Dis.guy is a mod in this section? Now it adds up. I for say that an average Nigerian guy cannot just be that refined na. He is definitely well-traveled if not based abroad. Kai!

OP, STEM is the past, present and future. These countries thrive on innovation, unlike your Nigeria.

demand for employers in those fields are low and they have enough people in those countries to do the work. The western world will keep needing doctors, nurses, IT, auditors , project management people, engineers etc. Such is life

Accounting is also highly sought-after.

wait, law, philosophy and English teaching don't have value over there?
PLEASE what will a LAW GRADUATE be expecting from a country with an entirely different Legal system?
That Law graduate should better be prepared to do other jobs or better go back and study.

NIGERIAN PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE abroad is a mirage. Such a graduate should prepare his or her mind to enroll in something more lucrative there.

One of the most lucrative art courses abroad remains Foreign Languages and International relations. Those who can interpret many languages are indispensable.

Science requires extra IQ to break ground ....

Oyinbo children finds Art easier but many of them abhors science.... Now Oyinbo Leaders wants Science oriented migrants to power their economy....

They don't want you to compete with their children but to fulfil their economy road map !!

If you don't have what it takes to fulfil their country and economy , just stay in your country ....

Oyinbo ain't doing Bonanza but Agenda ... They have plans ... they know how many they need, who they need and what they need !!

Really?... you have an art degree... US Visa.... arrive in the US.... then what? The guys that be on here with excellent pencil drawings can arrive in the US today and be making money tomorrow.... and doubling each day. Some degrees are practically useless abroad. Art is one if them.

We are in the 4th Industrial Revolution the skills that are in demand are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related support new technologies such as Bitcoin, Blockchain, AI/ML, IOT, Robotics, Space technologies, Biotechnology, and Solar Battery. We still need business managers and creative people, but a background in STEM is critical.

Some of the best programmers in AI/ML have a background in Art and creative subjects, so I will get on my bike and start learning how to code.

I haven’t logged on to post for awhile but for the silly generalizations on this topic.

Art courses are relevant and useful in the West just like science courses. It depends on where you are, what you want, what you know and who is guiding you.

I have lived in the UK for 11 years, and Canada for some years. While I studied in the former to PhD level, I did art(law). It has served me well.

I know many who read art courses who are doing well in the financial, legal, healthcare, business and hospitality industries in Canada.

In short, they read these courses from places like Abia, Osun, Ebonyi, Delta, Ogun and Ekiti states.

I know science graduates too.

Through the Canadian NCA process, I have met and continue to interact with many Naija lawyers trying to practice here. Some work in courts, law firms and big professional services firms like PWC, Deloitte, Denton...while writing their licensing exams.

The licensing exams that Naija lawyers write are also written by American, British and Australian lawyers who want to practice law in Canada. It’s not peculiar to Naija lawyers.

Naija and other African doctors even face greater and tougher pathways to getting licensed here.

Engineers, nurses and teachers from across the world face licensing requirements and demands here too. Reason?

...Traditional professions are elitist and regulated to ensure credibility, control and compliance, and standardization.

In Canada, the UK, the US and co, all immigrants go through processes and seasons to settle in. Reason? We were not born here, didn’t study here and couldn’t have built the organic network for easy ascension.

It takes time to study, graduate and work in Naija where we were born and raised. It’s not abnormal and it is expected to take same, if not longer time, away from home in societies that are many decades, if not centuries, ahead of ours.

Over 30,000 Nigerians moved to Canada since 2015...The opportunities and areas of accomplishments and struggles are diverse across science and the arts.

Guys, do your research before you generalize.Stop listening to single and half stories of people who are determined to stay in their comfort zones on the sidelines of these societies.

I can speak confidently about the UK and Canada. Ask questions, if you have.

Even those that obtain humanities or arts degrees abroad find it difficult to get jobs, let alone those that obtain them from a Nigerian university. The fact is that STEM studies are all the rage now and the focus is on them. If your interest is in getting a job abroad, research pertinent fields and work towards obtaining certification in them...fields like computer science, data science, mathematics/statistics, the pure and applied sciences, medicine and surgery, etc. Financial certification that is acceptable internationally also has some viability, subject to some amendments or conversion to suit local regulation. But you graduated with a degree in gender studies, liberal arts, theatre arts, the social sciences etc? Good luck getting a decent job anywhere on the globe.

Art courses are largely country dependent. Nigeria's Law degree is useless outside the country but not for medicine or engineering. Also, in jobs' availability, even their citizens face low prospects and salaries. Check the lamentations by PhD grads in history, philosophy, political science etc. Now, compare to science based courses and you will see the difference. Someone with a PhD in Computer Science from Princeton will quickly get a job anywhere in the world over his counterpart with a PhD in history from the same institution.

It's what it's.

Nwanne this your siggy funny ooo! But wait oo, why run down my history like that...

most human needs(not wants) are science or technologically inclined. Talk about healthcare, transport, communication systems, manufacture of goods, agriculture, construction and other fundamental aspect of the society, science drives them and serious nations don't play with the supply of scientist to drive the growth and maintenance of those things.
It is only here in Africa we see the largest departments in schools being law, accounting, mass comm, or intl relations.
Islamic studies also.
