting is due to the fact that most belts are fake and coupling to manufacturer spec may not be close so belt will be snapping every few months.

But with the right belt and good technician another 10years stress free loading
