Reading your post, Olatheo actually made me sad and angry.

A 2.1 Elect engr that knows what s/he is doing should not be depressed and most importantly lack the capacity to provide for his or her basic needs.

I studied Chem Engr and I can tell you with full confidence that not only is Elect engr the best engineering(has numerous and well sought-after career path)worldwide, it's also the only engineering in the whole of Nigeria that incorporates a whole lot of practicals to her 5years coursework.

What I'm trying to say is, not only should a 2.1 elect engr graduate be theoretically sound, the graduate should also possess at least 45/50% practical skills needed to fit in/adapt to any career path you choose.

Now, I think your problem is and like most 9ja graduate is short-sightedness(lack of vision and foresight) and good networking skills and mentorship.

My advice;
Go back to your drawing board/reflect on your past, and how you can improve your present and most importantly have a working/realistic plans on how you can achieve your goals(the future you want for yourself).

Well, let me cut you some slack.

You finished nysc last year and this is jan 2021 so I advice you don't fall into depression cause average Nigerians like us, we don't have the luxury to get what we want on a platter of gold, so it's understandable that we may not get job we want instantly but knowing what you want and at least 70% of the things to do to get what you want and putting in, intentional efforts to achieve what you want has no other outcome than to yield Success!!

I mean no harm, so take no offense in my comment, I'll be concluding my nysc next month and due to my vision and foresight, I have put things in motion that will aid me to achieve what I want for myself and I even have a plan B( learning a skill outside engineering that I can use to freelance on upwork).


Brother, I conclude by saying, worst-case scenario Nigeria doesn't work for you. Brush up yourself, write GRE, TOEFL, IELTS and co and apply for Msc or direct PhD to further your education abroad(The USA is not short of funding for courses like Elect and Che engineering).

To go further faster in life and be marvelously help, we need God and mentorship cause Wealth is 75% information and 25% action.

Also, note that "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest" so kill that depression in you asap.

Immediately you drop the I graduated with 2:1 and start looking for anything reasonable like teaching to start with, you may not get what you want.

Look at other things you can do even if small, you may locate your helper from there.

I studied ee too but tried looking for anything to put food on the table since I was not getting the job I need as an ee graduate.

70% of those that studied a course do not practice it, so u can take that to the bank.

Olatheo. I won't sugar coat words for you. So sad you're passing through hard times just like many Nigerian Young graduates like us... It is okay to feel depressed but not for too long. Just don't give up and try not to fail yourself regardless. I hope you see the light at the end of the tunnel and one your better days, you will remember days like thing and sigh

I'm a graduate of Elect/Elect Engineering, ever since I finished my NYSC last year, things are not really fine with me, I've once beg here on nairaland for financial help to eat but some people called me fake, I'm begging good people on nairaland to help me find a job. If you don't mind teaching, start your career from a small school. Within 2 years, get an IGCSE certification in Maths/Physics.

Most big schools in Abuja do IGCSE. With time, apply to big schools.

Then you do one or two lessons every month.

You can comfortably get married and raise a family in a 2 bedroom flat in satellite areas in Abuja and also get a good car afterwards in a year or two.

Perfect the design thing. Better u learn mechanical as well and if can, start processing ur coren certification. With this u can seal and earn good money. I earn between 30k-70k for design jobs and if u are good u ll even make more.
Finally, try and learn practical installation. It makes u know what u are doing.
With a good m&e design knowledge, ur coren and sound practical u can bid for mini jobs/contracts.

The problem is you and only you can solve your problem.

Look up those who are experts in installing electrical wires on buildings and offer to lend a helping hand, free of charge, so you can gain the knowledge and experience.

There's so much money to be earned if you are skilled in it.

Don't wait till .... but start now.

Op we are in the same shoes.

I also studied the same course and finished service july last year. The only thing is that I finished with a 2.2 and I graduated at a young age.

I served in * and the lockdown and covid made me jobless before my service year ended sef

I wasn't able to learn all the practical skills that I needed.

I've only gotten 2 interviews since then and those were tech related. I've been keeping myself busy with learning tech skills like data science, android dev and blockchain. Finding tech job sef no easy. This country too hard!

You know the problem with some of you? When you have a few things going your way in life, you only see things from your myopic view. From this very first line, one can tell.

Of course, you studied Chem. Engr. and that qualifies you to tell with full confidence what goes on in the department of Electrical. While it might appear to you that elect engineering guys get involved in the practice of engineering, for the most part, what you see is a mere charade and nothing really to rely on. TPS trainers, banana wires, few projects, and a truckload of theories which is far more prioritized than any practical.

One would expect you to know that the practice of engineering comes with industrial experience, except, of course, you want to be an electrician or a mechanic. This is evident in that to be registered by COREN, you must have acquired field experience in real organizations.
