Though 70 per cent of cancer patients need radiotherapy treatment, only three centres are functional in the country... Nigerians suffering from cancer have lamented the high cost of treatment and dearth of treatment facilities and specialists.https://dailytrust.com/world-cancer-day-only-3-public-radiotherapy-centres-in-nigeria

We all thought that the advent of the COVID-19 virus will be a wake up call to the FG to improve healthcare service and funding in Nigeria, but alas they still don't care about the masses when it comes to healthcare. So long the criminals in power and their families can afford to travel to developed countries with tax payers money to treat ear infections and headaches, then the masses can die for all they care. I still thank God that the EBOLA outbreak did not happen in this administration, if not, people that will survive after it will not be up to 1million.

Those ones working now are possibly going to be out of function in 6 months' time. Believe me, those functioning 3 are already creaking under the strain of the overload, so are the teams of health care professionals. The stress of getting radiotherapy in Nigeria is unimaginable. You would have your surgery at FMC, Owerri and would be referred to UCH, Ibadan for radiotherapy. When you get to UCH, you would be shocked to learn that your number in the seemingly endless list is 733, and that number 25 would be the next in line to be attended to. Before your 2nd or 3rd session, you would learn that the machine had broken down and you would be referred to Benin, having learnt that UBTH, Benin, just fixed their machine. And the cycle continues. A couple of years back, it was reported that some doctors due for their final fellowship examination in Nigeria were refused confirmation because they had not witnessed an important radiotherapy in their area of specialization, not because they delight in playing truancy, but just because there was no functioning radiotherapy center across the country at the time. If the government of the day does not declare a state of emergency in the health sector, we all are in for a "big and dirty" rude awakening. |
