So earlier last year, my dad decided to go into yam business. The most common in my area kuje Abuja to be precise.

Since we're just starting, we bought seedlings worth of 40k.
We later found out that seedlings are more expensive and scarce during farming/planting period.
We got the land for free
We paid farmers #20 per ridges and we dug about 500ridges.
Meaning. #20*500= 10,000

Total money spent on investment was approximately#60,000 plus running cost.

The farmers were paid 6k to harvest the whole yam.
Those guys started as early as 6am and we're done by 2pm just 3 of them.

Truck that packed it was paid 1k.

Pic 1 and 2, the big size yams we want to sell. Those buyers are pricing 45k

Pic 3 are the ones for home and family consumption. Any remainder would be added to seedlings.

Pics 4, the small yams we want to preserve as seedlings.

Think we got a lot from our investment in the end.
Great effort. Do value what's for consumption and the seedlings to know your profitability and Return on Investment.
This will further guide anybody willing to invest in it.

The yam for consumption should be preserved properly because if yam is being kept on the ground like on the picture for so long, it will be getting spoilt gradually.

I advice you construct a yam barn in your house to preserve those yams.

Yam business, especially when you plant is very productive.

Agriculture is the best.

To drive goats and cattle from your farm, make sure you plant egusi with it. Egusi is poisonous to those animals. What other plant is like egusi that cattle and goats dislike?

Good job well done. If you invested 60k and buyers are only willing to pay 45k. How do you consider that a good investment. Especially looking at all the work you have put into it.
Cos he bought seedlings for 40k at the start.. Now after harvesting he has enough yams to sellfor 45k...and seedlings worth more than 50k for another planting...now no need to buy seedlings again... Do the maths

Effort highly Commendable, but we all can't be doing this else other sector suffer. In advance countries only few of the populace are farmers because with modern implement just ten individuals can feed the whole nation, while also providing quality employment along the time. Unfortunately what we are practising down here is subsistence farming that can hardly guarantee food sufficiency and security year round, without experiencing abnormal hike in prices of this commodities at some point. To get the best out of farming government will need to be directly involved by acquiring several acres of fertile land in all the six geo political zone, which will be allocated to individuals who truly want to go into farming not just to one money bag or portfolio farmer somewhere who will buy up the land and conver it to another use. Soft loan will then be provided which will be repayabe as soon as harvest season starts. With proper implementation and monitoring, before long employment will become a thing of the past, as we'll be generating huge foreign exchange through export of numerous farm produce after satisfying our home need. This will make a healthy and productive nation, which will give a more lasting hope than the paltry social intervention fund that can be spent in one day. This will be synonymous with teaching someone how to fish rather than giving him fish.

over 130 big yams and 120 average. they are sold already..
we sold it much ealier, we were told if we could wait till February we would sell then for about 60k.
Congratulations! Well done. My advise to you, since you guys are just starting.. Use more of the biggest yams as seedlings for next seasons.. Sell off the smaller ones. It is called selective breeding. Continue replanting the best yams you have and few years down the line, not only will you be making bumper harvests of big tubers, other farmer's will start coming to you for seedlings.
My 50 cents.

How do I go about it pls

You don’t plant the smaller yams as seedlings.
You plant the biggest of it all, so you can get same size next year..

My father was a farmer so I grew in the farm.
Kudos
