You no serious. These days that 70% of an entire application is on the frontend. Like google forms and the backend is just queried when you want to save or fetch data

The OP must be a newbie to web development. What you do as a front end developer is building a skeleton, like the carcass of a car. Nothing will function without backend, they basically handle the rather complex aspect of a webpage supposing we are talking about an organizational project. If you are talking about a two or three pager or just a simple blog, then you can give front end developers the kudos they need. Such pages do not even need the work of a backend developer.

you as a customer your job is to give that ATM instruction they will follow it and you will withdraw your money...

In your ATM scenario case, backend developers are the bridge between your card issuer, and your bank e.g, backend job is to read the data on the card, translate it to what has been requested, and provide the funds. It also handles pin verification, as well as match the info on card to account owner. Those are some of the Jobs being handled by backend, not some written codes as done in frontend.

You can hire a junior FE dev try d same for a growth focus type of company and see ur work suffer, do u think DSA are for FE, backend engineers are d real software devs skilled in numerous aspects like database administration, deployment of apps, basic working networking knowledge, nice understanding of OS and VMs and containerization and orchestration tools, often skilled in DSA, design patterns, having a working knowledge of architectural, system and probably distributed systems design, this field is one that takes years on professionals work to get good at, and note all I mentioned has their own separate niches can u see how wide that is and they are called backend engineering specialist follow hussien the backend dev on YouTube and u will be shocked, LoL u think if u can write a crud app with node.js or flask, u are a backend engineer

Most times, the back end developers are requested to implement the business logic based on data coming from a database or from another connected system via an API and then the front end will call that data. I usually demand developers not to put too much business logic on the front end so that the pages can load faster.

Its just like saying why should someone that operates and treat the human brain be paid less than a person that treats the human hair. The backend comprises of the whole program logic, database and flow of the system. The frontend is simply work on the appearance of the site.

I think it is very wrong to claim that one is much more difficult than the other.
The difficulty of each depends on the project. There are some projects that embed majority of the business logic on the frontend, and there are also some projects that embed most of the business logic in the backend.

Also, don’t forget that there are some project that the backend has to service not just the frontend, but also the mobile APPs and maintain the APIs.

However, the pay depends on the skill set, your project and the importance of your role in the project.

E.g if I am building a product that needs to do lots of complex logic and data manipulation which just requires rendering on the front end, the backend would definitely be paid more.

On the other hand, if the majority of the logic is handled by the frontend, then the frontend would be paid more.

Anyone that outrightly states that one is better than the other either has no experience doing both on different projects or is too biased to agree that the dynamics of the difficulty can change.

Lol... If you are comparing frontend to backend based on just CRUD, and you feel backend is only based on CRUD, then you are ill advised my friend.

Being a backend developer, you MUST have the basics of a frontend developer, like it or not.
Yes, most applications are based on CRUD, but then, have you as a frontend developer ever wondered the amount of processing that goes on behind the scene?
Take for simple instance, a simple result processing application. Have you ever wondered the amounts of logic required to do the computation of the results behind the scene?

And yes, it is the job of the backend developer to do the coupling of the "YEYE" database, business logic and the frontend.

In many cases, especially in Nigeria where there are no boundaries, the backend developer plays a vital role in setting up the deployment environment (which I am almost sure you have no idea of). Don't worry, I am not talking about whogohost, Bluehost and the other click and upload environments. Talking managing VPS, load balancers, multitier architecture, caches, multi authentication, distributed systems, etc. As a backend developer, it is a requirement to have basic knowledge of these. Let me just stop here[

Please, don't get me wrong. I am not saying frontend is unsophisticated or easy. When you start using a lot of JavaScript and frontend frameworks like ReactJS, Angular, Vue,Ember, BackboneJS and the rest of them, frontend too get quite complex in it's own way.

But then, comparing frontend to backend, get your facts right.

Right now in the Silicon Valley, React front end pays better than backend.

But, over the past 20 years, it has slowly switched back and forth. Very long ago, front end paid better, then it slowly switched to the backend paying better and then it has been solidly in favor of frontend paying better for a few years. React has been the driver; non-React seems to pay about the same as backend.

Java backends have been around for a very long time; front frameworks have seemed to changing quicker. This seems to make it easier to cause supply shortages (leading to higher pay) for front end; employers pay higher for the few frontend devs with “the right experience”.
